You’re making some silly assumptions.

CoffeeDrip
I think this is awesome. Dude obviously lives and breathes football. He is rehabbing injury and it’s the off-season - what is he supposed to be doing to get ready for next season right now? Additionally, Von has been in the league a long time. He knows lots of people outside of the Bills - no harm in him picking their brains as well as Beane’s, which he’s reported to have already been doing. He's a future hall of famer and who hasn't thought of life after their job a few years before you retire? I see nothing wrong with this imo. So I did read the article. I didn't see anywhere that it stated Miller asked to work with the Bills but they declined or that the Bills asked Miller to work with them and he declined. Going on his own certainly is a better way to network with more people from different perspectives and "Coaching trees" Yes Florio thinks it's odd, can't say I disagree or agree wit him, it's just his take and wrote a column about it. He was drafted by Elway at Denver, for all we know, Elway may have told him at one time that this exactly what he had done years back maybe while still playing. Social media has changed the world in that everyone knows what everyone else is doing all the time if you're somewhat famous. 30 years ago, Elway could have done the same and no one would have even noticed. Or at least not maybe the 5 people covering the combine back then. He also has the status that allows him to do this whereas many who may want to can't. As Florio pointed out, it does sound a bit like Miller want's to follow the Elway route and become a GM without working his way up the latter, doing something like this, would help him there.

Not sure why this would bother anyone, it is not like its going to set his rehab back or anything. It is the offseason, nothing wrong with him looking down the road and taking opportunities to further his aspirations post career. In fact, I thought this was pretty cool and good for him. 1

How would you handle a very high priced free agent who was brought on the team to lead us on defense in playoffs but could not stay healthy enough to make the playoffs? Then due to cap crunch due to that contract I needed to use practice squad call ups until those players were ineligible and then I needed to sign previous players who were let go to finish the season since that was all we could afford? All the while this new high priced free agent was trying to bring in players we could not afford without offering a cent reduction on his contract? Then he go stirs up the water, water which is very muddy and perfect for mud fights, pretending to be a GM?

seattlebillsfan
This could be good. Von plays as hard and well as he can, anchors a Super Bowl championship defense, and then retires early, saving the Bills cap space in return for an apprenticeship in the GM’s office. Miller is smart and would be a good GM. Kellen Winslow type. Edited March 5, 2023 by seattlebillsfan
Ridgewaycynic2013
Shadowing Beane at the combine is a good start, but Miller needs a few more mentors: Like Dave Gettleman, haranguing players over how many snacks they're taking. If you watch those pennies, the dollars saved will add up. Like Bill O'Brien, why settle for just one role. Roll over the HC, and seize the power. POWER. POWER! Like Buddy Nix, learn the skills to power napping, and being 'punk'd' by two bit radio personalities. Like Jerry Jones: "I'm not only the GM...I'm the owner!" 1

The signing was a bust? LOL I guess signing Tre White to that extension was also a bust since he tore his ACL as well? Even if he never plays another snap for the Bills, how they treat him certainly does matter. Especially with other players around the league that may consider Buffalo a destination. He played on his 3rd team in 2 seasons in 2022. He's hardly concerned with organizational loyalty..... Players will go where it best suits them financially. The Bills don't need to sweat Miller's happiness---he's doing pretty well there. If "he never plays another snap" for them, he will have gotten 51 million for the cup of coffee he had in Buffalo.
ColoradoBills
It doesn't bug me in the least that Von goes to the combine and plays GM in training. What I don't want is him pretending he is the Bills Junior GM or trying to influence any decisions at OBD. He can speak his piece in private to McDermott and Beane but I didn't care for the whole OBJ thing done in public. That's just my opinion.

Oh. Since Elway has more super bowl wins as GM than all Bill's GM's combined, I thought he had an ok career. Partly because I keep reading that Bills fans are putting undreasonable expectations on Beane to win. (Also, the Bronco's post Elway don't look so great).
