Paup 1995MVP
1 hour ago, Peevo said: It's been forever since I've posted anything, but something struck a nerve when listening to Howard Simon this morning. Howard and Jeremy were debating whether Jerry Hughes qualifies as a Wall of Famer, and Schobel's name inevitably came up. Schobel has 55 more sacks than Hughes, despite being on TERRIBLE teams. Schobel retired a career Bill, with 4 double-digit sack seasons, an All Pro, 2 Pro Bowl appearances. But yet, what the hell happened to the guy? A quick google search reveals literally 0 media appearances since his retirement. The last time his name was PUBLISHED in any sort of NFL media was 2010, regarding his retirement. The dude is a ghost. No charity events, no interviews, no signings/conventions/appearances of any kind that I can find. And one could debate whether a player's community impact matters in the Wall of Fame discussion. But I'd certainly argue being visible and proud of your career as a Bill SHOULD count in some ways. Look at Stevie Johnson, Aaron Williams' social media feeds/NFL Draft appearances. There's plenty of other examples. Hell, even Marshawn Lynch "Lead the Charge" last season! He was a Bill for like 3 seasons. This dude played fulltime NFL football, at a very high level, FOR A DECADE. And never was heard from again. I'd NEVER fault a man for performing well at a job he doesn't like. That's life. But I mean this sincerely, did Schobel ever actually like his job? Unless I'm bad at the internet, which is certainly possible, does ANYONE know anything about this guy since he left 12 years ago? Schobel was a very good player in a dark decade for the Bills. He was not a social media type of guy. He was a country Texan boy. Always was a little surly a little cranky. But not a total jerk. (It was probably tough to be real happy playing football on those Bills teams. Although the 6 game run in late 2004 was fun. Unfortunately it collapsed like a house of cards against Pittsburgh in the last game of the season. Ouch that was an ugly one. The ghost of Willie Parker still roams the earth.) But the guy could play. As to the debate about whether Jerry Hughes is a Wall of Famer. I lean towards no. He was a good player (but never a great player) for a lot of years. No shame in that. The wall needs to be for the best who wore the Bills jersey in my opinion. Cornelius Bennett Eric Moulds and Kyle Williams should be up there.

TheyCallMeAndy
I’m so glad Schobel is held so highly on this board, he was bashed all the time on BBMB and his accomplishments were devalued. People used to say he got garbage time sacks, and that was proven to be untrue. He did some interview with the team for legends day a few years ago, otherwise I think he’s living a quiet life. I remember a rumor he wanted to come out of retirement when the team signed Mario Williams, can you imagine that DL? 1 1

BADOLBILZ
Schobel's very premature retirement was the product of the Bills incredible dysfunction at the time. When Marv took over as GM he put on his paper hat and apron and walked around the locker room hand taking orders for which teams players wanted to be traded to and pretty soon that rat-fink agent Eugene Parker set up shop in there to cash in on their weak-willed management team. By the time Buddy Nix took over Schobel was demanding that he be able to just fly in for game days to play. Buddy was no genius but he knew sh*t was totally out of control with the players leading the organization around by the d*ck so knew he had to call Schobel's bluff. So being stubborn as a Texas mule........and sick of the losing........Schobel retired to the restaurant life. I know he considered joining the Patriots but Buddy wouldn't relinquish his rights. Probably why we will never see Schobel around again. Edited May 11, 2022 by BADOLBILZ

I sent over a year ago, he has the most per game of all time. 2003 yards in 14 games was incredible.
