GunnerBill Posted October 21, 2020 Share Posted October 21, 2020 Late to this and haven't read the whole thread but what I have read elsewhere the general view seems to be "why are Miami doing this now they are 3-3 and in the playoff race!" To me that is all the more reason you do it now. Miami started the season not knowing how far away they were. But the evidence of the season so far, other than week 1 when they struggled against the Pats, is that they are really not that far away. The defense - which I predicted had a shot at being top 10 - has been good, their young receivers are playing really well, the tight ends have come to play and they might have found a young running back. Yes, Fitz has been playing well and he is a part of their success thus far, but in the past couple of weeks even the offensive line has started to come around (Solomon Kindley - one of the steals of the draft). Miami needs to not think about how it sneaks in at 9-7 this year but how it starts to build a team that genuinely competes in 2021 and beyond. They are not that far away. So get Tua in now. Let him take any lumps he needs to take and see what you have. The absolute worst thing they could do is keep Fitz in battle for a respectable 8-8 and not make the post season then spend the first half of 2021 as a good, solid roster that is let down by the inexperience of its Quarterback making rookie mistakes. Fitz is better adept at reading a Rams defense which we saw was good. Now after those two games they have the Chargers, Broncos, Jests, and Bengals. Why not let the kid play some manageable teams, may win or lose, and only put him in if Fitzy loses to the Rams and Cardinals. He would still face the Chiefs, Patriots, Raiders and us. All the best QB's were thrown in day 1 (and the sad fact is QB's like Rodgers & Mahomes had to wait). How smart was KC trading Alex Smith? Manning, Aikman, Elway, Luck, Newton, Ryan...... You start them asap and figure out what you have. While I feel terrible for Tyrod & the circumstances, best thing that could happen for the Chargers & there was never an issue with Burrow. I take back some of my comments in this thread (defending the move) due to the fact I thought Fitz would have been informed of the plan way ahead of time. You might as well dodge traffic on the interstate or stick your hand in a hive of bees. He felt this was "his team" for the first time since Buffalo? Really not the 2015 Jets? His brand has being a good teammate and acting as a mentor to young QBs. 100% the Dolphins should have talked with him before it was leaked to the press, but this (sincere) outburst won't help with team cohesion and the players rallying around, and showing patience, with Tua. The fact that this timing blindsided him is not good for the Dolphins. The players really seemed to love Fitz and the team winning, I am sure there are mixed feelings in the locker room. It appears they didn't handle this transition very well. I have to admit I was really enjoying watching Fitz play this year, he was having fun playing with his heart on his sleeve. Herbert comes off the bench and for 4 straight games is throwing accurate lasers 60 yard down field. There is no waiting for 3 years with in depth discussions on whether Herbert can be accurate or be over 60% completion percentage. We've seen Herbert be incredibly accurate 4 games in. A strong role model who is eager to show younger guys the ropes. A savvy vet who knows that he’s just holding the reins for the young thoroughbred. Give Tua 10 games this season, Dolphins have 2 firsts and 2 seconds in the next draft, Texans picks will be good. For weeks Flores said he was not ready when asked by reporters. Now he throws 2 passes and he’s suddenly ready to take over? And Fitz wasn’t given a head’s up? I do agree that he needs to play this season, but I also feel that Miami was about to hit its stride as a team. It feels like this move is sacrificing this season for Tua’s development, which might be good in the long run.
