HappyDays
Makes sense as a stopgap. Joe Marino talked about him on the locked on Bills podcast the other day and said he's not particularly athletic, but he's reliable and would definitely be an improvement. I expect us to draft a TE on day 1 or 2 regardless.

Happy
He's only 24 and is a solid TE. Hope we get him. Not sure how Jax will be able to afford him, their cap situation isn't good. One of our posters, @MrEpsYtown mentioned the possibility of James becoming a Buffalo Bill a couple of months ago.

I'm guessing a nice 4 yr deal and he becomes our starter whilst mentoring a draft pick pick as well. As you said, I still see us drafting a good TE, maybe just not as high as day one or two, unless the value can't be denied. Otherwise, with JJ and Croom on the roster, we could probably hold of till 4th rd and snag somebody. Just a thought....

IgotBILLStopay
Among all the TE names we have heard bandied about, this is the one I am most excited about. Young, healthy TE on an upward trajectory. And the Bills Mafia could embrace a name like that.

Joe Marino talked about him on the locked on Bills podcast the other day and said he's not particularly athletic, but he's reliable and would definitely be an improvement. I expect us to draft a TE on day 1 or 2 regardless. Why a stopgap? I watched the video of him and had this reaction: Good all around TE. Good size. Not the fastest of all TEs, but he runs pretty well. Not the most powerful in the Gronk sense, and he goes down pretty easily, but he's big and can take the hit. Watch him play and it's clear he's an upgrade over Clay, and Clay wasn't horrible. I don't want a tight end who is the feature receiver in my lineup; I want a guy who's a reliable guy who runs good routes and catches the ball when it's thrown to him. James looks like that kind of guy. If the Bills do what we're expecting, which is to get Allen to take the sure-thing short pass instead of the well covered middle-range ball, James looks like a good tight end for that scheme. He lost playing time in 2018 to Vance MacDOnald, but I think that's more of an indication of how good MacDonald was, not that James isn't good enough. He's young, good size. If he believes in the process, I think he'd be a nice addition. 5
Never NEVER Give-up
Thanks for posting the video - I like what I see - big guy, good hands, makes contested catches, I disagree w/previous poster, I think he has decent athleticism - rumblin', stumblin' guy like Gronk. Reliable, gets open. (Don't misinterpret, he is not Gronk!)

BillsSB2020
I wouldn't be opposed to signing James because he'd improve the team. I would be opposed to a large investment. The Steelers went out and got McDonald for a reason. He'd be better than anyone we have, but it wouldn't be the kind of upgrade I'm looking for at tight end. I'd prefer to sign a guy like Maxx Williams and make a major investment at the position in the draft assuming James wants, say, 4 years/6 mil.

TE is overvalued, it’s a complimentary piece in today’s game. You can run rub routes and check down to slot WRs all day long if that’s what you like doing. Because if you think Croom is gonna be on the squad in 2019, we're gonna need a TE that can block. My assumption is that we'll invest a day one or two pick and his primary duty will be as a receiver. SWATeam
He at least knows how to play with a QB who can extend plays. But I’m not a fan, he’s not a difference maker. I’d prefer Maxx Williams. He is at least a really good blocker. 1

Turk71
Decent blocker, not a big threat in the passing game so far. Good complementary te to go with more of a receiving threat imo, not worth overpaying. Edited February 21, 2019 by Turk71

Logic
Would love to see them sign James AND draft a young TE. James/Draftee/Croom is a nice lineup at that position. James is the dependable all-around guy, Croom is the flex receiving option, and draftee is the future at the position. I'd be fine with the Bills drafting two tight ends, but with as many needs as they have, I'm not sure it's reasonable. Furthermore, I get the sense they want a dependable veteran at the position, particularly since TEs historically take a few years to really start producing at a high level in the NFL. James fits the profile of who the Bills should be looking at in free agency: Young players signing their second contracts in the NFL. No third-contract players, unless they come cheap. 5
