How many times have we seen highly touted and picked kickers absolutely ***** the bed early in their careers? Then again they could prob find a decent kicker on the open market if that happens. Sometimes teams have to take risks in order to improve. Like you said, we can probably find a decent kicker on the open market. Most likely not much worse Hausch, maybe even better. Gambling Bass’ upside is a no brainer considering Hausch is JAG at this point

A few decades ago, Buffalo drafted a promising place kicker. He had a terrible training camp and the Bills got rid of him. Gary Anderson went on to have a Hall of Fame career. I'm glad the Bills took a chance on the kid. Great post. The same thing happened 2 years ago with the Panthers. Drafted Butker. They put him on the practice squad where he was immediately poached by Kansas who had wanted to draft him. Now Butker who was considered to have lost the camp battle with Gano, is the highest points scorer in the league in 2019. Gano was cut this off-season having struggled to stay fit since they reupped him . At the time fans spoke with great wisdom about how Gano looked better, how he was a known quantity. Fans don't know squat. Panthers couldn't bring themselves to let him go even though the cap saving made more sense. It's looking a bad decision now. Bass will likely miss kicks this year. But if he can be the future for 10-15 years it will be worth it. Edited August 27, 2020 by Seoulofstone
Locomark
Well this is equivalent to the 3rd preseason game so I’m glad they made the call and gave Hauschka the chance to latch on elsewhere. Now please Bass, don’t be erratic. I don’t want to be excited for a 55 yarder again only to worry about a 40 yarder every week.

Ha, figures you'd be against this move. I didn't feel spoiled against the Browns last year, and if Hausch still had a decent leg we'd have been able to try a 54-yarder in a dome vs. Houston in the playoffs. He was an excellent kicker for the Bills and has had a great career, but in Buffalo you need a strong leg and the writing was on the wall. The fact that Bass was nearly 80% in college should ease people's minds. He's gonna be very good.

msw2112
This is a difficult one, but likely the right decision. Below is a summary of my thoughts and also a summary of what I have seen in this thread: 1. Hausch was a great member of the Bills in his 3 years with the team, on and off the field. 2. His play tailed off last season, particularly from long range, although he was clutch in the playoff game 3. He made a lot of money on his Bills contracts, and earned/deserved it, by modern NFL standards 4. Bass is far less expensive, saves the team cap money this year and next 5. Bass has the stronger leg, at this point in their careers (and perhaps stronger that Hausch's ever was) 6. This could come back to haunt the Bills, but risk yields reward. May cost the Bills some games, but also win them some others. 7. Releasing him now gives Hausch a better chance of hooking on with another team for the season Best of luck to Hausch and his family. 4

sullim4
4 minutes ago, Virgil said: This is going to cost us a win It could really go either way. Kickers can boom PATs and 65 yard field goals in practice, and then get the yips in a game time situation. Hauschka had is fair share of mental issues down the stretch so it's no given that he's any better, especially when you consider leg strength. Bass will get his chance and we'll see how it goes. It could end horribly and he could end up getting cut in week 4, or he could be a breakout. With kickers, you never know.
JESSEFEFFER
Hopefully Bass gets the chance to figure things out before needing to kick one that really matters. Almost any other position allows a young player to develop their skills. Not much tolerance for a kicker that costs his team wins.

jkeerie
All the extra points he missed in practice. Apparently the Bills intend to score more TD's this year and settle for fewer field goals. I think the cap savings likely played an additional role in the decision. Best of luck to Haush and his family. It's now the rookie's job to kick those extra points and long field goals when needed. A bit surprised about Edwards. I thought the reports on him in camp were good.
