BeastMode54
Butler was put in a less than ideal situation and was much better than Jefferson, and Addison for that matter. He's young (26) and will be playing his normal position next year. Young piece to move forward with, and he will get paid once the cap goes up 21 3

Of all of the DL cannon fodder mentioned around here he was by far my favorite.

whatdrought
It was a 6 million hit before, right? Gotta hope it’s at least in the 2-3 range now. Don’t love keeping him at Jefferson’s expense. 2

GunnerBill
If it is a cut with escalators to earn some of it back a la Morse then I am in favour. It can't be a kick the can move though because he is a FA after 2021....
Process
Should have just let him go, IMO. But this is better than nothing.

1st Ammendment NoMas
I think when he was healthy, he played well enough and the defense seemed to improve toward the end of the year. At the right price, he's ok. Getting star back and getting an edge disrupter will make a difference. Another LB or 2 also.
MJS
If you cut him you still have to sign a guy to replace him. Restructuring makes sense.

Hope he took few million pay cut.

Exactly he's a penetrating DT not a take on blockers NT, there's a difference. Butler was signed to replace Jordan Phillips and when Star didn't return we kinda forced him to be the big man in the middle yet that's not what he's all about. TheyCallMeAndy
Butler, like so many on the DL, fell victim to no offseason, new defense, and injuries.

Neither Butler nor Jefferson were able to fill the role the Bills envisioned for them, due to Phillips delayed recovery from ACL and Lotululei opting out. Jefferson had slightly more playing time and slightly better stats, but Butler spent more time being asked to rotate at 1TDT where stats are harder to come by. 1 hour ago, whatdrought said: It was a 6 million hit before, right? Buftex
It's funny that everyone sees Star was the "missing piece" from the D-line in 2020, when many wanted him cut in 2019! 2

Thats cause most dont understand his role on the dline. He will never have the stats. His role on D is basically to block/prevent Olineman from climbing to our LBs. Very hard to find a player willing to do such dirty work. 2
BuffaloRebound
Hopefully Butler can play the Jordan Phillips role if Star returns or we sign/draft a space eater.

Please explain. My understanding is retirement is a release thus he costs cap. This is why were letting Lee Smith retire cause otherwise were cutting him. I know @Cover 1 has discussed it before but here is another reference from last year (3rd paragraph). https://www.catscratchreader.com/2020/1/15/21066845/nfl-carolina-panthers-luke-kuechly-retirement-cap-space-2020-what-does-it-mean Edited March 10, 2021 by YattaOkasan
billsfan89
I would have preferred to keep Jefferson as a rotational pass rusher if he was willing to take a pay cut but Butler as a rotational player as a pass rusher at a reduced salary is fine.
Aussie Joe
Does this mean it’s less likely they draft DT now? Not before round 5 anyways...
John from Riverside
I actually thought Butler played well in spots but was not consistant. A pay cut keeps from adding a hole on a super bowl caliber team while giving us cap relief. We are already bloodletting at other spots as it is.

This is why were letting Lee Smith retire cause otherwise were cutting him. It's not a release. It's a player deciding to hang-it-up. A team is allowed to demand repayment of the unamortized signing bonus, but usually they don't, as a gift for services rendered. Since Star was barely with the Bills and signed a new deal before opting-out, they'll definitely go after his. Plus there is the $4.5M salary saved and any other likely to be earned incentives, roster and game bonuses, etc.
