Leslie Frazier "taking a year off from coaching" per Bills PR

well, i expect two things.

1, i expect the new DC to be essentially an avatar of McD.  im thinking he sees how his former mentor and current despised rival Reid in KC has an avatar of himself but controls the O, and if you can't beat em join em.

2  I expect the D to be much more dynamic and multiple.  it might not be as good as last year given that i expect to lose some talent, but i think we will see more meaning changes on an opponent to opponent basis.

Of course McDermott wanted Leslie to stay. McDermott watches the film and understands what he is seeing. He knows how much of the blame really belongs with Leslie Frazier and it is not a ton.

If they wanted Frazier back , they would have tendered a contract extension a while back....and if they did, Leslie could of still said he needs to take a year off....but they did not....so there's that.

100% believe this was Leslie's decision.

We'll, LOL, OK.

Maybe it should've been McD's decision.

Then going for Al Holcomb, again, from Carolina, and their marvelous defense under him.  LOL

It's becoming clear that McD's DCs are little more than a face.

I think this did happen a little while ago (at least as in a week or two).

But did Sean get head coaching offers after 2013?

Point is McD benefited from Newton’s MVP season and the bright spotlight of the Super Bowl, which is how things work of course.

At the time, teams could block coordinators from interviewing while they were still in the playoffs.

Since hiring teams wanted to get their staff settled, especially for HC, that meant the number of coordinators from Superbowl teams hired as HC was limited.

Or they offered one back then and he said no and they only announced it now.

This is a crucial year for McD. Let him call the plays.

This may be a good thing. Maybe he will really want to prove something.

Did they announce having given a contract offer? Nope

I listened to beane's presser today and am and have been listening to WGR. Have not even heard a hint of this yet. McD will be on soon.

This is all very strange.   It is extremely rare for a DC or OC to request from management to take a year off, that just doesn't make sense.

I don't believe he was forced out either, he wouldn't just take a year off while being forced out, he'd want to coach elsewhere and there would be plenty of suitors.

My suspicions are that there were disagreements between the two and in the process Frazier requested a year off understanding that this was the end of his days as DC.

I am basing it on the fact that even the staffing changes we know were decided weeks ago were only formally announced today. And I did think Beane sounded like this had been a process. Didn't suddenly happen this weekend.

They didn’t though. They scored 14 points in the first Q and 13 the rest of the way.

The game was winnable if the offense showed up.

The whole team did not show up.  But the defense was manhandled on the first two drives.  That set the tempo.  Cinci had receivers wide open all over the field.  And they ran the ball at will up the middle.  You could tell right away we were not ready to compete against the Bengals.  That game and to a lesser degree, the Miami game the week before (even though we won) was a total failure by the organization.  They need to own it, and do WHATEVER it takes to be a better overall team in all facets next season.  There is nothing we can not improve on from our play in the 2022 season.  It is not so much our record.  Because we will have a very difficult schedule.  But more are we just nasty to play against.  And can we impose our will on our opponents on offense defense and special teams whenever we need to?

And lets not leave out coaching.  It has to be much better against the best teams, especially come playoff time.  If McDermott and crew can not show that this season.  Time for a change after 2023.

A demotion to secondary coach or the like very well could’ve been on the table. I would’ve been surprised if the Bills went into 2023 with Leslie Frazier as DC, so this news is not at all surprising to me, however it went down.

No, see tweet above with the direct quote from Beane:

Beane said “if Frazier wasn’t taking a step back, he would be the team’s defensive coordinator.”

He didn't say "back with the team", he said "defensive coordinator"

I just don't see them going after the Frank Clarks (13.5 sacks in 17 postseason games) of the world. I hate to say it, but crazy d-linemen often do bring a sharper edge to big games than most. Just think of Leon Lett and Charles Haley

Yep. In general this defense is missing a tone setter. The closest we've had is Jordan Poyer and as far as tone setters go that's not much. Milano and Edmunds are rangy but players aren't scared of them. Von is pretty laid back and a technician, not a brute. Rousseau is a gentle giant. On offense Allen and Diggs are tone setters. On defense we're missing someone that opposing players are afraid to go near.

This is off topic but I've fallen in love with Jack Campbell as a 2nd round target. It's not about filling the hole we have at LB, it's about finding a tone setter. On film I see him stopping guys dead in their tracks and letting them hear about it. Give me that mean streak along with a more aggressive defensive philosophy. That's what championship defenses are made of.

Translation:

Bills:  "Leslie, this is how it's going to be moving forward and you need to adapt.  We respect your service to the team

Leslie: "I'm not comfortable adapting and will take a year off"

Subtle way of elbowing someone out the door and protecting the integrity of a good dude who served the team with honor

Wasn’t Beane asked point blank if Leslie wasn’t stepping away would he be back as DC? And then Beane confirmed? I wouldn’t expect for that to go any other way. They can tell the media what they want, but the only people who know the entire truth are those who were in on the meeting (Beane/Frazier/McD/Pegula). You can take it at face value, that’s fine, but I wouldn’t accept it as 100% truth.

Nothing in any part of this announcement should be considered transparent truth. It's all Management-Speak, and showing other candidates that the Bills Org doesnt throw coaches under the bus on their way out.

Where have you been for the last few years. There's been plenty of reports on it. What a tuel indeed.

Plenty of reports the team is broken? What? What does that even mean? They don't have a will to win? They've given up? Nonsense.

I'm sorry, but I want someone who is at the table to tell me!

I will give you the bengals game. That seemed like a very broken team that was just finished this year.

No, they gave up 16 points. 15 points were the result of offensive turnovers and bad ST play.

15 points, is that all?  (rummage, rummage):

3 points after interception/49 yd return gave Mia the ball on the Buffalo 48.  Gained 18 yds (including 13 yds on 4th and '8)

3 points after 50 yd return of 47 yd punt to Buffalo 27.  Gained 8 yds (but special teams play doesn't matter, I read it here)

6 points after interception/29 yd return gave MIA the ball on the Buffalo 18

7 points by MIA Defense after strip sack on 13 yd line/fumble recover TD

I make that 19 points as a result of offensive turnovers and bad ST, or maybe I just don't understand how you're looking at it?

The thing is, even on those series where points resulted from offensive or ST miscues - the D gave up plays like a conversion on 4th and 8.

And another scoring drive, not resulting from Buf offensive turnovers, was sustained by a 19 yd pass to Tyreek Hill on 3rd and 19.

So it can't be said our D played well against the Dolphins.

Why would he request a year off, if he wanted to move on?  No need, his contract is up.

He is no longer under contract this offseason.  Can leave and do whatever he wants.  If another team wanted him and he wanted out before the contract was up, they would have let him go to pursue other things.

Where does this thing about Frazier's contract being up keep coming from?

I thought multiple press guys covering the Bills had said it is not true.

We did not “hold” the Bengals to 13 the rest of the day. There was nothing to indicate that Burrow would not be putting up 17-30+ in the second half if they needed to and were not trying to burn the clock. Bengals drove the ball down the field every time they wanted to outside of a single possession. If they were not so successful mercifully killing the clock in the fourth they would have scored more points.

Tweet from JW in January

Couple thoughts:

1) The tweet could be technically true that Frazier's contract had not expired as of Jan 26th, and that it expired today Feb 28th

2) JW could be wrong

3) Other reports that his contract expired could be wrong

They’ll promote someone internally and it’ll be the same bend but don’t break, vanilla defense.

This is McDermott’s defense, he just needs a straw man to run it.

I’m not being defeatist, that’s just what it is.

100% spot on. The only thing that changes is McD doesn't have Fraizer as his fall guy.
