Who's in the inner circle for Draft Day discussions?

So much information - and misinformation out there in the weeks leading up to the draft. How paranoid would Beane be about his real intentions in the early rounds - if he had his eye on a specific player, wanted to move up or down, etc., would he keep that to himself and McDermott? I would...

Well, when I talked to him last night, he made me pinky swear not to tell anyone.😉.

JK.

I worry more about conversations and stuff with Shoen and Dabol and wonder how that is going to play with ours and their draft boards. Wonder how many changes are being made.🤔

The Giants have 2 picks in the top 10, and then picks in the top 5 of rounds 2 and 3. If they’re changing their draft board relative to players that they’re worried the Bills will select at the bottom of the rounds then they’ll be looking for a new front office again soon.

I didn't mean to imply 1st round, apologize if it came across that way.

You seem to be of sound thoughts and this may be a little off topic, but I'll  ask anyways. If you are the Giants and you're starting fresh with a new GM, HC and need to make some cuts and then to build for the future as well as maybe not entirely sold on Jones. Would you trade back with one of your 1st rounders to try and pick one up for next draft? Would a team be willing to give a late 1st this year and next years 1st plus, to possibly move up to 5 or 7?

It is a good point. Who is 2nd chairing in the way that Schoen has previously? Who is Beane's trusted sounding board? I presume Brian Gaine but it is a question I'd like the media to ask when he does the pre-draft presser which I guess will come this week?

Beane strikes me as a guy who doesn't need anyone much other than McD to bounce things off of at this time. There's still a room full of Shoes types there as well, no doubt.

Yup.  And that's why so little news leaks out.

Schoen was the top evaluator though. I am told Brandon trusted his take almost over his own. I don't think he "needs" that as such but he has lost his top two guys in Schoen and Morgan since the last draft. So he either has to tweak his operation or someone will second chair.

Don't me wrong this is McDermott's show and always has been. Brandon is drafting to Sean's requirements, but he is very much a consensus leader type rather than a John Dorsey "I choose the pick and I trust nobody."

I think it would make sense for the Giants, however, the more difficult part of that is finding another team who believes it makes sense to trade up. I’m not a huge draft guy, but the impression I get is this draft is lacking in top end talent. If that’s the case the Giants may be forced to make the picks and then mortgage their own future picks next year to move up for a QB if Jones doesn’t pan out.

The one thing I think the Giants may be able to take advantage of this year is knowing where the Bills value certain players. If there’s someone they believe that’s likely to be sticking out on the Bills draft board and they have a pick coming up, they may be able to leverage that to make a trade, especially for their 2nd or 3rd round pick.

My wife must be a good authority, because this sounds familiar!

I’m guessing in the Beane regime Rex and that cab driver are not in the inner circle. That is one tight ship!

I’ve been to a Bills Super Bowl, and it was great. I think I’d prefer being in the Bills draft room than personally attend another SB. Check each box on the bucket list!

2nd round is the Bills’ kryptonite! 😭

I bet McDermott isn’t on the inner circle till a week or so out.

I bet the board is made by Beane and two other scouting people this year it was Schoen and prob Gaine before Schoen left

I believe McDermott is heavily involved, always. He is way too much of a detailed control freak to be on the outside.

Joe Shoen, and to a lesser extent, Dabol, know a lot of the Bills draft prospects.

Draft prospects are scouted starting in September through to the college bowl games.

A lot of discussion takes place around positions to focus on, as well as which games to attend in order to see specific prospects.

Shoen probably went to several college games himself.

Now, will that mean anything during the draft?  IDK

As far as Beane slipping information accidentally to the media or public, aaaah no.   He is very tight lipped.

HOWEVER, we do know that he has spent a lot of time scouting tight ends and safety.  So we kinda sorta know he is hoping to draft those two positions in this draft.

Only those that need to know, know.

The smoke won’t lift completely from the wizards vale until the draft is over, and even then…,

Go Bills!!!

Hopefully not Buffalo.  1st rounders are essential for cap control.

Edmunds is good, Epenesa and Basham might easily be good, it's too early to know.

Yup, Ford and Jones were bad picks.

No reason to think this record is bad. In a few years we'll know more, but right now we don't.

Yeah, I'd assumed Gaine, but you're right, it's not a sure thing.

Plus most/many of us believe the 2017 draft was primarily directed by McDermott himself. Don't we? It HAD to be him pulling those strings. HE later selected/endorsed Beane as HIS GM. I think it's clear that McD is a MAJOR player in the drafting.

It was said at the time that McD brought the Carolina board with him, and supposedly ticked them off as we picked there rated players before them.

He's no longer in the Inner Circle. But who knows, maybe he is a part of the Brandon Beane Appreciation Society.

I like Breece Hall. But part of me does want to see the boo boo faces if he were on the board and we chose someone else.

No, but their picks at the top of each round after their first two picks are close enough to our picks at the end of the round prior to have an effect.

McD is the main man.  He tells Beane who he wants/needs for his team and Beane works on scouting/signing those players.

At the time they were hired Terry said both men will report to him but when it comes to putting the roster together (draft/FA) that it is Beane who has the final say. When it comes to the coaching decisions(running practices, mini camp, training camp, obviously the games) then it is McDermott. I am sure both talk all the time and discuss strategy of what they want to do but according to Pegs that is how the power structure of the organization goes.

The Giants draft SO much earlier than the Bills in each round that there is no way the Giants are altering their draft strategy to keep players away from the Bills.  IF they knew a couple of players that the Bills could be targeting at the end of a given round AND they were interested in one of them, they *could* trade up to take such player.  Is that much different than what many other teams in similar situations likely know or surmise?  I doubt it.

That is a pretty scary list

I think it is still too early to dump on Epenesa and especially on Basham.  Zay Jones had a pretty good season for the Raiders.

2nd round picks, especially later in the round, are really no sure things to ever become good starters.

Robert Woods and Zay Jones have both enjoyed success after leaving Buffalo.

I think the Bills were hoping with Cody Ford...but he has played 3 full years in the NFL and may be at his ceiling.

From some of McDermott's interviews you can tell he doesn't pretend to know specific prospects in the 3rd round, but he is surely reviewing the scouts reports and has input.  Or at least provides feedback.

This year I am sure he has helped look at the various Corners and DBs.
