Texans releasing JJ Watt

Process

I'm fine with him doing whatever he wants.

What I really was saying is that I'm like a girl waiting to get asked to the prom.  The longer he waits to ask, the more he's saying to me I'm not the one.   If the question is that close for him, I'm not happy.

(this has probably been said more than once in this 84 page thread)

JJ is probably waiting to hear what the official new salary cap is.  Kind of foolish for him to sign a deal now and then it turns out the NFL goes "LOL we were joking, cap's at $205mil and not the $175/$180mil you were speculating".

Well, I've been saying all along that I don't want him if money is driving him, but I what I've meant by that is I want him to come to the Bills for less than some other team is offering.   If as you say, it's possible for the cap to go that high, then he'd be foolish to sign now and leave a few million on the table just because he wanted to get it done.   If the Bills are offering $12 and the cap goes to $200, he can get another million or two or three out of the Bills.

Anyone remember the Tyson Clabo thread? Those were sad times.

Honestly, it’s probably for the best.  There’s a guy in the draft that is a better player than Watt is right now.

Who? And will he be there at 30?

I agree with you, Shaw. If he is looking for every last penny then more power to him but Buffalo is not the place for him. I think it's pretty well established now that the salary cap will fall somewhere between $180 - $185 million. It's not even going into the $190s, let alone the $200s.

Who cares? If the Bills aren't his automatic first choice, you're not interested? Do you think Buffalo was Diggs' first choice?

This is nothing like asking a girl out to the prom or whatever.

JJ Watt should want to die as a Buffalo Bill! Josh was born wanting to be a Bill even though he grew up a Tom Brady fan.

I'm glad the FO doesn't think this way or we would have like 5 players. The Bills aren't the only contenders and one of the contenders in on him is his childhood team. Why wouldn't that cause conflict? Conversely, I would question the decision making of a player who has extreme tunnel vision.

Yeah but there's no reason for teams to rush into it. It makes no difference if he signs now or he signs one day before free agency. For teams like us and the Packers and the Titans a $2 million difference is meaningful.

Unless I've missed something I haven't seen any team re-sign a player or pick up a 5th year option yet. The only moves I've seen so far are teams releasing players. That tells me teams are being extra cautious right now and no new player contracts will be inked until the NFL finalizes the cap number. Once that happens I bet Watt is signed somewhere within a couple days.

Yes and no on the teams. They need to get their other FA priorities in line plus get their draft board in order. Plus know how much $ they have to work with. The sooner the better from their standpoint. They need to be under the cap by 3/17 so other moves hinge on this one

Trey Hendrickson was a 3rd rounder. za'darius smith Was a 4th rounder. stephon tuitt Was a 2nd rounder. romeo okwara And Shaq Barrett weren’t drafted.

of course if the Bills sign Watt, I’d be extremely happy. But $10 million/ year at least plus for a guy with 9 sacks in 2 years who has major injury issues is a big scary. I’d like to think McDermott could find a young hungry guy in the draft who is on the rise or a FA who is trending up and doesn’t have the name recognition.

Make a list of the most attractive girls and just go down the list. Shooters shoot.

Bills not even listed in top 8 now...

not that this means anything but this is where money is...

Cleveland is the favorite, followed by Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay, according to Points Bet.

Tennessee isn’t even listed here and you take these guys seriously?

I’m not making a case for Watt one way or the other as there are perfectly valid reasons on both sides of the issue. I was legit asking about a DE at pick 30 who is as good as Watt is right now and thought you had a specific prospect in mind.

Per a source: At this point the front-runners appear to be actually the Browns and the Packers. So if a decision is made in the next   2-3 days, it will likely be between these 2. Sry can’t say more - though there can still be a last minute twist.

What source 🤔

It would be great if by the time Watt is ready to make a decision, everyone just passed. It’s been 3 weeks JJ, we’ve moved on without you....

Well, yes. JJ needs to understand he can wait as long as he wants to put his lightbulbs in his sockets, but he then should not be surprised if he gets zapped by a few of those. Similarly, Brandon should not put all his Beanes in one basket, as they may all jump out at the last moment, and he'd have a very sad Easter.

You guys do understand that the teams involved and Watt all have a better understanding of the situation than fans on a discussion board do, don’t you? I worry that some of you think that Watt and his guys aren’t talking to teams, or that Buffalo isn’t having meetings and discussions about guys other than Watt. In the grand scheme of things Watt taking a little bit longer than some people would like is not really that big of a deal. He’s not holding the team hostage, they are making plans with or without him. I can guarantee you no one is getting their feelings hurt because he is taking his time

I really hope that you’re not that worried about us. We’re fans on a message board. This is much bigger than any of us. It seems like the only person with hurt feelings is you...

No - these are the new odds updated yesterday.
Points Bet is online betting platform and partially owned by NBC. It is legit.
Obviously betting odds aren’t always right. But usually do have a pulse on what is going on.

There are people on here who understand betting odds, including a chap who makes his living in that industry

I am not one of them

But I thought that betting odds simply reflect trying to balance things out so the sites break even?   So it's sort of an "all of us must be smarter than one of us? thing?

I feel certain someone will set me straight if I'm wrong

So this article says Watt has narrowed things down.  Jeremy Fowler reports Bills are front runner.    Personally I think if you're going to pay $15 mil like reported there are better/younger options like a Y Ngakoue who are projected to get similar amount of money or cheaper amounts for players one peg down in talent like a L Williams.

The only risk with guys like that are, how many of actually will become FA on March 17th or will be re-signed prior by existing team.  Could end up with an empty bag by waiting.

think they fudged the article with saying the Bills are a front runner. Fowler never reported that

1.  I’m fine signing Watt, even with the injury and age risks.

2.  BUT...that being said...Watt is far from our most pressing need though on defense.  We were 6th in QB pressures last year and second fastest only to Pitt at getting to the QB.

3.  Beef on the interior DL is substantially more important right now.  I would rather spend the kind of money Watt is expected to get on some big beef in the middle of the DL.

Not a slight on Watt, I’d be excited if he was a Bill.  But I’m substantially more concerned about how we were frequently dominated in the trenches, especially right up the middle.

Just go get Leonard Williams, much cheaper and he’s still young. Paying 15-16 million for an aging veteran who at this point would be a rotational player is completely asinine. I saw him a few times last year and he definitely lost a couple steps. But then again it’s not our money and I trust in Beane

I've seen Leonard Williams associated with long term $20M per year quotes.

The issue I have is with the media recycling the same.. "Watt has now narrowed his search to four teams" story four times...

Couldnt they come up with a new angle ?

He’s not getting that lol. He’s got high hopes if he thinks he’s getting 20 million.  But Leonard is younger and his injury history isn’t as bad as Watt’s is. But again we’re gonna have to see what happens
