Benford to safety?

Yes please. Benford's RAS score was near perfect for safety, and we saw how good his athleticism looked at CB. Benford could be nice in the Poyer role in 2023. I would like the Bills to make a major youth movement at certain positions it will need to happen and happen fast. Hyde has one more year, but if I'm the Bills I'm finding another small school diamond who can be this years Benford, and pair them come 2024. PS - I'm writing this assuming Hamlin is not given medical clearance to return or decides to retire. We don't know the long-term prognosis on Hamlin returning to the field for 2023, or beyond. I do love Hamlin and his fearlessness when attmpting a tackle.

Hamlin will be back. Bet that.

I was clamoring for him to get time at Safety half the season. Even with with only a week of reps, he couldn't have been as bad as Jaquon Johnson. I think he'll make a very good Safety with a full offseason to prep.

I was clamoring for it on the day they drafted him!  On draft day, Beane said it would be easier to start him at CB and move him to safety. They needed to do this in camp, IMO.

With all respect to Hamlin, he won’t make our team better.

I had a couple of thoughts/questions on Hamlin. 1. Will he be allowed back to play? Its seems very risky for him to play football ever again after that freaky injury and near death experience and I wonder if the Bills or any team would want that risk.  2. Hamlin seemed like a decent talent but nothing special before his injury. Oddly Just before he got hurt, I was frustrated he got burned by the Bengals pass attack in that game. I went back and looked at his stats, they are very ordinary. So his impact on the team wasnt huge and I guess if he didnt play again, it wouldnt matter that much? Or is that too harsh a conclusion on such a small sample size.

Lotta smoke about him becoming the SS next year and I’d love it. McDermott also loves when Safeties have played CB or know the position well. Helps with spacing and disguising coverage.

As long as we’re running McDermott’s defense and he’s calling the shots next year, I’m nearly certain Benford will at least get a crack at it.

His tackling at the CB position was awesome. My only concern is pursuit angles from SS. There could be some learning moments in the early season.

Yes!  I can totally see it.  We're pretty set at corner if Tre gets back to form - Elam on the other side, Johnson in the slot.  Benford is talented, a real late-round find & has the physicality to play safety.

Then, we can let Poyer walk (hate to say that, as he's one of my faves, but it's the smart business move), and not have to expend draft capital to fill that void.

I agree. Damar was a nice short-term replacement for Micah but he's not a starter. I think Benford would make a great strong safety. Wasn't thrilled with the idea of Tre transitioning to S. Micah will be ready to go by September.

Honestly I'd be a little surprised if it's not at least tried. B-)

It makes some sense assuming Buffalo thinks they have starters on the roster at CB - namely Kaiir Elam Tre White and Johnson.  It's pretty clear that when both Hyde and Poyer are on the field the Bills get elite play out of their safeties.  It's just as clear that when one of them is out, the Bills get inadequate play out of all their backup players at safety.  If the Bills think they can get starter quality play out of Benford at safety, it reduces the urgency of drafting a replacement for Poyer should it be impractical to re-sign him.  If the Bills do re-sign Poyer, Benford would still give quality depth and avoid the drop-off in play they had this year.  They have a better record of finding quality CBs in the draft than safeties.

Yeah I don't think Benford is fast enough where you could play him in man coverage at corner more than part time so I'm all for the idea. He has shown good tackling fundamentals so I'm optimistic this could be a good move. I also expect a safety drafted somewhere as this is supposed to be a pretty good class.

This is just proof that Beane and McDermott read the stadium wall, guys here were way ahead of the curve on this one, 😁👍

Now maybe they will get the O-line taken care of too, 🤞

He's got similar size to Poyer. Is considered a ballhawk and touted for his physicality.

Would make a lot of sense.

comes down to Hamlin, Marlowe or Benford and I will take Benford with a training camp at the position and year in the secondary under his belt, plus saves money under the salary cap...no drafted rookie is going to start for the Bills if they can help it.

I wouldn’t bet it (partly because I don’t gamble), but if he does return it would not completely shock me. Maybe we’ll hear more in the coming months to shed some light on that possibility.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go sign up for medical school.

There's the possibility that at this point we don't have any Safeties on our roster.

Poyer likely gets more than we can afford to pay elsewhere. Though his injury filled season may lower his value on the market.

Marlowe and Johnson are free agents

Hyde and Hamlin may never play again because of medical conditions

Neal was used at Safety before being moved to CB. He could be a candidate to move back.

Hyde was possibly ready to be back for tomorrow's game if the Bills made it.  Another 6 months (to training camp) and he should definitely be good to go, barring any unforeseen complications/events.

It's possible Hyde will be back and I hope he is, but after having Vertebra fused in his neck, or whatever they did, I wouldn't go into the season expecting him to be the player he was, if he plays at all.

McDermott said it was a consideration in his end-of-season presser on Monday.

I didn't think it was a definite PLAN . He played well when he got an opportunity so I wonder if they leave him at CB to develop.
