How are we feeling about Elam?

He’s still on the team, still in the doghouse and probably still won’t play. Need depth in the secondary which is why they’ll keep him around. Still have him for 2 more seasons on cost control and 5 if he somehow finds his way out of the first two stipulations and performs.

2 likely scenarios that could happen if that doesn’t transpire; he’s traded mid season or next year after years end.

The people calling to trade him-why? What are the Bills going to get for him? A 6th round pick? Cool, he’s more valuable than that to the team.  You just want him gone because you’re butt hurt he hasn’t played up to expectations, but trading him is an extremely foolish move. He’s cheap, he plus a position of need , and he has shown flashes

I would like to see what some of the new coaches can do with him. Sometimes it takes a different voice. Obviously he has been a massive disappointment and a weird fit, but he was overdrafted and it always kind of felt like it wasn't going to work.

Curious to hear your thoughts on this upcoming season for Elam and expectations.

Do you think he's starting?

Is he traded?

Or is he CB3 behind Douglas and Benford?

He's number 3 behind Douglas and Benford. Yet I'm sure we'll draft a CB somewhere with our 11 picks as competition and moreso if we don't re-sign Dane Jackson. I will say I like him better than Cam Lewis but also be on the eye for a cheap vet to bring into the mix.

I have heard the whispers that he was being held back because he was in John Butler's doghouse, not McDermott's. If that's true I expect to see him given an opportunity to be the third boundary corner and make a few spot starts for injury. Perhaps the feeling from the new defensive coaches had something to do with Rasul being restructured instead of extended to see what they truly have in Elam before investing further.

Play on the field from what I've seen has been up and down. Has given up catches and penalties. However has made a few splash plays as well.

I learned the lesson last off season not to rush too fast to judgement from the Bernard situation. I'm just hoping we finally see him get the snaps on the field to see what's there. I expect him showcased a bit in the preseason.

I think he can be a very good corner. He's made for man coverage and this team needs to adapt to be able to play man coverage. There are teams where we will never get home with rushing 4. We need to be able to play some man/press. As a matter of fact, this team needs to prioritize new scheming defensively.

They should be able to create pressure when they need to...be it..

4-3 base with man coverage and sending a LB on every play...

Playing a 5-2-4 at times like we did with Lorax or..

more blitzing on nickel.

While I believe McD is worlds better than Frazier and did an excellent job with the injuries last year, I would really like to see some innovation from him this year.

Hopefully he let's Babich be creative with line stunts as well as the above.

We completely ***** up. After his first year was the only chance to trade him. Especially if we could have just worked him into the lineup. We may have got a 5th on a draft day trade. More value than he's offered the team at all.

My gut says traded.

It sucks because we may be lucky to get a 5th. After his first year when it should have been clear to the Bills org he didn't work for our needs we could have gotten more if we just put him on the field in any capacity. We refused. Mind boggling.

To who and for what?

Any other CB3, or a Juggs machine and a case of athletic tape.  Your opinions may vary.

Feels like a bust so far but at the same time I would like to see him play more.  He just seems like "not a scheme fit" and maybe should be traded.

Obviously based on his skill set and our scheme this was an awful pick. We don't play enough man to justify his snap count. And clearly they're struggling to teach him zone. McDuffie would've been perfect if KC hadn't snagged him?

A team that plays much more man. And for something like a 5th that becomes a 4th if he hits certain indicators. Ravens feels like a possible given they have guys like Darby and Ya-Sin as impending FAs but hard to say until post FA and the draft.

I suspect this is an end of camp trade btw rather than anything in the short term.

I highly doubt this rumor is true.

What kind of head coach would McDermott be if he let a CB coach keep his 1st round pick on the sideline for 2 years.

Just sounds absurd.

I don't think the rumour is literally that Butler was saying to McDermott "don't play this guy, he sucks" but more that the relationship between Butler and Elam was restricting his development. That is more believable because players spend the most time with their position coaches and if that relationship breaks down it is a problem.

That isn't me saying I believe the rumour by the way.... or that I think it is the real reason Elam hasn't worked out. I don't think he has worked out because the issues he had on tape in transition in college are there when you see him play in the NFL too and this scheme really shows those weaknesses up. They took a chance on their ability to "fix" it because the physical potential was so high. It hasn't worked.

I watch him on the field make plays and wonder what he is or isn’t doing inside the building to cause his lack of opportunity.

Elam’s position coach is replaced and stories of him and Elam not getting along surface, and it’s starting to make sense.

I don’t have a good handle on Elam’s ability to start week to week because we haven’t seen it, I do know he makes plays in big games.

He's 22.  I think he's the next one that some fans called a bust, but then broke out (Oliver, Epenesa, Bernard, et al.)

I just don't think he is a guy you can consistently have at the position in big games.

So you're saying trade for a 2025 pick. I think it's too early for them to give up on a 1st rd. pick from a PR standpoint. I also believe he'll make the 53.

I don't see them going FA at both safety and CB. I'm no fan of Cam Lewis so maybe they pick up 2 safeties. Pay up for one (Stone?) and maybe reunite Rapp with Jordan Fuller. I think they're gonna be able to pick a good one as well.

I think a day 3 CB, 1 or 2 picks, one being a slot/nickel type. Douglas/ Benford  Jackson/Elam and T.J. and hopefully hit another Alex Austin or 2.

Yes, I am. Is that any worse than continuing to have him not on the field from a PR perspective? I just suspect they will come to the conclusion by the end of camp that it isn't going to work out. Last camp they gave him first crack at starting and he ended up 3rd in a 3 man race. I don't think he can play in this defense. My gut feeling is that will be staring everyone in the face by the end of camp.

You may end up being right, but I think we'll see a similar story like the Bernard thing last year.

The whole situation smells like another McD screw up. The guy was injured but instead of putting him on IR they let him languish with no announcement and just sit him every week until they finally put him on IR.

Maybe the player hid the injury which is stupid if true.

Probably has as much raw talent as any CB on the team.

As with all things I dont trust McDermott at all and place the blame with him until proven otherwise. I would not be surprised if he sits again while we suffer another year of this clown HC.
