So, we have a guy that's never been accused of being a racist before. No evidence of such to my knowledge. And then we are going to assume he was dumb enough to put a racist statement in black and white where it will never go away?

I suppose.....but after his explanation I am going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

My bad….his explanation TOTALLY MAKES SENSE

He's trying to frame the narrative of what he said. He's saying he was calling the guy a liar because apparently saying someone has rubbery lips means that to him(never heard of that). But he didn't say the guys lips were rubbery or even that they were like a tire which would be vague enough to mean rubbery. He said they were the size of tires. Whatever you feel about what he said aside, his explanation smells like bull#### to me.

I can see how you would feel that way, honestly. But not passing the smell test in my book doesn’t equate to loss of job for a guy who has no other history of racist actions or remarks

His explanation just doesn't make any sense.

Well, if it doesn't make any sense to you why aren't you calling for his head? I mean, he was in his mid 40's when he made this statement. It's either he's racist or he isn't.

And I'm not saying that just that his explanation is baloney.

See this guy gets it.

Teenage Josh Allen posts rap lyrics (having worked with teens for 20+ years they [post music lyrics .. even if they shouldn't) vs a grown man making obvious racial comments .. I do not see the correlation at all.

I’ve never had anything but dislike for Gruden. He was good on TV, but not a great coach or person.  I was in the Tampa market and would hear comments from players there during his time (taking credit for Tony Dungy’s team) in Tampa.

I also had some personal experiences as our sons traveled in some of the same high school football circles. These comments and his ridiculous (to me anyway, a guy who has never heard a liar called “rubber lips”) way to cover his tracks do not surprise me at all. Gruden is all about Gruden and I can’t begin to describe how happy I am he is not the coach of our team. I’d have some difficult decisions to make.

Did anyone else read the topic and think Gruden sent an e-mail regarding Smith when he was ten years old?

Gruden would sell you that if he thought you might buy it! He’s that kinda guy!

Even if that ridiculous explaination of "rubber lips" is truthful (Call me skeptical but I do not believe it is) comparing a man of color's lips to car tires of all things IS a racist analogy.

The league may not mandate termination, however if Davis is AT ALL wanting to move on this is his chance to get out of that huge contract.

Can he though?  If this was 10 years ago it preceded the contract by quite a bit. Davis/Raiders had their own due diligence to perform. I guess we can't really know, it's all in the wording of the contract, which we don't have

Really ignorant comments but it was 10 years ago and he didn't work for the NFL at the time.

I'm not sure how they would justify a suspension or any action against Gruden.

Pretty sure all of us have said something in texts, emails or Twitter posts that wouldn't have looked great at some point during our lives. Not excusing the behavior but I mean even some pretty serious crimes have a statute of limitations under 10 years

So, in addition to saying "who cares" about racist comments you double down with sexism and misogyny. Really wish ToS would let me say more here....

That’s right! 👍

I was inspired after watching Dave Chappelle’s “The Closer”...good stuff...😉

He's full of *****. He didn't say his lips were rubbery he said they were the size of tires, but nice try though.

Well tires are made from rubber, it isn't much if a stretch to see it was following along his habit of calling someone rubbery lips if he felt they weren't totally honest. If Gruden held racist views I'm sure it would have surfaced long ago as he is in a profession that has a larger than average percentage of minorities than in most employment settings.

I just don't think he could hold racist views and be able to hide it in his position for the entirety of his career.  If he has then we've all lost on seeing the finest actor and he truly chose the wrong profession.

True. But from what I understand most contracts have conduct clauses that can cause a void. If Gruden's has one or not we have no way of knowing.

And I've still yet to see anyone who's ever heard of an idiom for rubber and liars.

They can't nullify his contract for conduct that happened years before he signed it.

This is the only thing I could find about rubber and lips (which isn't associated with lying)

Quote

(verb) To accidentally mangle the pronunciation of a word due to lingual clumsiness. This happens when you stumble over a word you can usually pronounce, or when you find a specific combination of sounds you simply cannot make yourself pronounce.

What’s your point? They were 6-2 last year. The man got $100 million, is 22-30 and hasn’t made the playoffs once.  Horrible contract.

Ok, he’s a horrible 3-1 Coach.    You had to say something relevant to get him and fit in.

Get over it.

Society needs to find more productive ways to spend its energy otherthan to continually chase every single slightly offensive thing done in the history of mankind.

The outrage mob is actually holding back any advance that society makes with the constant focus on race.
