Living outside of Buffalo, the opinion of Edmunds is that is a rising star.  Still do not understand the heat he got from Bills fans.

He was solid over his 5 years-  18M aav isn’t “solid” money for a MLB.

He had his best season in his contract year. His 2nd best season was year 2.

I know some folks will not agree...But this gives me so much hope for the immediate future of the Bills.

The Bills had to do some serious gut-checking this off season. The most likely move would have been to re-sign Tremaine at silly money. In fact I'm still a little shocked they didn't. But he's just not THAT good. He's OK, don't get me wrong. But he's no where near an 18M AAV player...He's just not...The Spotrac and OverTheCap Market Value numbers were MUCH closer to reality than what he got. And Beane did the right thing. I know how hard it must have been for McBeane because they love the kid. But this was the right football move.

I swear...This gives me great hope that they are going to fix what needs to be fixed...It really does. B-)

I have no negative feelings towards Tremaine.  Was a good player while here.  I’d take that money too if I was him, he will be 29 when the deal is done and be ready for another 80+ million before retiring with almost 200 in career earnings

Good for him

Us “morons” call a spade a spade.

His first 4 years he was an extremely inconsistent player. (Which is why he probably wasn’t signed to a long term extension before year 5)

Last year he was good, no doubt.

But for 18 mil a year for a guy who is very up and down and doesn’t do much in big games?

No thanks

Didn’t want him for for 18M either but that doesn’t change the fact that he was a very good and under appreciated player. I’m looking forward to all the mid season gripes about how we miss him in the middle.

This one hurts. Edmunds was asked to do A TON in that Bills defense. He’s coming off his best year. That length and athleticism will be tough to replace. Wish him the best in Chicago and hopefully we do well in replacing him.

Liability in run game.  Great in pass coverage with that length

But he Lacked instincts,  especially the killer instinct Milano played with

Not a ra ra leader I'd like as the QB of the defense

I think that part is very debatable.

If you want to say last year, sure.

But in his 5 year career , I would definitely not say Edmunds was a very good player.

Contract in the expected range. I knew some team would overpay him and one did. I do not blame him one bit for making the most money possible, but those are also the players I don’t mind seeing leave. He/his agent was smart going with a 4 year deal. I’ve been wondering if he’d go that route. He’s leaving room to get another big contract before he hits 30.

He's a better player than most Bills fans think he is, and the upside (youth, athleticism, experience, leadership) is tremendous.  He's not a perfect player but he's one of the better off-ball LBs in the league. He was great in pass pro last season, and it's a passing league.

Yup. A lot of fans want to justify losing him. He’s 24 and has made plenty of plans for us while playing the most important position on our defense. All I hear is how terrible Frazier was (he wasn’t).  Maybe the coach he helped Shaq Leonard become an all pro can do the same with TE. Really like what the bears are doing. Hammering that over.

we can’t play everyone but I think TE might be the one FA we really regret losing.

Really curious how our defense will look like next year. I will be very weird and different without Edmunds.

Agree. It will be weird not seeing a guy running around lost out there. He always brought the game day laughs in my household.

Lavonte David for 2-3 years would be an upgrade.  Physical playmaker also good in coverage

I like David but this isn’t necessary true and it’s why TE will get paid more. TE is an ascending player while David is descending. Guys get old fast in the nfl and LD was not that great last year.

I would take him but he’s declining.

Bummer. I wanted him to stay but not for that kind of money. I figured this would be the case, a team loaded with cap space was gonna throw a bag at him. Good for him, tho. Hope he does well. If he flips the switch and becomes an All-Pro we're gonna have to see every meathead here talk about how Beane screwed up and let him walk, blah blah blah.

Interested to see who they replace him with... I don't think he's currently on the roster, I'll say that much. Bernard doesn't exactly jump off the page for me, I feel like he's got career special teams guy written all over him. Better not be ol' AJ Klein either! Haha.

Did Roquan Smith get that kind of money? Because you would've thought they would've just paid him instead.

