CNYfan
As long as the "whipping boy" subject is predominant in this thread I want to take this opportunity to defend M. Stevenson (#5). I think it is way too early to give up on him and decide after a few plays that "he has no vision" and/or "only has straight line speed". While both of those may be true, I don't want to jump to any conclusions without giving the young man a full chance. I think the sample size is too small to make those conclusions, in a concrete sense.

Still can't wrap my head around how he opted out an entire season due to COVID and then never got vaccinated. Was he the only NFL player that opted out and then didn't get vaccinated? Think it's safe to say he used Covid as an excuse to sit out and get a free $150K (or whatever it was they paid opt-outs). He was gone this year either way, but his dead cap would've been much easier to manage if he didn't sit out.

That actually makes sense from a logical standpoint. If you're dead set against vaccination, but still afraid of catching COVID, I'd say it makes sense to sit out and isolate yourself. It's not the choice I would have made for myself, but I can see where he was coming from.
todd
He sat out 2020 for COVID reasons, and that is totally valid. Then he came back and decided not to get vaccinated. Huh? Then he caught COVID, and was out for a good while and never recovered. He had some great games, but you never had to game plan for him. He was rarely available. Good guy, but lots of availability problems. Decent but not great player. 2

I do remember that when we replaced Shaq Lawson and the 3 yr, $30M, $20.8M guaranteed contract he signed with Miami by signing Mario Addison for 3 yr, $30.4M, $13.2M guaranteed - people looked at the stats and felt it was an upgrade. Likewise, when we replaced Jordan Phillips and the 3 year, $30M, $14.5M guaranteed contract he signed with AZ with Vernon Butler for 2 years, $15M with $9.3M guaranteed AND Q Jefferson for 2 yrs, $13.5M, $6.3M guaranteed And maybe it was - I believe we got more out of Addison than Miami got out of Shaq, and we got more out of Butler (though playing out of position in 2020) than Miami got out of Phillips, who struggled with injuries there. But it wasn't what we thought we were getting at the time of the signing.

MAJBobby
Hmmmm if it was just for the 1.5M guessing they need it now to process the agreed to contracts already. Which would be a bit worrisome for filling the rest of the holes I see before draft like a couple Corners. because no reason not to process as a Post June 1. Unless the 1.5M was an immediate need to be able to process the “outstanding contracts”.

Utah John
1 hour ago, Hapless Bills Fan said: I'll try. A player's cap hit consists of yearly cash (salary and per-year bonuses like roster and workout). The player also gets a signing bonus fully paid to him when he signs his contract, but amortized over the years of the contract. For example, a $10.4M signing bonus on a 4 year contract would be transferred to Star's bank account immediately when he signs. but for salary cap bookkeeping, it can be divided into 4 chunks to count against the salary cap at $2.6M/year. The player can also have all or part of his yearly cash (salary and roster and option bonuses) guaranteed. In Star's case, he had $2.5M of his 2022 salary guaranteed. When the player is cut, the guaranteed part of his yearly cash counts against the cap ($2.5M for Star), as does the chunk of his signing bonus that counts against this year's cap ($2.6M for Star). The team gets credit for any non-guaranteed salary or bonuses. So that's $5.1M guaranteed for this year against Star's yearly cap hit of $9.2M, resulting in $4.1M cap savings. BUT WAIT! Now we get to the decision point: when a player is cut, any guaranteed money or amortized signing bonus from future years ALSO get charged against the cap savings. So in Star's case, he has another chunk of $2.6M signing bonus on the books for next season. That counts against the savings - so $4.1M - $2.6M means we only save $1.5M this season UNLESS - the NFL allows the team to designate two players cut during FA as "post-June 1 cuts". What that does, is allow the team to defer next year's guaranteed money or remaining chunks of amortized signing bonus to count against NEXT year's cap. It's "good for the player" because it encourages teams to release players early when they have a better chance to be signed by other teams; it's "good for the team" because they can spread out the cap hit from cutting a player over two seasons. The drawback is, the team does not realize the cap savings until after June 1. So with Star: Cut pre-June 1, $9.2M cap - $2.5M guaranteed salary - $2.6Mx2 amortized signing bonus for this year and next = $1.5M cap savings applicable NOW Cut post-June 1, $9.2M cap - $2.5M guaranteed salary - $2.6M amortized signing bonus for this year and next = $4.1M cap savings applicable June 1 AND $2.6M amortized signing bonus charged against the 2023 cap. Nicely done. 1 1

Utah John
The message to the Bills players and the rest of the NFL is that in Buffalo, you produce or you're gone. That tough love approach would be deadly if the Bills had a bad team, but it's great when the Bills are strong. Players who want to be on the best team know they have to deserve it. Maybe this is why McKissic backed out. Didn't want to risk being found out as not all that, so he settled for a safe spot on a bad team.
