Old news?  I didn't see it reported here and Tasker/WGR just announced it 20 minutes ago.  Sounds pretty new to me.  Didn't mean to bug ya

It’s in the “new punter” thread from this morning … no worries. I also considered starting a new thread but it is only draft diamonds that had it and I was waiting on a better source. But I think he’s probably right.

Is he really a top punter or did he pad his stats by putting in high altitude?

He's a middle-of-the-pack punter as far as average punt distance - true both in Denver and in Detroit (dome) which is important 'cuz it means wind didn't faze him.

The more important stats are hard(er) to find - how many punts into the EZ vs pinned inside the 20 or inside the 10?

He's capable of the occasional 68, 69 yarder.

The occasional boomer is important but actually, directional punting and the ability to pin the opponent deep matter too - as does avoiding blocks and shanks.

He was a dual-purpose kicker in Detroit - kicked off as well as punted, so he may offer some positional flexibility which the Bills always love.

Some guy just lit me up on Facebook a few days ago with that argument when I said he’d be my top free agent target. He was super passionate about it as well.

Think there was something like 0.6 yards between his stats with the Lions and the Broncos.

He also put the Denver opponents inside the 20 on a lot of his punts, which tends to hold down your average distance, but is a valuable skill.

His net return was better in away games last year than at home.

Yeah, but not by much. 43.2 vs. 42.6.

Last year, his avg punt was 47.0 at home, vs 44.6 and his long at home was 68 yards, vs. 59 on the road.  Those are not MAJOR differences, and may be common amongst all punters home vs away, but not they are enough to think he might get a bit of an altitude boost.

Even though his net yards away is a only a bit better than home, it dispels the idea that his stats are inflated.

Statistically speaking, that is not actually true. The most accurate measurement to determine punt distance (purely from a statistical perspective) is Avg. punt distance.  Other factors contribute to the net yardage stat, such as the punt coverage team may play better at home, and get to the ball quicker.

All of that being said, I like Martin and will be happy if we sign him.  Either way, he's got a good leg.  and hopefully he is a competent holder. ;)
