The Pats are designed to operate a heavy formation against nickle defenses. They should be able to find a baseline amount of success with what they’re doing and I still expect them to compete most weeks. But I sure hope I’m wrong and the bottom falls out and Billy B calls it a career. And we play one of the best nickels if not the best on the league along with a high octane offense that can keep the other offense off the field. I like our chances. I kind of understand Jones not playing-- plenty of starting QBs won't be playing in their first preseason game-- but The Pats* are installing a new offensive scheme, and reports indicate that their offense hasn't had a single good showing vs. their own D in TC. Are they not ready to put these new concepts to the test in a preseason game for a series, or two? This is what preseason is for. Daniel Jones is going to play, as are most of the Giants starters (according to Brian Daboll). Trevor Lawrence, Mayfield, Darnold, Zach Wilson-- all playing. Does not bode well for Patriot* Nation, IMO.
MJS
1 hour ago, Beast said: Are they still "well coached"? Because, you know, the supposed best HC in NFL history has coached over 150 games without Tom Brady as his QB and he is sub .500 in those 150 plus games. Just like Phil Jackson was a genius when he had Michael Jordan on his roster, though Phil had a much better winning percentage without the best of all-time on his roster. You can say what you want about Brady and the offense, but Bill Belichick has taken at times some downright poor talent on defense and gotten them to play respectably. He has always been a very good defensive coach. 2 1

Much in the same way Marv Levy was fortunate. The Head Coaches that have had success at multiple locations with multiple core players are the coaches I have the most respect for. 2 2

Success
Tell ya what - the Patriots will probably still be competitive, but I don't think I've ever seen a less talented team I'd say that about. It's because of one thing, the coach. He'll hold it together w/ spit & glue like he always does, and figure out how to keep them in enough games for a respectable record. Once he retires, New England is officially done for a few decades.
Captain Hindsight
It’s so weird to me that they couldn’t find a competent OC. Beleicheat has been around forever, does he really have no connection that was willing to take the job? It’s almost like he doesn’t trust anyone outside his usual circle of assistants. But Matt Patricia? Seriously?

Given that a) the Patriots are installing a new offensive scheme, b) this is Patricia's first stint as an OC, or offensive play-caller, c) Mac & Cheese is going into only his second season, and d) by all credible accounts, the Patriots' offense has struggled mightily in training camp... not playing the starters very much feels like an offense that is not ready for television. 34 minutes ago, Success said: Tell ya what - the Patriots will probably still be competitive, but I don't think I've ever seen a less talented team I'd say that about. I'm not convinced they do anything well at this point. They still have Belichick who is the best game day coach and strategist in the league. But they also have Belichick the highly questionable GM and decision maker when it comes to drafting and pro personnel. I’m with you MGK. 20 years of angst over one team has a way of letting things get pent up to now I will never wish them well no matter who’s on the team or who they’re playing (even if it’s one of our erstwhile SB opponents). I was so disappointed we knelt on the final drive in the playoffs last year and didn’t hang a 50+ point burger on them, thus handing Belicheat only his 2nd worst ever loss…😉 1

That seems to be the general theme, its also why I think John Harbaugh is the best coach in the NFL for a long while now as he has won a lot with two QBs who are also completely different styles. Bruce Arians I have always thought pretty highly of as virtually anywhere he coached he has had a lot of success with everything from dog crap at QB (John Skelton) to Brady and Palmer. Sean McVay might be the brightest star coach in the NFL as he won with a game manager esq QB in Goff and then was able to not miss a beat and do better with Stafford. I have said for a while Brady covered up sooo much of NE's flaws they had at any point it made them invincible in many ways. BB as a gameday coach is superb and still top 5 ever, but his GM work is very middle of the road and Brady hid much of that.
