Edmunds to Bears

This kid has had way too many people in his ear. Lorax claiming he’ll be a HOFer before 1 game played. Did it go to his head? I don’t think so. But he sure helped us lose a humiliating game to NE last year. No reason for his horrific play misdiagnoses. He’s the Ron Burgundy of MLB’s in that all you have to do is look him off and you’ve got a completion. Cannot stress enough that I’m glad he’s gone and we can finally stop talking about him.

I only said I haven’t missed a game since 1991 but I’ve watched them for 40+ years. And living thousands of miles away, before Sunday Ticket, made watching every freakin game very difficult, but I did it. So, tell ME…which player, non-QB, has created more animosity and conversation than Tremaine? It’s been like this since DAY ONE.

You’re not getting those guys on the cheap. Maybe not Edmunds #,. but you think those guys could be deployed in 2LB defenses and play every down. Edmunds allowed our young secondary to play nickel all game. These guys are long in the tooth and Edmunds is 24.

Yet Wagner outperformed Tremaine next year

If we're going to overpay a bit, I'd prefer it be for offense.  What does a defense have to do anymore?  Get a couple turnovers and prevent 2-3 drives from scoring.  If you can do that without paying your two starting LB's over $25 million combined, then don't.  Congrats to Tremain though for being a gentleman here and representing both himself and the Bills with class.

I was and still am a fan of Edumonds but there is no way this team could have ponied up 18 million aav with a big guarantee for him. He is a good player and in free agency good young players get paid like elite players. The Bears had the luxury of overpaying for a good player, they don't have a lot of big contracts and their QB is on a rookie deal.

This team will have to find a way to replace the production of Edumonds who was very good in coverage and esp this past season solid against the run. But I would rather invest the cap dollars on offense and try to replace Edumonds cheaply in the draft or with a lower mid-level free agent.

i dont disagree, just sucks to have the best NCB in the game, have given him a nice contract, and now hes a very situational player?

Nobody shoot me here, but if theoretically we go back to a 4-3, what would taron's trade value be?  not advocating it, just thinking of questions beanes sorting through

Nobody runs a 43 or a 34 the majority of the time anymore

There’s too much speed and wide receivers on the field

The NFL is all about sub packages …. Nickel and Hybrid dime defenses

Even if we use more 43 looks it would never be close to 70% like base defenses 25 years ago

you can run more 43 and keep Taron on the team lol

The funniest thing was if we had the cap room, this board would be over the moon if we signed a 24 year old with his tools and production.

Production? In 5 seasons he produced 6.5 sacks, 5 picks, 2 Forced Fumbles, and 37 stuffs for 71 yards lost.

So in a typical season that's 1.5 sacks, 1 interception, likely 0 forced fumbles, and a run stuff every other game for a 2 yard loss.

Not an impact player for $18M/season.

Sry if this was already discussed, but does this all but guarantee at least 4th round comp pick to us? Assuming that we will not sign any other FA with bigger deal then we just give to Connor McGovern?

I have no idea how the formula works, but this looks like a huge deal which could fetch a 3rd.

Do you think the Bears are going to play a conventional 4/3 with Edmunds outside?

I don’t. Eberflus’s defense is 4-3, but they are 4-2-5 80% of the time. Something like that. It’s similar to our defense. I’m guessing they play Tremaine at Mike and Edwards at Will with Sanborn at Sam. But the majority of the time it’s going to be Edwards and Tremaine on the field imo.

I don't follow the Bears a lot, but it was my impression they were playing majority Nickel.

Smart teams typically don't pay top dollar for a FA with the intention of using them in an entirely different way than the way they succeeded enough to become top dollar FA.

Totally. The point of having Tremaine is that Tampa 2, take away the middle of the field. If he’s playing outside it kind of takes away that impact imo. So I don’t think his role will Be much different, though they will play some base.

I agree.

I have a feeling that there is a big offensive move out there. Maybe it is Hopkins or Henry or Jeudy

I'm not a Juedy fan. Henry would really be interesting but it's a pass for me. I'd be very interested in Dhop. The guy is one of the top WRs in the game. Him and Diggs with Allen would rival the Dolphins trio.

Will be interesting to see how he's replaced.  Two things he provided that not many others had were size and speed and those are two things that can't be taught.  But he never quite lived up to expectations either.  Is interesting that many in the media appreciated him and talked him up much more than people here do.  Either they are much smarter than the arm chair GM's here or were all blowing smoke and will quickly find out the Bears way over paid.

Should be somewhat easier to replace him than when he arrived as overall more experience around the MLB position, but can they overcome the size as do think he shut down passing lanes more than realized.

It always makes me nervous too whenever a player in the last year of his contract has a career year.  He certainly isn't the first to do that, recall Shaq Lawson "saving the best for last", couple years later he's back, but walking with a limp from having such a fat wallet.

Edmunds was never as good as his biggest fans claimed nor as bad as his biggest detractors claimed.

A plus defender against the pass, and an average to below average defender against the run. A very unique player. Not many like him in the NFL. He's somewhat of a linebacker/safety hybrid, to be honest.

At any rate....the Bills defense will look quite different next season. The best part is that we won't have to hear the endless Edmunds debate any more.

This is the most rational Tremaine Edmunds post I've ever seen, by far.

Remember when people ran Hughes out of town last year because he couldn't get sacks after a 2 sack season?  Well he put up 9 sacks this year in Houston after supposedly being washed.  Hughes averaged 4 sacks in 5 seasons with Frazier, and 8 sacks in 5 seasons without Frazier, including this past year with 3 seasons of 9 or more.

I have a feeling Edmunds is going to be even better now that he is not stuck with Frazier anymore.  Just like how London Fletcher was never the issue despite this whole board making him the "Edmunds" like whipping boy while he was here.

I was fine for cap reasons not resigning him, but don't be surprised when Edmunds really excels in Chicago.

He’s a coverage backer without ball skills.

He’ll be fine, but no one is going to forget Urlacher

That is how he was used here.  I have said for a while, the thing most people hate the most about Edmunds has more to do with how he is used in our system.  No one compared him Urlacher, one of the best LBs of the past 30 years.  But, I think Edmunds is going to show he is more than what he was here now that he is in Chicago.
