Who are the odd men out on DL after we drafted Rousseau and Basham?

I think Hughes gets traded.

He's the only one worth anything.

Huh?  The fact that he is the only producing defensive end on a team with Super Bowl aspirations, really easily refute that really dumb claim.

I think players could always "opt out" but last year it was a much bigger deal and changes were made to the process because of Covid. I don't see anyone doing so this season but who knows

I'm wondering if the league will let players opt out this year, again.

I dont think so......but maybe.  Even if they do, I bet we will be able to count opt outs on 1 hand league wise.   There are a lot more known about COVID now and with vaccines available, the risks are small.

He won't be dressed? Is he gonna play nekkid? I like the pick even more now.... 😈

One would presume so, but Brandon Beane last night every time he was asked about Rousseau and Epenesa as the future kept saying "and Darryl Johnson". Of course we are in April, things change but he made a real point of throwing him in that mix on multiple occasions.

Good catch on the Beane presser, and agree based on listening to that as well.

I think we've set ourselves up for a great rotation this year, Epenesa's development is critical but same with rest of the guys doing their part and Greg hopefully making an impact early on.

Interior, I'm still curious if they go after a Marvin Wilson type in round 2 or 3.  There's question marks across that interior, Zimmer/Harrison I'd consider good depth, but absolutely could be improved upon.  Oliver taking a step would be huge, and I think he will.

Round 2 and 3, I'd be shocked if we didn't look hard at CB and WR.  I think there's great value there, and would fit a need for us (wr is a sneaky need imo, with how often we run 4 wrs).

The DL is overpriced, and Beane is going to need the money to sign Josh Allen.

Addison re-structured so it will help him stay. Cap savings for Hughes puts a target on his back.

The wildcard is Star, especially if they draft a DT.

Johnson stays just for Special Teams alone.

Addison and Hughes are both on the last year of their contracts.

Allen can be extended with little to no impact on the cap this year, and possibly not too much next year depending upon how the contract is structured.

I think the Bean-meister made it clear our first round pick could well be a guy we don't expect to start this season, but expect to start next year.

Huh? No, it was a special NFLPA/NFL provision negotiated for last season and all indications are it won't be allowed this season.  You can retire, but you can't press the "pause" button on your contract and collect $150,000.

Thought of that too but Hughes is our best DE and produces extremely well even at his age. Not sure that $6.3 million could be spent better than on Hughes. Good point on Addison - I think he's on the roster for sure.

Going to come down to Johnson or Obada - maybe one get's dealt for a mid-rounder.

My personal guess is that barring injuries or unexpected competition in camp, Addison and Hughes stay with Epenesa and Rousseau as their understudies.

There's a great book called "Sway" by Ori Brafman about "the irresistable pull of irrational behavior".  There's a passage where he talks about the most significant predictor of playing time in the NBA.  Turns out it's not per-minute productivity on the court, or practice performance by measurable metrics.  It's where a player was drafted.

I like Zimmer, Johnson, and what I know of Obada but they got their work cut out for them.

Must be wrong - I thought I remembered Eric Berry had a chance opt out for a season because of his cancer diagnosis but he was able to return regardless.

I know it is little bit early but I am curious what do you guys think.

If I remember correctly last season we had 10 DL on roster: Hughes, Addison, Epenesa, Johnson, Jefferson, Murphy, Oliver, Butler, Phillips, Zimmer. We usually dressed 9 of them based on their health and form.

From these guys 2 have left (Murphy and Jefferson), and 3 were added - Lotulelei, Rousseau and Obada.

So we need to cut/trade one guy and make inactive one more. Who do you guys think are the most likely candidates as of now?

I guess Zimmer is the obvious choice for cutting, but if we dress 9 one more needs to be omitted on gamedays. Is it Phillips as things stand right now? I am not sure if he is 1T or 3T, but if he is Star's primary backup then we need to make inactive someone else.

Things could get even more interesting if we draft 1TDT round 3 or 5.

🙏Please be you! Please be you!🙏

They drafted him to play.  He had 15.5 sacks and about 20 tackles for loss in 7 games.  He's got "traits."  He will play.  Ofada is a beast, and this line is going to be much better.  Johnson is great at special teams, so he might be safe.  Maybe Zimmer goes to the practice squad.  We still have a bunch of picks, and Beane has a history of signing people to fill needs.

I was hoping for JOK, but apparently Beane got his guy.

If I’m not mistaken, Addison took a pay cut, not a restructure that locks him to us.  Hughes is the only vet with consistent production, he’s here, AJE, Rousseau are locks, Obada is a load of potential, I don’t see him not keeping a spot, I personally think Johnson should have been out there more last year.  To me you are sending Addison on his way.

