T master
So i just replied to a post about the announcers changing for this seasons SNF crew with the legendary voice of Al Michaels leaving with the possibility of him retiring sooner than later it got me thinking for a lot of us growing up we have heard some of the legendary announcers of all time unique voices & perspectives of the games were part of the love we developed for this game . Cosell, Gifford, Dandy Don, Micheals, Sumerall, Madden, & all those in between that have brought us & helped us develop the love of this game over the years but i wonder which of these voices that we have listened to & have for the most part now left us have given you a favorite you loved to listen to with a new crop of announcers coming in which is your favorite ? My first recollection is Howard Cosell his voice was so unique and his presentation on MNF of how he put into words was 1 of a kind & you immediately knew who was talking when he was on the mike then of course 1 that changed announcing games for ever is Madden i loved everything about the way he changed the game to watch for the better . I don't know if there will ever be another like what Madden brought to the booth as far as how he explained the game while we watched and we will never forget his explanation of a guy being hit BOOM he was awesome . My top 3 voices of the NFL game i think are Madden 1 Cosell 2 Boomer 3 - although Boomer didn't do a regular slate of NFL games his Sunday NFL count down was legendary with his vocal inflections & sayings he brought to the game once it's gone will be missed along with the others . So who's your favorite NFL announcer or announcers for TV & some memories from over the years when you think back of their days in the booth ?

Ethan in Cleveland
Madden was my favorite and I think the best. Oddly though I couldn't stand Pat Summerall's play by play.

Special K
Dick Enberg with his "Oh...My" call was great....I am pretty sure he was the announcer for all 4 AFC Chamionship games the Bills won back in the 90's. On a side note, I always wished retired NHL announcer Mike Emrick covered NFL games. He was always great during the NHL playoffs, and I know he would have brought a lot of excitement to the booth for NFL games. 7
MiltonWaddams
Madden. Great insight, colorful personality, great voice. But the most important thing for me about John was that he just made it fun to watch and listen.

LabattBlue
Enberg and Michaels as PbP guys have been the gold standard over the last 5+ decades. Guys like Buck, Nantz, and Co are nowhere near them.

warrior9
For some reason, I have always thought that Kevin Harlan has the PERFECT voice for sports. Jim Nance is obviously a legend. And I do really like Romo for his play by play. He get's excited, talks like a normal person, but knows the game very well.
eball
I'll second Dick Enberg. Just an absolute pro, super nice guy, great voice, and his own catch phrase. Covers all the bases. 4

Charles Davis went to my HS and used to play golf with his father and mine, so he’sup there due to my relationship with him. Madden is my fav color guy by far ESPN Personality- we only have one choice imo. Edited April 20, 2022 by NewEra
GunnerBill
So Al Michaels and John Madden is the duo that to me was the gold standard when I really started getting into the NFL. I actually really liked Tirico and Gruden for their stint on MNF too.

Merle
I'll also vote for Dick Enberg. I enjoyed Curt Gowdy in his earlier years, but towards the end, he sounded like he was confused a lot of the time, calling players by the wrong names, forgetting the game situation (what down, etc), and sometimes even getting the teams mixed up ... and even the cities! But in his prime, he was great.

Joe Mama
Gee, you can really tell the age of this board on a weekday morning, there were some pioneers listed. Ray Scott "the screamer" Howie was the first to offer up negative criticisms. Folks tuned in just to hate on Howey. "Dandy" Don Meredith was the first to add humor and was the perfect foil for Howie. Al DeRogotis was the first I remember to add actual technical football analysis. Madden did humor combined with technical analysis.
First Round Bust
team - Madden and Summerall the gold standard followed by MNF crew of Cosell, Dandy Don and Mr Kathy Lee Gifford - entertainment beyond the game..Cosell.. I know every playahs numbah and where he went to collidge - and Dandy Don singong "turn out the lights the party's over" when the game got out of hand...followed by Enberg and Merlon Olsen (NBC 4 PM ET games - many Elway comebacks and west coast games which were followed by Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom but I digress). individual - Cosell - as a kid the half-time highlights on MNF were what I waited-up for...that man..right theyah...Mel Gray...taking a kick-off to the house, only seen on MNF Keith Jackson - the voice of college footballl...as in...good lookin sof-oh-more line-backah from Natcha-doses Tex-us...and the of course those big uglies up-front doing the blocking.

filthymcnasty08
Pat Summerall and John Madden CBS had them on the NFC East during its golden years in the 80's Special shout out to Dennis Miller. While not an all-time great, I am one of the few that enjoyed his humor during MNF. That was a unique twist. longtimebillsfan
Pat Summerall. I loved his minimalist style. He didn't need to talk and fill every second with his voice. He would let the game be the star. "Touchdown Dallas" That was all that was needed. Another announcer I really enjoyed was Keith Jackson. Ridgewaycynic2013
Nobody said 'Amp Lee' like Summerall did. * I wish Greg Bauch's parody sportscaster 'Greg Buck' was still posted online. Hearing the fictional Buck parry with fans over his play by play calling of a Bronco's game with Tebow at QB was priceless.
Utah John
Other than Van Miller, I'd go with Curt Gowdy and Merlin Olsen.
Draconator
Madden on a National level. On a local level, Van Miller and Greg Papa who used to do the Raiders broadcasts, but was unceremoniously dumped for the has been Brent Musburger. (He is currently god awful to listen to). I think the 49ers picked up Papa to do their radio broadcasts.
