The question then remains, who will be the 5th guy when the season starts? Do they keep Basham or try and trade him and go with a guy like Ray or Kingsley at the temporary 5th spot? Keeping him would mean either having SIX DE's when Von returns, which seems unlikely to me as 5 DE's usually represents the most you keep. Or releasing him when Von returns and odds are you won't get him back on the Practice Squad. I think you try and get a pick for Basham if you can before the season and go with Ray or Kingsley at the 5th spot, stashing them on the PS when Von returns. The only thing that gives me pause is giving up on a 2nd Round pick after just 2 seasons and the fact that after this season - Floyd, Lawson, Epenesa, Ray, and Kingsley are all FA's and Basham is under contract past this year. It was an area of need and to get a player of this caliber this late in free agency is a coup. excited to see what the defense looks like this season with McDermott calling plays and the changes made to the d line. Excited to see the offense too. I like what a Beane has done this offseason with no real cap space to speak of. Of course, I'm not advocating for a crappy Bills D or have weaknesses not being addressed. I would rather have the Bills organization to go "all in" on the offensive side of the ball. Devote most of your resources there. Build a D that's able to make some big plays and get a key stop here or there. McD should be able to hold down the fort sort of speak based on the D talent, his scheme, and his creativity. Perhaps my mindset is a bit off here. I'd bet 95% of this board would trade three 7-10 seasons for a SB trophy. I watched since 1980. So I've seen the best and the worst the Bills have done after the merger. And you have to keep in mind, even 6m looks low for a high end FA pass rusher. So the agent may not be rushing to leak numbers even at that amount. Jeremy Fowler reported that Floyd was the most sought after Pass Rusher and many teams were involved with one team beside us "heavily involved". So he had a market. I think in compared to most high end FA Pass Rushers, it will be a bargain. But barely above league minimum would be shocking to me. EDIT: It just came out that it's a 7m dollar deal worth up to 9. Right. Beane said from day 1 his main goal is consistency. This is a guy that got a 4 year 64 mil extension in 2021, 16 mil per average with 33 guaranteed. He got released because they're in full rebuild mode. This dude is borderline elite pass rusher. As expected, he turned down more $ to come here, as Rappaport said. If it was any position on D besides edge , I'd agree with that guy but a great pass rush is the main way to shut down these offenses. Luckily we also have a top 3 secondary, so I love love love this move. I was shocked we landed him for that price, he wants another ring and I'm sure Von was in his ear big time behind the scenes. This is a grand slam signing by Beane and has by far been his best off season yet. Our top 3!!! O improved at literally every position besides QB, C and LT We are loaded.
