Go BOLD - 2022 NFL Bold Predictions

GunnerBill

Recommended Posts

Regular readers will recall I like to do this thread about this time every year, as we enter camp, let's have some BOLD predictions for 2022. I always do eight in total, 4 NFL wide and 4 Bills specific. My best year I nailed 5 of the 8. Last year I am going to give myself 1 and a half - I correctly predicted Carson Wentz would lose his job as the Colts Quarterback (which he might not have done during the season but they traded him as soon as possible thereafter) and I had Matt Milano to go to the pro-bowl and garner all pro votes. Well he did not go to the pro-bowl but he did garner 1 vote for AP all pro.

So here we go for 2022:

NFL wide

  • The Cincinnati Bengals will MISS the playoffs
  • The New England Patriots will earn a top 5 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft
  • Christian Watson will have more yards and more touchdowns than Davante Adams
  • Justin Herbert will win the MVP but the Chargers will be 1 and done in the playoffs

Bills specific

  • Kaiir Elam to equal Jairus Byrd's team rookie interception record with 9
  • James Cook to lead Bills running backs in combined touchdowns (rushing and receiving)
  • Dawson Knox to be voted as an all-pro (at least 2nd team all pro honours)
  • The Buffalo Bills to lead the league in sacks

There are mine, flame away and add your own!

I'll post my own in a moment, but I just wanted to say that this is quite the bold prediction, indeed! I like it.

Side tangent: It was so weird that Byrd was consistently an All-Pro caliber player for the Bills, and then once he left, he just sort of quietly faded away, never again recording more than 2 INTs or 1 FF in any given season. Out of the league by the time he was 31. So strange. Were there some serious injury troubles that I'm not remembering?

It goes to show that scheme fit and surrounding talent are often key to a player's success.

Oh f*ck here we go again!

So here we go for 2022:

NFL wide

Colts miss the playoffs at 8-9 and the Jags win the AFC South at 9-8 thanks to TLAW improving big time and Pederson

NY Giants make the wildcard as Daboll organizes the team to maximize the players in their best positions and talent

Cardinals miss playoffs completely at 7-10 as their lack of defense especially in secondary and Hopkins out sinks their season

Derek Carr wins MVP as Raiders take division, but lose to Chargers in first round

Seahawks finish with the worst record in football leading to Carroll & Schneider being forced out despite first overall pick

Vikings win NFC North as Cousins has a great year and new coach maximizes their talent. They lose in NFC title to Bucs

Bills specific

Dane Jackson ends up winning #2 spot and holds it all year

Crowder goes over a 1000 yards and leads the team in receptions

Rosseasu helps double digits sacks and finishes ahead of Miller whose presence opens up his sack ability

Buffalo goes 15-2 and runs the table to win the SB. Allen wins SB MVP as they stomp the Bucs 31-14

NFL wide

- Baltimore will win the AFC North

- Las Vegas will win the AFC West

- The Colts will win the AFC South

- The Patriots will not make the playoffs

- Three AFC West teams will make the playoffs

- Kyler Murray will win league MVP
- Saquon Barkley will have over 2000 yards from scrimmage

- Tyreek Hill will get frustrated in Miami and become a headache for the Dolphins

- Ryan Tannehill will have some bad games, leading to calls for Malik Willis, who will play meaningful snaps this year

- Tom Brady will lead the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory and will retire after the season, going out on top and causing us all to vomit all over the living room one last time.

Bills specific

- The Bills will start the season 3-3, but will go 9-2 the rest of the way, finishing at 12-5 and winning the AFC East

- Ed Oliver will have a career season and earn his first Pro Bowl trip

- Gabriel Davis will silence all doubters, posting over 1,000 receiving yards and leading the team in touchdown receptions

- Jamison Crowder will spend the majority of the year as the starting slot receiver, but will cede more and more snaps to Khalil Shakir as the season wears on

- Tavon Austin will make the roster and contribute meaningfully on offense and special teams

- Terrel Bernard will have a bigger than expected impact on defense

- Similar to last year, Von Miller will record "just" 9 regular season sacks, but will make a serious impact in the playoffs

- The Bills will lose a playoff game that they should win, leading to an offseason of heated "should we fire McDermott?!" debate

I like this thread.

In 2020 I was 4-0.  In 2021 I was only 2-4, but one of the four (Knox to catch at least 50 passes) was missed by ONE catch (regular season).

For 2022:

NFL-Wide:

  • 49ers miss the playoffs
  • Cardinals miss the playoffs
  • Giants finish last in NFC East
  • Titans miss the playoffs

Bills-Specific:

  • Bills punt a maximum of 45 times
  • Singletary rushes for 1000
  • Rousseau 10 sacks
  • Bills win minimum 14 games

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will be the 7th seed in the AFC, and loose in the 1st round.

Josh Allen will set the all time passing yards mark for a season.

