John Brown wonders if Bills’ Josh Allen had any input on release

Recommended Posts

"On Thursday morning, Brown joined Solomon Wilcots and Ed McCaffrey on SiriusXM NFL Radio to discuss his release from Buffalo. When asked if the release was a surprise, Brown noted that he had a feeling that his time was coming to an end in Buffalo but added that the team did not give him any sort of heads up on their decision to release him."

“You know, honesty, we didn’t know nothing, we weren’t even given a heads up,” Brown told Wilcots. “But I’m a strong believer in God and I just had a feeling it was going to come to that time, especially when the money dropped.  And I dealt with a few injuries so I missed, like, five games so the team went 5-0 without me. [inaudible]  But you know, different situations, the way things could have been handled.”  "

"Although Brown noted that the offense and team played well without him in 2020, the wide receiver wondered out loud if Josh Allen had any say in Buffalo’s decision. (...)

“Like, I don’t know if they gave Josh Allen input on it,” said Brown.  “He should have had input.  Or, if he did have input I thought he would want me to stay.” "

"Realistically, Allen has no say on what Brandon Beane and company do this offseason. Due to the salary cap being lowered in 2021, Beane--like every other GM in the league--is going to have to make some tough decisions. Unfortunately for Brown, his salary cap and Buffalo’s play without him in 2020 made him an easy cut candidate."

Of course Josh would want him to stay this was a salary cap issue and he wouldn’t take pay cut and got released

Reading his comments ... It appears he wasn’t asked to take a pay cut ..

He says him and his agent” weren’t given a heads up” about being cut...

If Beane says... take a pay cut or you will be cut... that’s a pretty big heads up...

I got a sense Bills did not even ask him about taking a cut - that is why it was a surprise to him. Guess the cap situation is such that they dont have even 4-5 mill for Brown. It is the mid-level squeeze.

I would avoid copy and pasting articles (even with a link) to make a thread.

NFL players seem to be modeling their approach to personnel and other front office decisions based on where the NBA has trended.  It's not going to end well, particularly when QBs demand to be traded or to have a say in who the HC or GM is.  Right now I cannot imagine being a Texans or Seahawks fan and learning your star QB wants out because they're unhappy with who the GM is or thinks they need more talent to compete.

EDIT: Where does this end?  Do teams, especially those with big dollar QB's, allow high priced players input on player personnel decisions to satisfy them? Does the QB take added heat then if a player doesn't work out or when the cap is not managed poorly?

I am curious as to why they did not reach out to him for a pay cut. Per the above, he said he was sort of blindsided. If it was a pure salary cap move, I would assume the FO would have tried to restructure. I am not sure, but some food for thought.

The more I read about this it sounds more like Brown is bummed they didn't even give him a chance to come back at a reduced number and views that as a bit of a sleight. Could be he thinks it's a knock on him or could be he wanted to stick around, not sure, but it's clear he had convinced himself he was going to stick around for the last year of his contract.

His agent must not have read the news the last month cause he was talked about as being the most likely to be cut on the team

I mean... It's a one sentence question from a powerless WR who just got fired from a team he wanted to be part of and who is feeling pretty raw. I wouldnt put that much weight on it that it is setting any trends or starting to snowball. It will be out of thought in another few days.

I like John Brown.  He's a good WR and he was a very good get for the Bills.  My guess is the Bills want to upgrade their pass rush by using the cap savings on a free agent DE and upgrade the WR position via draft with a true playmaker with speed, more size, and dynamic runner.

I dont think there was much wiggle room in his contract.  A healthy John Brown on a 9.5 million dollar contract is grossly underpaid.   Even missing the time he did, the value he brings to a team is worth at least that much when you consider what players at that position get paid.

If he was a bit younger and a bit more available he probably sticks, but those are rose colored glasses.  When you're looking at the reality of the situation, where you have an almost 32 year old wideout who cant stay on the field, its probably better for the team and the player to just cut ties and let him go to free agency.

