Coach Tuesday
Haven’t seen any media coverage about it so I thought I’d start a thread. Good possibility tomorrow is Jerry Hughes’ last regular season game as a member of the Bills. Since arriving in Buffalo in 2013 in a trade for crummy linebacker Kelvin Shephard, Hughes has been a mainstay of the Bills’ defense. He has 52.5 sacks in 143 games, tied with Cornelius Bennett for 4th in team history. Half a sack tomorrow will put him solely in possession of 4th place on the franchise list - seems doable with a rookie QB and shaky o-line. Though Jerry’s play has fallen off somewhat this year, he deserves to be recognized as one of the better defensive players of his era and certainly of the last 25 years of Bills football. He rarely missed a snap and brought energy on nearly every play, even though he still can be counted for around one boneheaded play (late hit, early jump) per game. He notoriously doesn’t draw flags and fought referees as often as he fought offensive tackles. He was a standout player during the back half of the Drought - one of the few guys who continued to fight when many of his teammates had given up on the season. And he was here to experience the Revival along with Kyle Williams (who sits at 5th on the franchise sack list). Jerry, if tomorrow is your last regular season home game, thanks for the memories - you were a pleasure to watch and your energy will be missed. 21 1 7 1
thenorthremembers
He had a strip sack of Tannehill 4 or so years ago that was one of the best defensive efforts Ive ever seen. Good on ya Jerry.
Patience
This is what comes to mind when I think of Hughes's best play as a Bill. Beats, and then gets held by, the best LT in the game at the time (and one of the best ever). Proceeds to track down the ball carrier, strip it, and run it in for a TD. Just incredible. 8

McD wants a vet in every room and the DE room will be without one come FA. 5

WotAGuy
He’s gotta have the record for most pressures without a sack. I can’t figure how he doesn’t have more sacks. If we had Jerry in his prime right now…. Its going to be difficult to get more sacks next year - Mario and Jerry are not going to do it and I don’t see the Bills spending in FA for someone decent. I think they will run with AJ, Rousseau, and Boogie and see if they can break out.
Miyagi-Do Karate
Pretty amazing to see him mature. When he first got here, he would commit like at least 2-3 super dumb penalties per game. Was a bit of a hot head. Seems like he really matured and became a true process guy. BTW, i saw Kelvin Sheppard the other day on TV— he is an assistant coach for the Lions.
shane nelson
Despite too many dumb penalties, an impact player who gave us his all. If father has caught up so be it. He will be missed. The Hughes for Shephard trade is one of the greatest in Bills history. Let's hope he beats Bennetts's record by 4. Oh and thank you Indy for the greatest trade in Bills history. 2
BuffaloBillyG
Jerry had a great career here. Sadly, I do believe it's time to part ways. Glad the was here to experience a bit of team success. Wish Kyle Williams would have been around and extra couple years to be a part of it.
stuvian
This trade was probably Buddy Knox' best transaction as Bills GM. Hughes has been incredibly productive and consistent. We are fortunate to have had him throughout his prime.

I certainly hope Jerry has a chance to retire as a Bill. Maybe he comes back in a more limited role on a lower contract. Hard to say because he would have to agree that the time for this has come. He has had his bumps in the road but no doubt he has been a great Bill. Talk about a winning trade for Buffalo. I wish Jerry nothing but the best in his upcoming days and decisions.

Ross Murdock
For a few years Hughes was one of the few star players on the Bills, whom opposing players also respected. He was the star of our defense. His worse trait was false starts during the worst possible times. A true Bill though. I still think the Bills might keep him as a solid backup, for about $3M. If he's done, I'll remember him fondly. 1
Freddie's Dead
Jerry Hughes is the only player ever who was penalized for celebrating a good play by a teammate, by slapping the teammate in the helmet. PF for unnecessary roughness. I hope Jerry sticks around for one more year. The refs have started calling the holding when Jerry is held, so the embargo may finally be lifted. Can see this happening. The Bills drafted 3 DE early the past two seasons, so they are coming back. Think they'd like to resign Obada, could see a 5th DE signed in Hughes at a much lower contract number. McD likes the idea of a vet presence, considering the rest of their D-line are all pretty young. could see him coming back for one more season in this role before turning the keys over to likely Oliver.
LeGOATski
Despite his relative struggles in the regular season, Hughes shows up in the playoffs. In 5 playoff games for the Bills, Jerry has 6 sacks, including his impressive performance against Houston where he had 3 sacks, 4 combined tackles and 4 QB hits. He had 2 sacks in the Baltimore game where the defense put on one of their most memorable performances to date.

Let's Go Buffalo
Jerry Hughes has been one of my favorite DE's to watch, since his days at TCU under Gary Patterson's tutelage, clear up until now with the Buffalo Bills. He's had a good run, and I really do think he still has some left in the tank!
billsfan89
I have no clue how good Hughes is doing this season. So I have no idea if they will bring him back. To my eye test Hughes hasn't had too much of an impact PFF grades him out well and he had a few decent grades from All 22 earlier in the season. But from watching the games especially the back half of the season it looks like Hughes hasn't made much of an impact. The Bills have an interesting choice to make. Both Addision and Hughes are free agents and there isn't a proven option behind them. Behind Addision and Hughes you have Groot who flashed as a rookie and is a high round pick then you have Boogie and AJ two recent second round picks who haven't done too much. I think the front office brings back one of either Hughes or Addision just to have a proven vet DE but which one is the more productive of the two? I do tend to wonder if the same “Crazy” which let Hughes physically dominate, led him to be hot-headed and if in dialing back to “leader” and “contained” he also dialed back the over-the-top physical effort that made him a sack-master. Or it could just be “Father Time”

Rocky Landing
He's always played with so much passion, that I always forgave him his occasional unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. A fierce competitor, always. He was also a member of what I consider to be a legendary front four: the '14 D-line of Williams, Williams, Darius, and Hughes, which recorded 40 sacks with the fewest number of blitzes by any team that season. (Hughes had 10). (Which reminds me: in the not-unlikely event we lose Leslie Frazier during the offseason, I would love to see a return of Jim Schwarz as DC. He fits, imo.) 1
BigAl2526
It's possible he's gone after the season. It's been a case of diminishing returns. The Bills have to decide how much he's worth, and Hughes has to decide what he'll accept in a contract. It might be tough for Hughes and the Bills to find common ground. I'd be happy to have him in a reduced role at a decent price though. I think he's a good locker room guy and team mate.

It’s possible to state how good he was and also admit he’s done and won’t be back next year. I’d like him to occasionally sack the QB for a guy making the type of money he has. Addison , who has been a whipping boy here, has outsacked Hughes this year and last despite being older . It’s okay tho you can throw out the vaunted pressure rate to me about why he’s still good
