9.5 handicap after playing only for a year, and with no lessons? That’s seriously nuts.

Really depends how often you are playing….

I'd be doing 6 rounds a week if my wife was a nightmare.

It is, but it certainly helps to be a world-class athlete as well.  By hole 13-14 (no cart) I'm usually like "How many holes do we have left??"  🤪

Poyer clearly attacked the game with some serious determination - glad it helped him out so much!!!

Same my friend. I’m lucky to get out one day a weekend… I can only imagine having 7 months of work off. I’d be playing 36 on a daily basis….

Of course playing that much means you are financially independent.  That in and of itself helps too......

Golf actually makes me drink.

The 18th hole bar traditions say that you're not alone.

I kind of had that thought when I read golf was a place where he could "Be myself, have my own thoughts":

"you mean, as opposed to echoing Rachel's?"

Also credits Lorax for helping him get his life straight

Not surprised by Lorax still being a positive influence beyond retirement nor that poyer is gifted at yet another sport (for anyone not aware, he was drafted to MLB)

Props to Poyer on getting sober. Hope he has the structure in place to maintain it...

As far as Lorax goes, not surprised he was there for a teammate.

I think the loss of his leadership and intensity was more significant to the overall performance of the D last year than we realize.

I think all these NFL guys are exceptional athletes.  Remember Poyer was drafted in MLB as well.

Dawkins said about Allen that he could have gone pro in just about any sport with the right coaching.

Still pretty amazing that Poyer got so good without lessons.

Damn...I thought it was serious when I heard a chick say last night a DJ saved my life...

I mean that's awesome golf helped him get his life in order...but I have one question to ask.

Can he do it in the mix?  Ha! I thought not!

At least you forget how many holes left to play.  Most a**h**** forget how many times they hit the ball. 🤨

For players who retire with team (i.e. Wood, Lorax, Kyle) they should be offered assistant positions during playoffs and then when we win Superbowl they can get their rings.

The brain hasn't gone as quickly as the body yet, but yeah some guys do conveniently "forget" how to do math out on the course. 🤔

Honestly the part that pisses me off the most is slow play.  Guys all checking out each other's upcoming putt on the green (like it'll make any difference) when the fairways and tee box are filled with folks waiting to hit a ball.  🤬🤬

Yeah, his athleticism probably helps a lot. But even the greatest athletes struggle with golf, given how counter intuitive and highly mechanical it is. I think Poyer probably has an elite “sports IQ” more than anything.

I had the good fortune of playing golf with a lot of NFL Players at charity events over the years. I think the athleticism only gets you so far. Some of these guys play many times per week (the retired ones), and they are 20 handicappers, at best, and hitting your bad slices and worm burners, etc.

Golf is a great escape/diversion for many alcoholics/drug addicts.  I know Alice Cooper also says that golf saved his life.

Lawrence Taylor said the same thing as well.  Golf really is a great compromise for people with addictive personalities.  It can become a replacement vice for people who struggle with drugs and alcohol.  Even for me personally, to a lesser extreme, but when I was coming off my harder partying years, golf kind've became my replacement "fix"

Some people can just do $%^& the rest of us can’t. I know a couple guys like that. “What’s so hard about this?”

I’ve never punched them, but I thought about it.  🤷‍♀️

I am ALL FOR whatever leads to a healthy and happy life for him. Lawrence Taylor got hooked on golf, I believe. He’s still around.

I was going to bring up Alice to, BB.

that, and other things, have proof to make his life a remarkable turn around. Not the least of which, is that he’s now a person of faith. I’m not judging anyone who doesn’t believe, but I know it has helped Alice out.

Very happy Poyer got his life back on track.

For a professional athlete I’m not at all surprised to see him get his handicap down that quickly.  Golf is all about muscle memory and focus.  Think too much and you’re doomed.  An athlete conditioned to be disciplined can handle that.

As a former alcoholic myself, it means so much to me that he speaks out about his issues while breaking the stigma. Makes me feel like less of a nut when a successful, good looking dude like Poyer literally goes through the same thing I do. It just proves how alcoholism (and drug addiction) can touch anyone, anywhere.
