How much to play Allen and the starters in the preseason?

Recommended Posts

I’d prefer no entrenched starters -maybe those fighting for spots would be ok - at all against Detroit on Fri night  if possible. I would play all the rookies because they need as many “game” reps as possible. And if any rookies were to get injured, it’s not catastrophic given where they fit into this roster. Kind of how the Steelers approached their first game.

Then against the Bears, I would give Allen a series or two, and maybe a qtr vs the packers. Then he gets a road and home experience before the season, he gets a warm up before the season and plus the last preseason game is still like 2 weeks before week 1. As far as the rest of the starters I think it depends on how well they are practicing and how much work they need but I’m in favor of as little as possible.

I would like to see a ton of Fromm/Webb at QB and a lot of the rookies throughout

I’d like to see a lot of Trubisky. A good looking Mitch can only boost his trade value for a team in need of a QB. I’m not looking to trade Mitch early, but later on he could get the Bills a pick in future drafts

None. I’ve invited Josh and Steph over to watch the games with me.

We’ll be analyzing every play to death, just like always, while swillin’ Labbatts ‘n scarfin’ wings & pizza. Prolly toss the ball around a little too - just to be sure they’re ready for the Steelers..

I’m interested in trading the other two but not Mitch. I actually prefer Mitch not play all that much. An injury to him would be no bueno

Out of curiosity why would you do a quarter in the 2nd game instead of the third?

Legacy thinking.  When we had 4 games, they played a half in the second to last preseason game.  I don’t want them to play that much, but it would now be game 3.

I’d not looking to trade Mitch, but it the Colts or Cowboys came knocking, I would listen

I want Allen and the first team offense to play the entire preseason and destroy the opposing team's third stringers.

Same, I also want them to play none at all so they don't get hurt but damn I wants some more of that high flying 2020 Bills football.

I would avoid the key guys all preseason. Maybe, maybe one quarter for the starters in game 3, the rest is purely the backups.
Allen probably shouldn’t see the field at all since we got Mitch, Fromm and Webb right? Their timing sounds like it’s all good already I don’t see the advantage risking Allen or Diggs in meaningless games

I don't think the preseason work is going to overcome 4 years of tape.

Game 3, even though it’s the last one, is still a full 15 days before week 1 so seems like the right timing …. Game 4 used to be like 10 days prior or something. I would just skip game 1 for most starters, a couple series game 2, a quarter game 3 and then it’s go time

I dunno - those 4 years show A LOT more than u might think - meaning his record as a starter wasn't bad, the man doesn't suck.  Bills have a decent chip in thier pile they can use if needed.

I don’t think that’s the issue as much as if a team would want to trade for him, it won’t be because of anything he did in the preseason against vanilla defenses and backups. It will be because of the film/ track record they already have.

Yolo - agree 100%.  An aside - I am blown away at the sheer number of posts.  So if I were to post 50 times a day it would take me 4.5 years to catch up, that ONLY if you didn't post during that time!!!  Well done sir - well done!!!!

Given the continuity of this offense year after year let Josh handoff one ball and pull! I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the other teams trying to push a bit harder against him.

But in all seriousness I agree with you, a series or two at most. More so game 2, I wouldn’t let him see Game three or much of game 1 if any.

I’m wondering if there will be any sneaky auditions like they did in Detroit. I remember going to the game and up to that point  all we did was throw and throw. That game all we did was run and run. I’m like well this is interesting and not what we have been doing. . Next week Shady was cut.

Like Kwai said, Mitch wasn’t horrible. His problem was in opportune turnovers and decision making. Better weapons would have helped him too

All 12 quarters.... why do the B/U's need reps? they aren't playing any of the 17 that count ;)

No really I think the 1st half of Game 1 against the ankle biters is a good start,

Then the  1st Quarter of game 2 against Dah Bears

Then 2 series at home against the Pack just so the home faithful get a little more for their money than 2nd and 3rd stringers.

How much do we play them?

However much Sean thinks is right, he knows what he’s up to, I trust his judgment. Especially being that Sean is a far better decision maker concerning this question than anyone on this forum, and that’s putting it kindly…, the sent of fear is present in many responses here,

Go Bills!!!

I’d actually put Josh up in the coaches booth with Daboll for most/all of the preseason. He needs fewer physical reps and as much strategy and defensive reads as he can get from the Master before he gets his HC gig. As the offense comes to the line Daboll could quiz Josh on what he sees and what audible he would check to throughout the games.

I’ve never seen a team do this but with 4 QBs on the roster, Buffalo could afford one upstairs learning instead of on the sidelines.

My 2 cents.

No way we trade away our insurance policy for what at best would be a 3rd rounder. Doesn't make sense. Allen is a tough SOB but we all know his playing style is higher risk than the average QB so having Mitch around is us having our 2018 Foles.

Only 3 preseason games this year. My guess for Friday night at Detroit is Josh and the rest of the starters play a series or two at most. We don't want injuries but at the same time they need to get some work in building up towards the Steelers on opening day.

I actually would be surprised if Josh plays at all in a live game where he could be hit until Dion Dawkins is back and has a few practices under his belt.

THIS preseason, more than any other in a long time around here, is for the bubble players.  Let's see the draft picks.  This should be all Webb and Fromm.. Gentry and Hollister..  Zimmer and Basham...  Lamp and Long...  Wildgoose and Hamlin.....  type of game...
