D521646
Just heard on the radio, sorry no link, but in the Giants presser Shurmur said when asked about Allen, that when they looked at him in 2018 they thought that one day he "might" be a starter? When pressed later on in the press conference, he repeated the statement? What does that even mean? Meanwhile McD had high praise for Eli. I find it odd that usually we hear from coaches nothing but good things to say about the team they're about to face, but Shurmur's comments caught reporters off guard? Tim-

It's clear what he was saying is, at draft time he thought Allen could be a starting NFL QB someday, not sure why that is so hard to understand.
VW82
Makes perfect sense he'd say that. Giants passed on Allen to take Barkley and now Eli looks like he's done. I expect Shurmer has heard a lot of noise about how they screwed up not going with Allen or Darnold.
x-BillzeBubba
exactly...he didn't say anything doubtful about JA..it was pre-draft and he remembered Josh as a potential starter . he was right

Coming out of the draft it looked like he could be a starting QB someday. Technically he IS a starting QB but none of us know his staying power yet. Which is fair. He could still go the direction of Favre or Bortles. If he keeps getting better he’ll start. If he doesn’t he’ll get another look or two from teams then be gone. It is a pretty honest and fair assessment of Josh Allen in early September of 2019. Shurmer is the (terrible) head coach of another franchise. He isn’t going to go into detail on where he thinks another teams QB is going to be in 5 years.

Doc Brown
You should take his opinion seriously. It's not easy as a head coach to get 15 wins on 50 attempts. 2

Tim- The Giants didn't have franchise QB ratings on any of the 2018 QBs available at 2, otherwise they would have picked one & sat him a year or 2 behind Manning. They probably had a similar rating on Barkley that most had-potential HOFer. So if you want to get on his case, he chose the most likely Hall of Famer in the draft. He knew if they drafted Allen, Allen wouldn't play as a rookie and possibly not as a sophomore either. Josh was better off going to a team where he could play instead of being a NY Giant still holding a clipboard with nobody knowing if he'd be the answer or not. Gray Beard
People like to talk about “elite” quarterbacks. “Good enough to be a starter” probably means he scouted JA and thought he would be good, but not necessarily elite. At this point in JA’s career, I wouldn’t argue with that characterization. Time will tell.

BananaSquad
The Giants were taking the best player in the draft (Saquon) so I doubt they really scouted all the QBs that deep. I think everyone knew the Browns were going QB at 1.
