I just noticed this too. If Sportrac is right then info from Sal that we get any cap space back next year was incorrect. But I guess Sal might be right and Sportrac just simplified things.

Also, do we know if this is final or he needs to stay on the Texans roster (and we get some prorated number if he is cut)?

I don't know about what happens if he is cut.  I try to keep an eye on things like this, so I know in the future.

So did I but the more I thought about it (after I saw today that his dead cap changed for 2022) is his signing bonus for 2023 is

a fixed cost.  Maybe Sal was wrong.

Beane said exactly that. We need OJ to remain a Texan all year to get the full credit so it can’t be applied til the offseason. If we end up getting over 2M of that dead money freed up then Beane is proven to be a true wizard once again. He clearly knows these rules and that it would be likely if Oj didn’t make our team he would be picked up by another.

This is baffling to me. Why was he cut?

even if he didn’t play often, a 6’6 250 target for the redzone is of more value than what Morris and Sweeney currently offer

even more puzzling that Beane mentioned he wouldn’t hesistate to bring Howard back if he was available?

could we see a strange trade at deadline of Sweeney or a 7th for Howard?

I agree that he’s better than Sweeney.  But Sweeney is part of the boys club

So wait are we complaining the other direction now?

if our TE2 doesn’t see the field much what brings the most value? Howard is as good of a blocker as Morris and Sweeney…and clearly offers more value in the Redzone

Yeah he shouldn’t have been cut. Don’t really see why he was. But the coaches and GM did so my guess is he wasn’t a hard worker, or was an idiot and couldn’t learn the offense, or had a me first attitude. Something along those lines.

this would make sense

It's none of the reasons you two seem to think it is... Howard's best trait coming out of Alabama in 2017 was his freak athleticism. In 2020 he tore his Achilles and hasn't been the same since. Reports from camp and the pre-season all said the same thing: the dude looked slow and laboring in his route running and his blocking wasn't any better than Morris or Sweeney. Bucs fans warned us that the dude just wasn't the same after that injury. He missed most of 2020 and when he came back in 2021 he was the third TE behind Gronk and Cameron Brate, who isn't exactly an All-Pro. The Bills took a chance to see if he was anywhere near where he was before the injury and it seems he wasn't so he didn't make the team. It happens.

I think there is some cap relief from cutting Howard IF he stays on a team all season. I’ll try to find a link. If true this game is great for us.

The Bills can get $2 million in additional cap space according to Spotrac but I’ve read elsewhere that he has to meet certain incentives.  Would apply to cap next season

Shrug.

We cut players who can play well on other teams.  Good.   I want to do that every year.

Let the coaches pick and choose amongst NFL caliber players.   Not between "hell no" and "well he's a body" type player.

Yeah def not this years cap. But every bit every year helps going forward. I think the incentive is play the whole season on a roster.

OJ Howard had twice as many TDs in one game than Sweeney has his entire career. I know that its only 1 game. Keeping Sweeney over someone with the potential of Howard is the stupidiest thing we have done in awhile. OJ is a way better TE than Sweeney... OJ is atleast competent. Sweeney is just a non factor when he is on the field

Good grief.

I guess some people have to complain about something.

Howard certainly didn't earn a roster spot with the Bills. By all accounts and in pre season he pretty much sucked. However, you can legitimately say the same thing about Sweeney. He sucks too but he's a great locker room guy. Obviously, the Bills brass felt that was am important factor worth keeping him. Morris does look to have lots of potential.

I guess he should have tried harder when he was here so he wouldn't get cut. He looked bad.

He might be one of those players that turns it on for the actual games, but that is not going to fly here.

Jerry Hughes was more impressive than Howard today

Bills should’ve kept them both!! Jerry and Von would’ve been wrecking machines. Howard could’ve been that red zone threat the Bills don’t have not named Josh Allen. Still perplexed keeping Sweeney over Howard unless it was financially motivated

It is very hard to question anything this regime has done. But as a huge fan of Howard since college, I hated his cut. Personally, I would lean on the 1st round talent and hope the light comes on (and injury gets better) than keep dime a dozen JAGs like Sweeney and Morris. But hopefully that make some plays for us.

but I really wish Howard well. His career has been a disappointment and by all accounts, he’s a good dude. Good for him.
