Are you concerned about Elam?

Not concerned about Elam. He was a reach in the first round. Big upside but poor technique and needs NFL development. He was never supposed to be an immediate impact starter - that was practically a consensus scouting report. He's still on track (albeit Bills got lucky with Benford).

Did I miss something ? Never heard Elam name at all yet he played plenty of snaps, I thought both rookies held up very very well.

LA gained 193 yards across 49 called passing plays (i included the 2 yard scramble but it barely moves the needle either way).  That's like 4 yards per passing play with 3 turnovers.  The panthers had the worst net yards per attempt in the league at 5.0 last season (the rams were 2nd in the nfl in this category at 7.3 net yards per attempt).  The defense held the 5th best passing offense in 2021 to atrocious stats, I think we're being a bit nitpicky here.

Yeah, thanks for adding some details to my caveman thoughts, my concern about life without White for a few games was eliminated last night

Agreed, the knock on benford coming out was speed and level of competition.  Speed isn't everything and projecting someone's ability against better competition is always a challenge.

But he has the size teams covet, he's smart, good tackler, has ball skills - always funny to me when you list all that and then at the end the scouting report says something like "round 7 - priority UDFA".

Helps the secondary when the d line obliterates the opposition.  The biggest miscue that i saw in the game was the long play to Kupp, and from what i could tell that appeared to be on Benford.  I think it was a cover 2 beater flag route type of thing, so the safety can't get over there but Benford was basically in no mans land.  Still - good game all around.

Not to mention CB is the hardest position to translate college to the pros, outside of QB historically right?

Folks have to remember the Bills don't draft in the top 10 anymore.  Guys like Tre coming out of the box great are RARE.

If you are drafting blue chip positions like DE and CB in the last 3-4 picks of the first round, they are not normally gonna come out at be stars.  If they were, they would be top 10 picks.

Some teams just have a knack for identifying and recruiting talent at certain positions. Steelers know WRs. Whether it’s Coach, Leslie and or scouting, Bills know DBs. I expect Elam to develop into a top shelf starting caliber CB. From what I’ve seen he looks at times totally outstanding in man coverage. We will see how he adapts to zone when required to do so. I suspect Tre will be a big help to him. Bedford has been impressive in his consistency. He can play at this level. He’s got a good head and is physical. A football player. On Kupp’s best YAC play last night Bedford not only beat the block but seemed to be using it as a screen. He disengaged cleanly when he had to and was in great position to make the play. Don’t ask me to explain how Kupp managed to run through the tackle. I guess thats just what he does.

Why are you pretending that there is an issue? Elam is doing very well by all accounts.

By the way, your screen name has a certain irony…,

Go  Bills!!!

Context Einstein, context.  Elam played late in the game when the game was over and the D as a whole was letting Stafford play

pitch and catch for short yardage gains.  Let's just give it some time to see how things play out.

Im not sue that helps your argument as much as you think it does.

I feel Bills were mixing and playing matchups.
Its a new season and everyone is finding their role and place
My hero Taron Johnson had a rough game but i am hardly ready to think his next game might not be his best yet !
Go Bills Laundry !

With how good Benford looks, and with Elam’s contributions coming partially on special teams tonight, it leads the mind to wonder what other 1st round pick we could have acquired rather than a DB that is a depth player in a backfield that is missing it’s starter.

More concerned about your post quality.

I think better question is how they will handle gameday roster, and if Cam Lewis sticks around, once Tre returns.

Rams have better WR’s (Kupp is top 3 and Robinson is top 10). O-line (one of the best in the NFL though losing Whitworth stings), D-Line (Aaron Donald, do I have to say more?), CB’s (Ramsey and Hill) and LB’s (Leonard Floyd, Bobby Wagner).

They really do have a pro bowl roster.

You called Allen Robinson a top 10 WR this offseason. I think that alone completely discounts any football opinion you have.

Agree Jackson and White.

But i don't see the Bills playing Tre till he gets at least 4 weeks practice in...so i think they will take him off PUP end of WK 4, activate him bye week, plays the Sunday nighter VS the Pack...

Absolutely insane timeline hopefully

Agree. Benford had an easier transition based on what he played in college. Wasn't like Elam played poorly in his snaps. What a find Benford looks. They did it with Levi and have done again with Dane. But they both had to be brought along slowly. Benford is more physically gifted than both and hits the ground running. Very exciting. White, Jackson, Benford, Elam we might end up being four legit players deep at outside corner.

which is very rare and incredibly valuable.

Remind me in 17 weeks.

I'm reminding you now. Robinson will average more than 1 reception and 12 yards per game but he is not going to be a top 10 WR. It was a laughable take. Also every other position group that you claimed the Rams were better than us, our group performed better last night.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had a nice game imo on MNF. Will likely start Sunday assuming Dane is out. Interesting that he was essentially drafted to match up with this type of WR with his speed and size, and ability to play man (even if the Bills play zone this week, all zone eventually turns to man with a hill/waddle WR. We did not have anyone like him previously. Should be a great early test.

Elam has looked pretty good when the ball comes his direction. So has Benford for that regard.