Yep, a "tempest in a teapot".

What’s that got to do with him refusing to take a pay cut like you originally said?

Brown played a big role in Allen’s development during his time in Buffalo. Brown noted that he felt Allen deserved to have his voice heard and figured that the quarterback would want him back this season.

He should be playing with Watson or Wilson as part of a package deal. Teams can save money on OC.

There really was no drop off when Brown was out, especially as the season went on.

Cutting Brown, unfortunately, made perfect sense when it came to saving money. I liked the guy but I think I'd rather see money spent elsewhere.

I think this happens in every industry.  I left a job 10 years ago because of our Regional Manager.  I 100% knew his plan wasn't going to work and then I left.  3 years later, all offices in that division closed.  I saw the writing on the wall.

I'm in manufacturing right now and mills or plants that are run by bad GM/Ops Managers have high turnover because no one wants to work for them.

Their bonuses are effected by the success of the plant.  If the plant isn't successful, that's money out of your pocket.

I don't think anyone should sacrifice their careers because they are reporting to bad management.

May be they don't want big money on a 3rd WR but instead use it to get a #1 TE....

Personally I don’t love the implication that Josh could’ve/should’ve spoken out on this (who’s to say whether or not Josh even knew before Brown). That’s unfair extra pressure on Josh with no upside, imho. At the end of the day no matter how good Josh is or gets to be, one has to only take a glance at Rodgers’ situation in GB to know that a FO gets to do what it wants when it wants as to the roster, franchise QB thoughts be durned.

Never played for Carolina so he didn’t qualify for a pay cut..... Honestly not sure. Maybe they are targeting someone better and more reliable such as Samuel(at least I can hope/dream). Beane loves his draft picks so perhaps he is thinking of just sliding Davis into his slot. A move I wouldn’t like for a team with SB aspirations in 2021.

Ot maybe he just needed some money freed up to pay Daryl Williams or a DE they are chasing?

Hopefully! And good point. Brown was set to make, what, $9-10M this year? So how much of a pay cut is he really going to take? Is he willing to go down to $1M just to stay on this team? I'm sure he can get more than that somewhere else. It's what's best for both sides whether he realizes it right now or not. Good luck to him.

I don't know, it could have been, "we would like you to take a pay cut," and that was all that was communicated, and the Agent/Brown are now claiming this was not a "heads up."

I'm not sure he is getting a big payday.  Rookie WR's, and a lot of FA WR's out there.  Cap issues all around.  Perhaps some team throws stupid money at him, but he's taking somewhat of a risk here, IMO

I dont think he'll get a big payday. Just saying it will still be more than what the Bills want to pay him when we need all the cap room we can get. I'd be interested in hearing the minimum he'd be willing to go down to in order to stay on the team.

When you face situations in life you obviously question things. My take is it was a FO decision. Business is business and that's that.

When you're faced with a cap that reflects a pandemic and loss of revenue this is going to happen. John answered his own question. The team's offense didn't falter without him. I'm sure he stays on a restructure if the cap was above 200. Thanks for all you did for Josh Smoke but this offseason will see crazy good players released.

So you have gone from he wouldn’t take a pay cut , to his agent should have offered to take a pay cut before Beame cut him? is that right?

Instead of trying to throw shade on Josh, he should of been asking himself more about his effort after returning from injury. To me, it was piss poor. If he truly wanted to be a part of team maybe he could of taken a pay cut or reworked an incentive laden contract. Personally, I think this was bush league.

that’s my take too.

the reality is I think the FO didn’t feel

he was reliable enough with all the injuries. They don’t have the luxury of paying him $5M per year, and having him Miss 8 games this year.

I feel bad for him, but this is happening all over the league.  A lot of guys are being let go who want to stay with their teams.  But unfortunately this is the price tag for COVID this year.

I don't remember anything about him refusing to take a pay cut, but I have a hard time believing that he and his agent didn't have at least some discussion with Beane about taking one to stay with the team.
