eball
Wow, I love what he said because I agree 100%! There is not a single game I watch because of who's announcing it, and there are definitely games I avoid (or mute) because of who's announcing. Kudos to someone who has made a very good living in that business for having the guts to say it. 5
Rico
Interesting. I think Madden is the only one who had the power to make casual fans watch, while Summerall zzzz certainly did not. Maybe Cosell and Dandy Don to a point. 8

I dont pay attention to them unless they say something dumb. But we have to remember a lot of people do listen to the people calling the game. I just don’t believe those people care who’s explaining what’s happening.

machine gun kelly
It’s not about the announcers for me. As much as I prefer to listen the Sirius Buffalo broadcasters, they are always on a five minute delay. I mainly listen to those guys during tv breaks. John Gianelli
It was a revelation to me when I discovered I could listen to the Spanish translation of the games by switching the language preference on my tv. I do that now whenever it's an option. I do understand Spanish, and I can say that I seldom hear the inane comments most announcers make on our main networks. Just old-school play by play, and a little commentary, with high emotion. But the emotion comes across naturally, not forced as it does with many English-speaking announcers who are perhaps trying too hard to sound excited. "Josh Allen, QUE FUERZA!" Malazan
I agree with him and corporations do a lot of dumb things, but they have to have some sort of numbers. Perhaps, it just a matter of framing.. the guys they pay big bucks to chase the fewest number of people away.. I have my suspicions it's more about attention away from the broadcast than how great they are at calling a game. If you have a circle jerk of people talking about so and so and how great they are then they're talking about your network. Go post a topic about Collinsworth sucking and watch it get several pages every time.

MJS
Some of them annoy me. Some of them I like. But there is only one that I can't stand and consider muting the TV for: Chris Collinsworth. I'll also say the Monday night guys were pretty cringe worthy last season. Those guys really annoyed me. 1

Shake_My_Head
Sure, you're going to watch the game anyway, no matter what. But announcers are part of the game, too. They can make it a better, more memorable experience, and the best ones do. Not just TV, but radio as well. What would Buffalo sports be without Van Miller and Rick Jennerette? They're both a big part of my favorite sports memories.
Ayjent
Too many go in with these preconceived approaches and just plug it all game rather than being in the moment of the game, or just overemphasize a player saying their name hundreds of times a game (e.g., Drew Brees or Brady). Some just focus on mistakes. All of those approaches miss the mark for me. Madden was great because he knew to shut up sometimes or just focus on something unique or positive in the moment of the game. Romo is good because he sees the game and is great at providing insight into the QB’s options and the formation strengths and he is sincerely likable in his approach by not being a smug jock. Lost
I would occasionally watch games I wasn't particularly interested in just because John Madden was commenting.
Billsatlastin2018
It’s Romo or the Mannings for me! Why the Networks even pay the rest of these turds, is beyond me. Bills fans know that they have gotten the bottom feeders for decades. Lazy, no nothing, uninspired, boring clowns with mikes. I’ve turned off the audio- forever! UConn James
As audio options get more advanced with ATSC 3.0 / NextGen TV and such, I really hope we’ll someday soon have the option of turning off the announcers and just listening to the sounds in the stadium & on the field. 1
The Wiz
I only notice the announcers when they go out of their way to ball wash someone for no reason. Losing 35-0, score on a 3rd and goal to make it 35-7. "And that's what makes him a great player" Umm no it doesn't because he hasn't done anything since then.
babulator
I like the insight Romo or the Mannings can bring to a game, but I don't watch a game because of them. The rest of them are just background noise.
