UConn James
Edmunds ain’t an All-Pro, for one. A number of opponents have been rushing on this D with relative ease / for big gains in the past few years. And maybe that’s due partly to scheme…. But I’m just going to write the obvious here: there’s a LOT riding on this season for him wrt his role & future on the team and his contract. Sharky7337
Leonard is a three time all pro and makes a bigger impact so the ceiling for Edmunds has been set and he wouldn't get the same. Edited August 8, 2021 by Sharky7337

So yes this year he def wont "sniff the deal" next year with higher cap and if he improves that might be his deal. The ceiling for one year is usually closer to the floor the next year. Ehh...they can slot him in...the cap is skyrocketing the next 5 years, to over 300 million...17-18 will be equivalent to 12-13 now. It's like NBA players making almost $50 million a year now...where did that come from?? A rising cap... that's where. The money has to go somewhere and most often it goes disproportionately to the stars. Edited August 8, 2021 by Big Turk
Rc2catch
I’m a big supporter of Edmunds, but he’s not at the level to get that kinda contract yet. I have faith he’s going to explode into the elite category with an improved pass rush so I’d be ok overpaying some to lock him up now. But not at the highest paid at his position like Leonard

The money has to go somewhere and most often it goes disproportionately to the stars. I will say 2 things: 1) NBA comparison is crazy because they don’t have a true cap. You can basically spend whatever you want and just pay more into the pool. So where does 50 million come from - owners willing to overspend to make their team relevant. A team like Brooklyn with Durant is not staying under the CAP - they are basically willing to go way beyond the cap for a few years to try and win. 2.) We know in the NFL based upon the agreement that the Cap next year is only going to rise a few million and that is assuming all games go off and all fans are back. I am not convinced that will be the case come the fall. Then the 2023 CAP will be based upon the 2022 money - meaning the 2023 CAP is not skyrocketing - it will be 2024 when the CAP see the biggest jump. They can slot him in, but it just became harder and much less likely. The numbers for off ball LBs were going up - that was clear and everyone knew Darius was going to set a new standard - the fear was how high does it push the lesser players and that contract probably pushes guys like Edmunds - not Elite, but top 5-10 with multiple ProBowls - up 5 - 6 million on AAV over the next couple of seasons. For me - If it could of been done first - I would have done it at 12-13 and it would seem a bargain. Now I am waiting - not to see how he plays, but you need to get other players to slot into 13-14 AAV to get him back down to that range. 48 minutes ago, JGMcD2 said: Edmunds will get between $70-$80M over 4 years. I was thinking before this deal 4 year 48 - 50 million would have been my target. Sorry saw @NoSaint beat me to it. SCBills
No, not as of right now. Edmunds has all the potential in the world, but as of right now, he’s not as good as Darius Leonard. If he balls out this year… sure, offer him that contract, but not until we see him make impact plays regularly. 1

TC in St. Louis
Let's see how he does this year. He played hurt last year, and Star wasn't on the field at all. He's a superior athlete, and this year will establish his value.

Brand J
Right now, Edmunds is the second most impactful LB on this roster, despite being the most physically gifted. All we can hope is that the lights come on in year 3 and he becomes the force we need in the middle.

But I don't think we know much about how the younger players from the last two or three years can be. Last year's lack of an off-season was a major handicap for younger guys. Took away a lot of their chances to grow and develop. Last season was like none before and I believe we'll find a lot of guys league-wide making major "unexpected" leaps forward this year, particularly young ones. We traded up from #22 to #16 for Edmunds and then Leonard went at #36. The draft is a lottery and I would rather keep my picks (or trade down) to have as many tickets as possible. The Josh Allen trade-up has been the only successful one. We gave up draft capital for Zay Jones, Tremaine Edmunds, Cody Ford, and Dawson Knox and they are all either underachievers or busts.
Shaw66
I see all that you guys are seeing, but I am not sure that any of us is seeing what the coaches see. There was a thread a few weeks ago about a coaches' and scouts' poll, and a lot of them said Edmunds is a nightmare to plan for, because of his length and his range. The point is that the value that Edmunds brings to the team may be greater than what we see. We see a guy who is not a hitter, is close but isn't a natural cover guy, a guy who is around the ball but makes few impact plays. I suspect what the coaches see is a guy who makes the game easier for the defensive backs and the other linebackers. Whether that is worth $100 million is a different question.
BADOLBILZ
If you have been bickering against the narrative that Edmunds isn't playing up to expectations/potential.........or making excuses for why he hasn't........but still don't think he deserves $20M/yr for his age 24-28 seasons.........there's your sign that you have been wrong all along. This is the new market rate for a top, young veteran MLB. 1
Brianmoorman4jesus
I mean…that guy is a fringe top 20 player in the NFL. Edmunds might not be that much better then a guy we could take in round 2 next year. No. You don’t give him a deal like that. Milano is the best LB on the team. Edmunds needs to start playing faster and not over thinking or he’s going to be one of the guys that becomes a casualty of war cap wise.

I know Tre is young, but 2020 was year 3 for him. I see how his injury likely impacted his ability to take on blockers. The good with him are the splash plays. He makes some great ones. He is outstanding at scraping sideline to sideline. But on the bad side are his mistakes, of which there are too many. If he cleaned up his coverage and gap integrity issues, he’d probably be an All Pro. But those haven’t gotten better and I don’t think a full offseason in 2020 would’ve made a big difference. Still, things can click for players. Maybe it’ll be easier for him this season with him being fully healthy.
