All I Need is Hope Posted March 4 Share Posted March 4 With the emergence of Bernard, Dodson, Williams and Spector; and considering other holes to fill and limited cap space, does it make any sense to consider seeking a high pick for Milano? Now that Bernard has a full year under his belt… I want to see the damage they can do to opposing offenses. Tuco Posted March 4 Share Posted March 4 There is no shedding his cap hit by trading. They extended his contract last year in order to reduce huis cap hit last year. You know how that works? By taking money paid to him last year and prorating it over future years. Trading accelerates all that prorated cap to this year. In other words, keeping him costs us $12.4 million against the cap. Trading him costs us $25.2 million against the cap. Trading him would result in us losing $12.5 million in cap space, plus we wouldn't have him on the team anymore, so his replacement on the roster would cost us that much more. Switching to a 3-4 is way “sillier” than just getting rid of Milano. We would have to revamp the whole defense. We just paid Oliver and he doesn’t fit. Rousseau doesn’t fit a 3-4 at all. He can’t be a stand up OLB. Miller does (and obviously has), but who knows if he will return to form. And he’s probably only around one more season anyway. Also Bernard probably doesn’t fit either. So moving to a 3-4 would mean getting rid of pretty much everyone on the first two levels of the defense - including Milano. So that way, way, way worse. colin Posted March 4 Share Posted March 4 i'd trade him if the cap hit wasn't huge and we got tremendous value. but the cap hit is huge, and he's a great player at a lower valued position, so the value we'd get for him would very close to certainly wouldn't be huge so doesn't seem like much there. to me the greatest ability is availability, so while he's one of our best players when he's healthy, he misses enough games to be a concern. that said, he's prolly worth his contract plus to us so what would you trade him for? another expensive player or picks which may or may not work out? I’ve seen Milano in the playoffs, so far he hasn’t been that impact guy. Not sure he’ll all of a sudden be that guy as he gets deeper into his 30’s.