Means he doesn't think he can contribute right away.  Which I said is why he isn't being dressed but will need to take up a roster spot, so you are losing a player from another position.

Your taking he needs development to mean he won’t dress, before the kid has so much as stepped on the field. You don’t like the pick we all get it. But he’s a first round pick he will be in the rotation. He produced in college with 15.5 sacks, had a valid reason for opt out. Seems like a good kid who wants to be here. A lot more to like than not.

When you look at it, the Bills have the same body type DE over and over.

Johnson is 6'6" 4.82

Obada is 6'6" 4.63

Epenesa is 6'6" 5.04

And now Rousseau is 6'6" 4.68

So there is redundancy there.

You would think the DE's they would keep are Hughes, Addison, Epenesa, Rosseau and the last spot between Johnson and Obada because neither has been a starting caliber pro.

DT is Oliver, Zimmer, Star, Butler, Phillips.

Maybe the Bills try and trade Oliver while he still has draft stock upside and keep Zimmer?

Because the way it stands now, Oliver is not an every down player, he's not been a difference maker.

If Rousseau is ready and shows well in camp, I could see the bills going leaner on defensive tackle

Add in that the bills have been able to find production from practice squad and wavier wire pick ups at defensive tackle

Kind of a lets keep the most talent and see how it goes, if it isn't working look to pick someone up

He's just not very good.  Has a lot of work to do.  Is not a top 4 DE on the roster.

He has a lot of work to do but he instantly gets snaps on 3rd downs rushing inside. Its not even a question really. We used shaq the same way at times

So it is your thinking that a first round pick, in a position of need will not dress for the season, am I hearing this correctly? Because if I am, you are seriously confused, nuthin but luv, but...

I am in the minority, but I really like Daryl Johnson. Every time he is on the field he makes things happen. Coming in he couldn't have been more raw, but he has worked and you see an NFL player forming there. He is also a key special teams guy. He is still very young and I believe Beane when he talks about Johnson with the Epenesa's and Rousseau's of the world. Eventually, this is what all of our DEs will look like. Super long and big and tall. The Hughes and Addison types will be phased out imo.

If guys wind up on the chopping block, imo, its would be an interior guy since these guys can play inside as well.

It's a position of need, but Rouse is not the immediate fix to it.  Please tell me who you are sitting?  Hughes, Addison, Epenesa, Obada, or Johnson who plays a HUGE role of ST.  Most likely 4 will be dressed.

I thought Addison would get cut/moved, but his pay cut and restructure indicate that he will be on the team this pear, per Buffalo Rumblings:

Quote

Addison will save the Bills $2 million by taking a pay cut. We reported on those details earlier.

The two sides also changed the structure of the deal. He gets a roster bonus of $1.9 million up front instead of the originally scheduled $800,000. His base salary dropped by $3.1 million as a result; $2 million to the pay cut and $1.1 million as a new roster bonus. Also, the team guaranteed $3 million of his salary. He’ll be back this season for sure.

I don't want to be rude, but I don't know how you can possibly believe that. Just because Zimmer had one flashy play last season doesn't mean he's even close to on par with Oliver.

Why is it that fans default to the GM and HC can’t deal with having this guy on the roster? How lame is that, really... as if that scenario has never happened before in the football world...,  on to round two, Go Bills!!!

So who you sitting?  You sitting Obada, who has much more NFL success?  What you doing about special teams with Johnson?

This guy ain't seeing the field unless 2 DEs get hurt.

I would start him over both those guys you mentioned easily.

I'm not saying I'd do this tomorrow, but Oliver is the 9th overall pick and there hasn't been much to see.

When we talk about lineman on their way out, how does Oliver not start coming up now?

When we talk about odd-man out, Addison is expensive, so is Star. There is definitely a glut of DEs now, all in the same mold.

🙄

Whether or not you agree with it, the defensive philosophy of McDermott and of Frazier is that no DLman, especially no DT, is an every down player

So when Oliver is playing 48-68% of the snaps, that's because their philosophy is to rotate DL

Don't get me wrong, I like Justin Zimmer.  I hope he takes a step, and I hope we have a place for him.  I liked him when he peanut-punched Cam Newton, and I liked him even better when he damned near ran down Tyreek Hill from behind in the AFCCG.  He's my guy.  But the idea to trade a first round pick who (according to McDermott) was "playing very well" at the end of last season and who gets 50% of the snaps, in favor of keeping a guy who has bounced around 3 teams and managed to work his way up to 25-35% of the snaps, is just weird.

He's no longer under contract after this season

If you mean this season?  No way, he'll stay.
