clearly you don't watch football closely.

That’s true, because Lewis is MUCH worse than Tolbert was. I will give Lewis some credit, he did improve this past season, in that he didn’t almost single-handedly cost the Bills 2 games like he did the previous year

Better signing and better player than people are giving him credit for. Prospect I was interested in coming out of the Draft. 1 of 4 Safeties left that I thought could be a Starter for us.

I'm thinking the plan is Edwards, Rapp, and a mid round pick (perhaps even a 2nd). Maybe they could still sign Blackmon too. But my guess is that it was either or.

Last I heard on Blackmon was that we wanted his contract to be based on Incentive "performance based variable pay". My guess is that he wasn't willing to sign on to that and is still looking. Maybe he doesn't get a better offer and doubles back. But I think Edwards was brought in bc of that.

Pretty much the same. This wasn’t my favorite choice and I think we should be concerned. The good thing is that it’s March and Beane is trying to plug holes. I am curious to see what the money is.

If this is the best we can afford, our coaching staff will be challenged to put a product on the field that meets fan expectations.

Ok.

Hyde was pretty bad as the season wore on last year.  And Poyer really wasn't a lot better.  Rapp and Edwards should be a decent upgrade from our overall safety play last year.  If we can sign a D lineman or two in the next couple weeks, then come draft day take WR 1st round.  Trade up in the 2nd round for the best safety available.  And with whatever draft picks we have left bring in another WR and DL.  Beane hasn't exactly been cooking with his drafting of D Lineman.  Rousseau and Epenesa are solid, but not shown to be spectacular.  Although I think AJ is ready to be a boss this year.  And Rousseau makes plays.  He just disappears some games.  Has to be consistently good week in and week out.  Don't think he has greatness in him.  Although I would hope I am wrong.  Didn't Bruce Smith explode in 1988, which was his 4th season in the league, like Rousseau will be?

Cover One says Bills liked him at Senior Bowl.

The Bills usually sign guys they've followed for a while.  They generally know what they're getting.  They must like him as a sleeper starter.

If we stand pat, I say draft one in the 4th.

I think this is an underrated signing.  This guy has played on a championship D for several years. He's a ballhawk. I get Hyde vibes from him when he was signed. He will be the starter, I also think we draft a S high, possibly in second rd

hmmm what makes you say that?

He is definitely not Justin Simmons,  I would be happy with someone that is even close to Simmons,  a lot of negative feedback on his performance over the past two years with the Buc's then KC.  Just not a game changing type of player like Simmons was.

That’s exactly what he is.  He wasn’t particularly good when he had to start, but he wasn’t a liability and that’s all you can ask from a backup.  I would be pretty surprised if both he and Rapp were first string next year.  They’re both the type of player who you can get by with if the rest of the defensive backfield is solid, but neither are really plus players.  Good signing assuming he’s in the $2 million range for sure.

I’m fine with the player but I don’t understand the reasoning to rush out and spend on Rapp and Edwards when there is still so much talent available at safety. Someone needs to tell Brandon it’s ok to sit on your hands for a bit. Even if we miss out on Rapp and Edwards there’s equal or better talent that will still be available after the draft at safety. Just my opinion

Reminds me of what people said when Poyer signed here …

Interesting…The Chiefs paid him $3m last year … did they overpay him?

I don’t think they were complaining when the SB came around…

Was Hamlin not inactive for most of the season while Lewis was? Did the Bills not just give Lewis a new 2 year deal. I'd say hes more in their future plans than Hamlin.

Lewis is a nickel corner and a special teams player. They gave him a 2 year deal to continue his role as Taron Johnson's backup.

Hamlin is a safety. And not sure if you heard but he died on the field less than a year prior to most of the 2023 season, which is why he was inactive for most of the season. I expect him to be back to his old self in 2024.

His old self wasn’t good. He’s a worse version of Rapp imo and I’m not a big Rapp fan. More of a country guy 😆

Completely fine with whatever this staff does at Safety.

….as long as it’s not in the first round.

Seems to me that we have two guys who start if needed, but can also be the third Safety for the other and another FA signing or draft pick.

Yea I'm not getting the hate over this at all.

The FS for a top 3 D in the league.

That's won 2 SBs.  That will work.

smh okay boss whatever you say. He was more than healthy enough to play last year he was cleared by multiple specialists to continue playing. Lewis is going into safety before Hamlin

A bit short for a safety, but not alarmingly so.  Otherwise, his measurables are decent (athleticism and body mass).  I'd be more comfortable with Edwards starting than Hamlin.  Still room for an upgrade.

This thread proves that most of us can be talked into liking just about any signing.  Pretty much everyone would have preferred Blackmon before this signing, and some still do, but it is only a matter of time until we are enamored by his 2 SB rings, impressive stat line despite only 28 career starts and the fact that he “would have” been a starter had he been on a different team, he’s cheaper for the Bills  (oh and he hasn’t torn an ACL / Achilles yet either) ….. and therefore he’s a better signing than Blackmon.  Just wait.

Has anyone said that?  Most outright state "I would have preferred Blackmon..."

We definitely weren’t complaining.  $3 million was a good deal.  Given the state of the FA Safety market right now, I’m guessing Buffalo got him for that or less which is a solid deal.  If you’re expecting a high end backup or lower end but serviceable starter, you’re going to be happy.  If you’re expecting him to be peak Jordan Poyer they you’re going to be disappointed.

They’re similar as both can be versatile. Former CBs, McDermott likes former CBs at safety.

Blackmon has more of that dog in him IMO. Leader type. That’s what I wanted here.
