Steve Billieve
This is super smart imo. Mahomes gets money NOW. KC saves cap latter. When it comes to investing large sums time is the biggest factor for success. I'm not sure how they are allowed to structure the bonuses but what is the expected value of Mahomes bonus for the final year of his contract? Lets say the bonus is 10 mil for that final contract year, the expected value has to be at least 15 mil, and maybe 20 mil. It's so rare to have a player you can offer this sort of deal to. Mahomes gets what, $400-500million..so not too shabby, Chiefs get 10-years to strategically add pieces around the best qb in the game, and will have a bargain during the second half of his contract allowing them to bring in some top free agents. Sure Mahommes could sign two smaller length deals and end up with more cash, but how much money does he really need (don't forget endorsements outside of his paycheck)

That was before Sports effectively stopped and people stopped wanting to go with 75K of their favorite strangers in a stadium for 4 hours. So how is ESPN doing financially lately? QBs MIGHT be topping $75 million in 10 years or might be getting a fraction of that. This concept that football will never drop in popularity is historically and hopelessly naive. The risk of a 10 year deal is unbelievably risky right now. Lol bro, if things turn out that people aren’t watching football and the NFL isn’t making money 5 years from now, a QB contract is going to be the last worry on an owners’ mind. 46 minutes ago, Mr. WEO said: Wow! The endless era of every year NFL players getting more every inexorably could end in a heartbeat. The Sports Networks are financialy strapped right now and probably going to get worse, who in their right mind is going to want to shell out XYZ$ for a fooball ticket with 75K other people with COVID going around. This and the fact the avg. career of an NFL QB is 4.4 yrs. Luckily it was "only" a dislocated knee cap he suffered. machine gun kelly
It was a smart move as they spread out the bonus, etc. over 10 years. They have serious as do the other 31 teams of contracts during the economic impact of the pandemic. They locked up their guy, he has $ for a long time, and they spread out things for an extended period of time. It’s genius.

Saint Doug
This is an odd signing. QBs of his caliber almost never hit free agency. He would have made the money no matter what. So why sign for a big chunk of time when you know future contracts are all but guaranteed? People may say “well, this is guaranteed”, but we know no contract is guaranteed in the NFL. As for guaranteed money and signing bonus, these go up every year. It’s highly likely that if you added up signing bonuses and guaranteed money for 2 5-year contracts, one being 5 years in the future, he would’ve made more with 2 separate contract. I guess, using that logic, the Chiefs got the best deal. Edited July 6, 2020 by Saint Doug

CEN-CAL17
I’m not wish any harm on Mahomes, love watching him play, he’s the face of the NFL for the near future and makes the league better.... But you put this kind of length on a deal, what happens if a Alex Smith situation happens or has a season ending injury that he never recovers fully? Do the Chiefs have an out? Or are they tied to him through 2032?

Hey Bill, it looks like they can get out of it in a few years, but They are spreading out the hit over a long time, and after the pandemic, the cap will go up. Then as far as Allen, he is not Mahomes who went 4 years, and Allen as a 1 st round pick the Bills can extend to a 5th year So they have three years to make sure. If they still weren’t sure could tag him for another two years. They are so safe on him to make sure he is the guy. I think he is the guy, but at least they have breathing room, and if he is the stud we hope, he’ll get paid and the other studs like White will already be extended. It’s a great business decision and strategy.

I agree, I think Bills fans would be fine with Allen taking all the cash he wants, if we become a consistent contender. You can’t assume how the fans would react based on guys like Mario Williams. The drought years were brutal, and everyone was looking for scapegoats. You also had people like me who didn’t understand why teams who weren’t contenders, would pay big time bucks for some of those guys. Many of our highly compensated players were poor attempts to keep the franchise relevant, while not investing in the proper areas. The players themselves happened to take the blame for being unable to lift the team above being bottom feeders.
