junior
Can someone please explain this in simple terms/what this indicates? Is the main value of this that we don't have him on the books for 2021-22? Why not just cut him?
njbuff
The Bills give him a chance to show he isn't a total bust. That is why they didn't outright cut him. I am not saying it's right, it's just what they are thinking.
aristocrat
Looks like he was supposed to get 5.6 mil in cash next year with a 6.4 mil cap hit. i'm not a cap guy but if he took a 1.6 mil pay cut i'd say his cap hit has gone down 1.6 mil? opening up space?

Basically turned his contract into a 1 year prove it deal. Benefits the team and gives Kroft a chance to get paid next offseason. Never hurts to have experienced players on the team. To me it says Lee Smith could be the one cut or maybe they don’t think as highly of Sweeney as we do or Beane let on.

1st Ammendment NoMas
This probably means they are out of the Hooper/Henry sweepstakes. Maybe they give Jimmy Graham a shot but I don't think they are going to overspend on the position. Better WR's may be of higher importance now.
Dablitzkrieg
Apparently the last year was restructured. If they cut him after this year I think, we get a compensatory pick ?
MAJBobby
Change your contract And take a pay cut or you are getting cut. He changed his contract. Edited March 12, 2020 by MAJBobby 5

Then the onus goes back to Beane to determine his worth.
Alphadawg7
I like this move...he either delivers a reason to keep him this year, or he is done and off the books right after. Kroft benefits getting guaranteed money with his injury history. Win Win here. Another great move by Beane. Honestly, odds are he will be gone by 2021 anyway, Knox is our future most likely assuming he shows improvement this year of course.
HOUSE
Its impossible to judge Kroft in Buffalo after the injuries. Brandon Beane is not stupid if he truly sucks like many here believe he would have been waived. Give it some more time....Its not your money anyway.. I am glad they worked something out. 5
gonzo1105
Basically the Bills guaranteed his contract this year of 3.6 million out of the paycut. Got rid of the 3rd year so basically the Bills have him more guaranteed money probably locking him in from 2020 but have the flexibility to get out from under his contract

billsfan89
It is basically going to cost the Bills 600k to see what he has in camp? Compared to a 1.5 million dead cap hit if they just cut him? Seems fair, I think they can bring in another vet to complete with him on a one year deal.

To be fair, this is the kind of things players love. Want to attract more/better free agents this is one of the ways to do it. It’s a respectful kind of move. It does not hinder the team from making any moves or getting better or acquiring talent at any position. Kroft has one good season under his belt from his Cincinnati days. Which was a pretty decent season. I don’t think buffalo year one is a fair assessment to judge him on. Injuries are a concern and problem for him, good thing we have quite a few tight ends on the team.

Don Otreply
Good! Beane strikes again. To those that haven’t figured it out yet, ya don’t cut players until you have inked their replacement, when yo do that you lose leverage when negotiating the replacement, unless of course it’s Kelvin Benjamin... ? then ya just cut his azs. Go Bills!!!

I’d have probably just cut him, but they like him I guess.

Go Bills!!! Dunno about that in this case. You just made it very difficult to cut him this season if we do find an upgrade. This is both sides agreeing to give it one more season to see if it works out. My real issue is that it makes upgrading the position very difficult unless we move in from Lee Smith. In that case our new TE better be a good in line blocker. The initial contract they gave Kroft was terrible. If we’re going to keep him this season at least it’ll be for less money. BringBackOrton
The Star Lotulelei fans would say this is a deal that is a win for both sides, and he’s only taking a paycut because of how awesome of a job McBeane think he’s doing.

TC in St. Louis
There was a reason they signed him last year. He's a good athlete and will be productive when he's 100% healthy. They'll put in some plays to leverage his strengths. Anybody remember the touchdown he scored last year? Won a game for us. Saved some bucks. He was an 8 million dollar guy. Now he's half that.

If you cut him you get a 1.6 mil dead cap hit but then you have to find a replacement who can actually play tight end. Evidently that's hard to do.?
