What If Rex Never Was Hired & Schwartz was The HC ?

Recommended Posts

I know the Bills are in a good place now with the Mc Bean era firmly in place, the play off drought is over & i see good things in the future under this new regime but while reading today on Rumblings i saw a What If post about the coaching staff prior to this one that the Pegula's have now .

The post was about how after Marrone stiffed the Bills & the Bills had this kick butt D in place the coach of the unit was Jim Schwartz which had head coaching experience & has now put a Super Bowl ring on his finger . I for one was hoping they would keep him for the continuity part of him staying & through reading that article was wondering what you all thought about that ?

I know the past is the past & i am glad in the direction that the Bills are taking but do you think if the Pegula's would have put Schwartz in the HC ing position it would have been better or worse than Rex ?

Jim Schwartz was (and still is) a great coordinator.  That doesn't necessarily translate into success as a head coach.  Supposedly, when he was HC for the Lions, he had issues with player discipline.

Schwartz would have likely been a better and more successful HC then Rex (with Buffalo).  With that being said, I'm happy with McD thus far and so the "what ifs?" don't really matter too much because at the moment it would appear as though we have a quality HC

Better or worse? Not sure it could be worse especially with Rex changing a defense hence dumping players for a defense which was already working.

Not sure about better though.  Jim Schwartz did not do such a good job in Detroit and not sure how he would have learned his lessons and changed so quick and it is not likely IMO we would have reached playoffs in a year three Jim Schwartz reign.

I think Schwartz as HC with Whaley as GM would have had this team a QB away from being a powerhouse.  That said, as much as I think Whaley was a good GM, I don't think he had the chops to get that QB.  We'll never know.  But I can say with certainty that the Bills would have been better with Schwartz/Whaley than with the Ryan circus the Pegulas invited into Buffalo.

That's in the past, though.  We have a better GM; that is certain.  We'll see how the coaching staff is, as well as the QB situation.  But, overall, the team is a lot less talented than it was back then.  I trust the process and feel good about where we are and where we're going.

Respectfully disagree , providing he brought a decent OC in . All that D needed was a top 16 offense and we get a WIld Card in there somewhere.

i do agree he is not a head coach( which is an administrative position , often) but a heck of a DC

It would of, could of, should of......

......but it's not as ridiculous as the antiquated notion of this thread.

Schwartz as head coach is what should have happened. Him and Whaley should have been given the following season if improvement continued re new their contracts, if it wasn't the direction you wanted start fresh. This would have potentially saved time in starting fresh but instead we got a second season of rex

Schwartz in my opinion deserved a shot even for just one season

However this is all in the past and we seem to have hired the right guys

Who is the GM?

and who would have been his OC.

Also, TT came to the BIlls primarily due to the Rex connection.  We may never have had Tyrod in the building.

Some do not even read tweets unless quoted on wall and even in this case I need to highlight it to read it since it is in all blue.

I wonder if it was pasted on Packers board would it be green?

Every year the web based pundits would have been saying the Bills will go 2-14.

And the Kool Aid Krowd at OBD would have been predicting 19-0.

The reality?  We would still have been 7-9, 8-8, or 9-7.

I'm thankful for the Ryans for ushering in the McBeane era.

I think Gym Shorts is a great DC. But we have seen plenty of coordinators (OC and DC) that excel in that role but not HC. (Norv Turner, Wade Phillips, Gregg Williams etc)

McDermott has the temperment, mentality and brains to be a very good HC. He did not lose the team after the horrible 2-3 game stretch last year. Guys stayed motivated, didn't pipe out on social media and the team circled the wagons. Good signs from a rookie HC keeping control and focus on the team.

Not sure Jim S could have done that.

I love Schwartz as a DC but think he won't be a great HC.

I think he'd have been better than Rex, particularly on defense, but not actually very good. And I have hopes that maybe the current group really will be very good down the road. So I think we're better off having suffered through the Rex era.

What if they extended Marrone?

Would have saved $26m well $21m or so anyway ;)

Thankfully the Wrex era ended quickly and the Pegs fixed the mess they made.

If Schwartz was HC

#1 - you start with and keep that Top 5 Defense intact

#2 - you don't waste draft picks and salary cap money converting to a 3-4

#3 - we would have been able to concentrate on improving the Offense

#4 - for that team, hiring rex was a DISASTER which I put the blame on Russ Brandon who prioritized selling tickets and sponsorships (which rex provided)

#5 - not convinced whaley would have gotten a franchise QB

CONCLUSION:  Bills would have enjoyed enough success that BOTH Schwartz and Whaley would still be here today.

We'd have been better in 2015 and 2016.... I think we'd probably have made the dance in 2015 if we had been able to find someone to just be competent (we wouldn't have even needed Tyrod... less than Tyrod would have done) at QB.  But I don't think it was a championship window and we might have gone something like 10-6, 8-8 and then fallen off a bit in 2017 when the roster started to churn (Mario gone, Kyle ageing, who knows with Dareus).  I feel like this current regime gives us a chance to be set up for the long term.... ultimately it will come down to whether their gamble on Josh Allen works out or not.

They should have hired Schwartz, but suffering through Wrecks was worth it because McDermott is a special coach who is doing things the right way with the right system and the players love him. I don think this would have happened under Schwartz.

He is 29-52 as a HC. Maybe that defense could have carried him for a season before the inevitable drop. He is a coordinator not a HC.

The guy asked his players to carry him off the field when the Bills beat the Lions, he is a goofball not a leader of men.

It's hard to say, but I believe Schwartz would have been more successful than Rex. The defenses would have been sick. It would be similar to his run in Detroit. With Schwartz as coach it's hard to say whether Tyrod would have ever been here though. Tyrod was a Rex guy. Incognito may have never been here either because Rex went after him. Schwartz would have surely been a better hire than Rex, but Whaley still would have been his GM. No telling where we would be right now.
