I stand corrected.

It’s a shame he needs the money so much that he can’t muster up the integrity to turn it down. He retired for a reason. He’s lost it. But if Jones is too stupid,  who am I to disagree.

You’re right. Pro athletes are the least egotistical professionals outside of bee keepers and librarians.

 I doubt it was a money grab. He was making 4-5m I bet for the MNF gig. There are very few pro athletes anywhere that give it up until they are forced to, and personally I don't blame them for playing as long as they can. If the team doesn't think they are worth it, they cut them.

Will Jerry have the stones to cut him?

It is ironic that he will be one of those few pro athletes who did gave it up voluntarily and on his own terms only to be forced to a year or so later.

Was he really that bad on MNF?  I think that got exaggerated a bit.  The MNF broadcast, in general, has declined, but to me, Witten was just another mediocre ex-jock, maybe trying a little too hard at times...but he was hardly the worst.

Yes, he was really that bad. He may be on par with some of the D teams on Sunday afternoon, but he should never be allowed in the booth for a prime time game.

What's selfish about it?

Just wondering if he is coming back because he thinks he still has it. Maybe his mind is in the right place, but his body may not be. Therefore, I just wonder if he'd be taking reps from a young player who needs to develop and convincing the staff that he is still a productive player, although nobody will really know till after TC. I mean, don't get me wrong, he was great. But I think to myself if Jimbo would have retired and came back after a year, would that have been taking reps from another QB? Especially knowing that it was just for one year. I think the team would have felt a sense of loyalty, but that would have halted the development of "the next man up".

Not saying that is the case, or there is/was better options for either team, but just wonder if he's holding on past his prime, at the overall detriment to his club

I don't understand why people are bagging on Witten's decision.  Yeah, he lost a step later in his career, but he still put up catch totals of 73/64/77/69/63 in his last five years.  It wasn't like there was a precipitous drop-off in production during his final season.  He's had a full year to rest his body and he's still 2 years younger than Antonio Gates who is still in the league.

This is a fair, well-thought-out post. I think he'll be fine as long as Dallas doesn't use him as the focal point of their offense, as they seemed to do for so many years. No way he can withstand that. The 2018 version of Antonio Gates looked like it belonged on a buffet line, not a football field. Still, I recall a couple of big plays by the big man.

That said, he -- and that type of production -- ain't worth no $5 mil, imho.

$5 mil can light a hell of a fire inside you!

Chances are that he is losing money to play. The rumors were he was offered 4-4.5m for the MNF gig, and Schefter reported the Cowboys deal is 3.5 (which I assume has 1.5 in incentives as I have also seen the 5m number. But Schefter is usually very accurate on this kind of stuff.

Jones reportedly had been begging him and is the one that made the $5m offer. Witten had turned it down before but just accepted. Jones had to want him back before he could choose to do so.

He signed a 4 year 30 million new deal 2 years ago and quit after 1 year of the deal.  Now he's crawling back to Jerry for 5 million--for a single season.

He doesn't seem too bright.

Anyone who had the misfortune of listening to him last year on MNF could confirm he is not very bright.

Honestly, his deficits were magnified because to was MNF.   But he's orders of magnitude better than JAGs like Solomon Wilocts.

If Gates can be a shell of him former self at age 38.  I don't see why Witten can't do the same at age 37 as Prescott missed Witten last year.  Still can block, knows how to get open, and has strong hands even if he isn't as athletic.  I really don't see the downside to this.

His production has dropped in half since 2012, at least yard wise. Will be interesting to see how a year off effects him, good or bad

Maybe Jason Garret will sign as the backup QB and they can finally get a real coach.

This is just bad IMO. I HATE when people unretire. Make a decision and stick with it.

I keep thinking Dirk Nowitski is going to do it and announce he’s playing another year after his retirement tour. I don’t think Wade will though.

Dirk never said he was retiring. Doc the dumbass is the one who started that stupid crap.

There really aren't a lot of good tight ends (although the draft seems to have some good ones).  The Cowboys really missed having Witten on the field.  Even old, he's probably better than their other options.  They'll probably draft another TE in case Witten doesn't work out.

And Witten really was terrible in the booth.

Four pages in, and nobody's said it, so I guess it's on me to do it: even as a shell of his former self, he would've been far and away the best TE on the Bills last year. Yes, if I were Beane I would've signed him for $5 million for one year in a second.

And from the Cowboys' perspective: what? You'd rather have taken a flyer on Charles Clay?  ?