James Cook will rush for 1100 yards.

Von Miller and Greg Rousseau wil tie for the league lead in sacks.

Brady and the Bucs will miss the playoffs, Brady will retire, then Unretire the next day and convenience Gronk to come back with him.

Edit: Bass will kick a 70 yard field goal with the wind at his back at Highmark in December.

I don't think any of the NFL wide ones are all that bold... maybe the Titans... I think they are a possible wildcard team but could certainly see them missing it. The Giants roster sucks, the Cardinals are old, and the 49ers don't seem to have a Quarterback.

The Bills ones are bolder.

NFL Wide:

  • Jets and Pats Both finish 6-11 tied for last
  • The Iggles win the NEC east
  • Detroit has a winning record
  • Falcons have the #1 pick in the draft 2023

Bills Points:

  • 14-3 #1 seed in the AFC and make the Superbowl
  • Allen misses 2 starts and Keenum is 2-0 in those games
  • Singletary has 1100+ yards rushing
  • We have 3 no punt games

- Pitt will win the AFC North

- Vikings will win the NFC North

- Panthers win the NFC South

- Detroit will finish as a top 10 offense (but still lose a lot of games thanks to a bottom third defense)

- Trevor Lawerence will still struggle and bust rumblings will start coming about

Bills Specific

- Gabriel Davis will lead the Bills in receiving yards and TDs

- Devin Singletary will rush for 1200+ yards

- Bills will win 14+ games

- Bills will lead the league in sacks

- We will punt less than 50 times during the regular season

I dunno, I'm taking three teams who made the playoffs a season ago and dropping them out.  The Giants one isn't so bold now that I think about it.

I was wondering when this thread was going to come around!

League:

Chiefs miss the playoffs.

Sammy Watkins has a career year in Green Bay.

Colts take the AFCS.

Raiders take the AFCW.

Division:

Patriots* finish third in the AFCE.

Wilson is benched for a spell.

Tyreek Hill has several sideline tantrums.

Blake Bortles takes over at QB by mid-season for the Fish.

Bills:

Crowder has a career year.

Bills sweep the Pats* and Jets, but split with the Dolphins.

Bills once again carry seven WRs with Austin making the 53.

Bills carry ten O-linesmen, still cut Ford.

Whoa there, fella! There's bold, and then there's BOLD! In order for the Jets to come in second in the division:

  • The Pats* would have to be significantly worse than last year,
  • Tua would have to prove himself the flop than many suspect he is,
  • McDaniel would have to flame out as a HC,
  • Saleh would have to be the real deal at HC,
  • And the Jets would have to take a significant step forward with their improved roster.

All of which is... quite plausible.

During a much ballyhooed press conference Josh Allen comes out as touchdown fluid.  Meaning he is comfortable being referred to, and perceived as, throwing them, rushing them and catching them.

He also would like to go by his preferred TD pronouns: Pzz, Ruzz and Catzz

I have learned.   Stay far away from any kind of Bills team predictions.

Except this.  Bills will not have a red helmet game this year.

Despite perceived emphasis on adding pass catching RBs, Singletary improves on his 4.6 yards per rush last season and hits 1000 yards behind improved run blocking.

Diggs, Davis, Knox, Allen, and Singletary are all selected for the Pro Bowl, and none go.

And the biggest boldest would never happen prediction, a Bills DB gets selected for the Pro Bowl and not All Pro.

NFL:

- The Broncos hype train derails by about Week 6. Las Vegas becomes the "surprise" AFC West Team with an incredible pass rush led by Chandler Jones and Maxx Crosby. Crosby goes on to lead the league in sacks.

- Packers squeak into the playoffs, thanks in part to a borderline 1,000 yard resurgent season by everybody's favorite weirdo, Sammy Watkins. They then lose early in the playoffs again, and everybody for about the 10th year in a row wonders what now nearly 40 year old Aaron Rodgers has left in him.

- Mitch Trubisky has a great season as the clear #1 in Pittsburgh

- Justin Herbert puts up 4500/40 in the air and becomes the clear-cut 2nd best QB talent behind Allen. Lamar continues to regress. Kyler Murray continues to be annoying.

Bills:

- Von Miller leads the AFC East in sacks

- Zack Moss makes the team and is a dependable goal line threat - 8+ TDs

- Poyer is named first team All-Pro again and finally makes his first Pro Bowl

- Punting is a problem - Punt God loses his powers and Haack takes 19 seconds to get a punt off in a preseason game

I bolded the two predictions that I'd call bold. And saying the Ravens will miss the playoffs really doesn't even feel super bold to me on paper, if we ignore their past record of success under this regime.

The other six predictions seem like decent bets depending on the odds.

Okay, upon further review, predicting a specific, injured, unsigned WR will catch a TD in the Super Bowl IS bold. Even if that same player did this very thing last season...
