Deonte Harty Usage/Plan?

What the offensive coaching staff has done, and last year to an extent with Knox and Hines is confusing.  Why invest the assets financially and draft wise, if they don't/didn't have a plan for them in the system.  I watched Harty (Harris) with the Saints in 21 (with garbage QB play), and know he was an All-Pro KR specialist in 19.  The young man has a quick twitch this team could use.  I envisioned a Percy Harvin (Vikings 09-12) role to some extent, with that being a ceiling, and Tony with Chiefs being the floor.  He could really help with those quick throws in space, making an opposing DC think a little more about pressure and zone packages, because we know the run game isn't going to garner any respect.  Besides Diggs, who has the ability to be a game breaker?

You give Harty a respectable contract for a WR coming off an injury, why, if you're not going to use him?

You sign Knox to an upper tier TE contract, and then proceed to ignore him for huge parts of 22.

You take on Hines' contract, for what?  Yes he's hurt, but they were committed to pay him upper tier backup RB money.  What was the plan?

They could use what this guy brings to the table:

If Harty was once fast or fast twitch, it is not obvious that is still the case.  Currently a guy like Zay Flowers is fast and fast twitch.  Harty seems to be small like Flowers, but having only NFL average WR speed and elusiveness

I'll take the L, lol.  My bias from 2021 must be kicking in.  I remember that version of him catching the ball in the flat making stuff happen.  He averaged over 15 yards a catch that year.

They said F it after the Jets shut it down. A great Jets defense. They decided 1 quarter was enough.

1. Harty sucks.

2. They have absolutely no idea what they are doing and have wasted picks and cap space on guys they don’t want to, or don’t have any idea how to use.

You had it at 1.

The rest is irrelevant with regard to Sharty..........because of 1.

Our O coordinator is Pop Warner level.  He has no idea how to use what he has in front of him.

Harty is on pace to have his second best year. The issue is why in the world they thought he should get paid that contract or have more impact. He has been in the league 5 years and his best season is 36 catches. That was on a NO team that threw 500 passes...and had no legit receivers so Harty should have ridiculous numbers even being just an average guy.

Harty is playing the Nyheim Hines role on our team this year.  Bring him in, advertise his speed and playmaking ability, then never use him.  Still trying to figure out why Ty Johnson is back fielding kicks running at a snails pace while Harty looks on.

Yeah, I'm not seeing fast twitch today but I have seen tape of him in 19-20 and it's there.  I think our future offensive HC will have to determine who stays and who goes between guys like Hines, Harty, Sherfield.  There's way too much wasted cap going on with this team.

They sold a whole story about him being a deep threat and a complete receiver and they just have not bothered using him that way. They are just using as a gadget guy which is just dumb and amounts to a huge waste of money. Now maybe he is terrible, but they haven't even tried to use him the way he was used in New Orleans.

Sharty a healthy scratch. So glad we got rid of McKittrick....

Somehow Harty has actually outproduced McKittrick this year, albeit for a much bigger contract.

From what I’ve read Harty was damaged good.  Still had some juke to him but did not have the explosiveness he showed in New Orleans.  He also didn’t show the varied route running ability that he was believed to have shown in the past.

I’m unsure if this is bad scouting by the front office or if the injury that took him out last year has limited his ability.  Either way with his contract, this was a bad signing

I wonder if Flowers or Addison fell to 25 would we have traded up for Kincaid still, stand pat or trade up to 25 for one of those 2?

Both are having great starts to their career. Especially Addison. Dude crushed it as a #1 option for a rookie when Jefferson hit the injury list.

Yeah, the speed that was being talked about with Harty definitely isn’t there. You’re right on the money with “average”. At least to me.

He should be our Lil Dirty Plus.

Would love to get a Cole Beasley Plus (and that’s no knock on Kincaid who is just not in that mold).

Beasley was excellent at reading coverages and finding the right spot in the defense to get open.  Harty can’t do that

If McKittrick was still on the Bills, where he historically averaged two FD's a game, he'd have 24, while Sharty has 7, Sherfield 1 after 12 games.  According to Spotrac, McKittrick is 1.2M, 5.4M for the Sh** twins.  4.5x the price for 1/3 the production.

Would love if this offseason sees JA17 getting a new Beasley. That Welker type who he can throw to in 2 seconds for an easy 5-6 yards 9/10 times due to separation and like you said that feel for soft spots.

Wish Harty were better used for his YAC ability. He looked shifty on the 2 (?) screens we threw to him this year.

It's quite possible that Harty, and Sherfield for that matter, were both overrated by everyone.

Neither has done anything significant in the NFL to date in 11 combined seasons.  Neither appears to be on the cusp of doing so now, ... with Allen at QB.

Understandably, when a player is signed there's enthusiasm, but there has to be a logical and real basis for it, which there isn't for either of these two.

Both are getting paid more than Davis as well for the record.  Harty what, 2 years $10 or so.

Harty had one good season, ... for a 4th WR or so, nothing more.

In that season he had 3 TDs.  One was against a garbage team.  One was in extreme garbage time in a loss in the waning few minutes.  The third was in a blowout win in the mid-4th quarter putting the Saints up by 35.  No clutch TDs.

On that team, his only good season, the WRs that he was competing for for playing time almost no one here even knows or can name.  None that were on the team for any length of time that season have ever done anything beyond WR4, WR3 tops, production in the NFL.  Several, and not for age related reasons, are not even in the league anymore.

It's not difficult to log 570 yards and 3 TDs when you're one of two functional WRs on a team.  If that team had had a decent WR1 then Harty likely wouldn't have had that many yards.  To date in 2023, with a full third of the season remaining, 68 WRs have already posted 3 TDs, one of which doesn't even have 100 yards receiving, several more that don't have 200, a bunch we've never even heard of.

So again, it's quite possible that the enthusiasm for Harty and Sherfield outpaced the reality when we signed them.  Understandably, nonetheless.

Harty and Sherfield over DHOP may have costed everyone a job in the coaching tree and FO.