It's unfortunate. When your career is over you probably think of the big games you won not the numbers in your bank account. He will never play in any big games with the Bears. Whether you have 45 mil guaranteed or 50 mil, those are both absurd numbers that you don't need to live a good life

Lucky for him he’s played in a ton of big games already. We’re 4-3 in the playoffs the last 3 seasons. Where’ve you been the last few years?  Before you bring up SB’s, most players don’t make to one, don’t do it. Time to get paid and he did. When he’s retired I’m his early 30’s, that money is going to look really good. Happy for him.

Did we have any close to a dominant DT for him to play behind?

I agree TE has his issues but dude takes way too much blame on this board. We have undersized DTs who get blown up a lot.

You think he's going to be sitting there with $50,000,000 in his bank account and zero playoff games he's going to be happy with his career?  When he could have had $45,000,000 and playoffs every year and possibly super bowls?  You don't think a super bowl player can make up that $5 mil extra in appearances?  Nobody is paying the LB from one of the worst teams for appearances when they can get the guys that were in the super bowl

I liked Edmunds and I would have been happy to have him back, but not at that price.  I would have opposed signing him if you told me that he was going to get $18M/year.

Go out and get a solid, unremarkable MLB.  Or draft one.  Then put the savings into the OL.  Our first priority needs to be keeping hands off #17.

We have needs on offense that 18 million can go far. 49 can be very good but he can also take bad angles and be incredibly bad. He’s too inconsistent for a contract pushing 20 mill a year. I wish him well since he’s going from a Super Bowl contender to a team that won’t see the playoffs for at least two years. good luck man

The funniest thing was if we had the cap room, this board would be over the moon if we signed a 24 year old with his tools and production.

You also have to consider he had his best year in a contract year and just got paid.  Is this an upswing or a peak?

Tremaine is a good, solid player and teammate. I'm happy that he's getting paid but at that price I'm also happy it's not us who is having to pay him. As far back as his draft scouting reports, and pretty much continuously since, his perceived lack of instincts (accounting in the opinion of some for the lack of big plays) has been flagged as a weakness. The Bills obviously hoped this aptitude would develop but it would seem that the needle has pretty much remained where it always was. To me the Bears are paying as though this issue had been favourably resolved. I see no evidence that it has.
It will be most interesting to see the Bears fans reactions as the season progresses now that Tremaine is replacing Roquan, who imo is  better. Bears picked him ahead of where Tremaine was taken when they were drafted. I'll also be interested to see if the Bears use him in the same or in different ways than the Bills. The guy's physical attributes are so impressive that some change to his responsibilities might lead to better results.

Did you have the Eagles wirh Hurts making the SB before the Bills with Allen?

Not saying Edmunds is this guy, but there's a certain type of player who is okay-but-nothing special for his first several seasons, blows up during his contract year, and signs the richest offer sheet put up by a perennial laughingstock when he hits FA.  Those guys don't tend to work out.

Now, Edmunds is an unusual case because he was so young when he entered the league.  But still.

Mixed feelings.

Pretty sure that Tremaine Edmunds won't be worth the highest Linebacker contract in the entire NFL.  You have to be smart with extensions, and I can't blame the Bills for letting him walk for that.  However, this does significantly hurt our defense.  As will the very likely loss of Jordan Poyer.

Many of us (myself included) would much rather see the Bills use those dollars on upgrading the offensive side of the ball.  Unfortunately, I anticipate our front office making it a bigger priority to replace Edmunds/Poyer.  Which means we probably use up our cap space without moving the needle on offense.  More average/subpar signings that will hopefully compete for starting spots.  Meh.

I agree. He's not worth 18 mil. a year. However, the Bills do have a major hole to fill now.

Just feels like a same old Bills free agency. A defensive player we use a 1st round pick on walks entering his prime, but hey, here’s a crappy guard. Next up is a backup TE and a substitution package edge rusher who doesn’t have any bend. But don’t worry, there’ll be a washed WR at some point.
