Who is going to hold the ball on tee for kickoffs when it's windy out?

The Bills score a lot, they kickoff way more than they punt and it's rather windy at highmark.

Maybe while we are at it, since it's never been done before (lol), we can keep a player just as a "holding the football on the kickoff-tee on windy days specialist" lol

Finally someone else is concerned about this oversight by the team. There should have been an open competition in camp, they could have brought in some big fans to simulate wind to prepare for this. This neglect of this important position might come back to haunt them in the regular season.

By keeping Haack, not only are we assuring consistent ball placement for Bass in all kinds of weather, but the kicking room currently has great chemistry (the three of them work well together during kicking meetings). Why cut Haack when some other big bodied dufus will never see the field?

I also heard they like to hang out together off the field with their families. Kind of like the things @Gugny likes to do 🍍. I wouldn’t want to screw up someone’s mojo.

I’m not suggesting we keep two punters. I’m saying we need a kicker (Bass), punter (Araiza) and Designated Holder (Haack). Continuity between Bass and Haack is worth at least 24-27 pts this season. I’ll hang up and listen.

So you want to depend on a rookie from San Diego to hold the ball for Bass with the AFC Championship on the line (possibly in sub zero temps at OP)? Dig deep into your mind. Think again. It’s worth 650k to have a designated holder.

You think bass is missing 8 or 9 fgs because of araiza? Lol based on what?

Hear me out…. This is as dumb as the caller on WGR during the postgame that said we should be shopping  #17 for draft picks because “Casey Keenum” would win us the division.

Not sure if already brought up but maybe he have Haack the reps yesterday because they think they can get a pick for him before final cut downs

Great point. I thought it was just a courtesy they were doing for haack. You teach the rook how to hold and we let you take all the preseason punts. They have been known to do right by players but I like this idea as well

Meanwhile, Araiza is a left footed kicker.  I guess none of you understand the stress you put on your left knee joint while holding for kicks.  Ask any physical therapist or anatomist.  Headline: Araiza can't hold kicks on the left side of Bass...has to be on the right where all the pressure is on his left knee.  Great forethought fellas.

Haack comes cheap and Bass is accustomed to how his hands work, his cadence and how/where he places the ball.  But if you want our season to come down to a FG and Araiza flubs it (or strains his left knee), don't come back to me arguing how it just didn't matter.

The others are thinking in terms of Tiddlywinks while you're operating from the perspective of 3D chess.

Maybe it would be easier if you made your points using simple mathematical theorems?

Just a thought.

Food for thought.

Our team is stacked and DEEEEP.

We didn’t even have a chance to see Punt God hold for Bass much under pressure. Aren’t we all hoping to have a guy that can hold the ball properly when the game is on the line?

Keep Bass - Obviously

Keep Araiza - 78 yd punts. Obviously.
Keep Haack - FG Holder Specialist

It’s never been done (to my knowledge) but well worth it.

Fire away.

If I were you, I'd try fasting!

January if 5 months away.  By then Araiza will have 5 months experience under his belt..  Is it a concern, yes but not high enough to be worth keeping Haack and cutting someone else for this.

That 5th string CB or OG can be stowed on the PS. How often do the stars align to have solid chemistry in the kicking room and a veteran who can coach Araiza for a year or two on proper holding? I know, I know “but he’ll cost money!”  Yeah, so does car insurance but it’s essential.

It's not a matter of stashing them on the PS.  You have now reduced the slots left for offense or defense by one on the 53 man roster as you now only have 49 spots available.

You mention CB, tell me which of these names do you think could even slip through to the PS: T White, T Johnson, D Jackson, S Neal, K Elam, or C Benford??   You also now would only have 5 of them left on the roster.  CB is normally one of the spots each week someone sits out on, so now down to 4 CB's on game day

You also mention OG, so now instead of having 9 OL on the 53 and typically sit one on Sundays, so now have 8 to start with.  Again one of the OL is usually also one of the six you don't suit on on Sundays so are you now going to sit one of the 8 and only play with 7?  However if you do that, there's a rule that says if you don't keep 8 OL active on Sundays, you can only suit up 46 instead of 47.  So now down another player so you can have an extra holder.

This has nothing to do with money, it's everything to do with roster management and player allotment per position.  Having players available on Sundays is the essential part and your idea would risk that.

There's another whole thread discussing how many of the specialists to keep as far as guys like Jones, Matakevich, Neal etc. and how to best make the numbers work without limiting ST players.  You're now further reducing that for an extra holder!!

I can't believe you failed to realize that with how windy it gets we'll probably need a dedicated kickoff holder too, just in case

Not keeping 5 RB's it's either Jones or Blackshear, but not both.  As others mentioned that extra slot will go to LB, so ends up 25 each offense and defense plus 3 ST

And if White starts out on IR, likely spot would be taken by either Lewis or McCloud  believe is his name (the guy with 6 stitches)

Are you insane? Azaria has been flawless as a holder. I would see if another team would give us a day 3 pick for Haack .

I’ll revolt if we keep Tawain Jones over either.

Nothing against Jones. Except his age, contract and fact he doesnt contribute to the offense. This team is good enough to let him go so they can keep a young player.

When your big position battle in preseason is Punter/FG Holder, you probably are a really good football team.

Yeah, it’s all fun and games until somebody can’t get the snap down with the laces out to win the Super Bowl!!!

I’m thinking the holder might need a back up……

Huh???  I told the OP he was crazy, think you're quoting the wrong post!

Pretty sure I recall you saying Haack might be worth a roster spot when a Championship is on the line. I screenshotted it so you can’t go changing your post now. It’s ok to admit it. Haack deserves a spot for continuity in FG scoring.

@BringBackFergy  fergy you have riled the masses here at 2bd. Half the fanbase think you have lost your mind, the other think you may have a genius thought worthy of serious consideration. That in itself makes this thread a fun read.

Props to you Senor Rabble err Fergy

Well, if it turns out to be a problem during the season, I'm sure it will be addressed long before the playoffs. I know the punter always holds these days, but certainly Keenum could (I know, I know, the whole "practice with special teams" things, but we are talking about maybe half a season here), or there's probably someone else on specials who has good hands and could pick up the job pretty quickly.

If Araiza wins the punting competition, well, you'd have to weigh the net benefit of Better Punter/Field Position vs. Very Slightly Increased Risk of a Missed Field Goal or Extra Point.

Serious question:  Why is anyone still talking about "holding" anyway?  Has there even been a single report suggesting Araiza is struggling with holding?  I mean I have not seen one.  In fact, all reports I have seen have been that he is doing just fine with it and there have been no issues in any of the games or scrimmages yet either.

So why is anyone still worried about holding for FG's still?  It's literally been a non-issue since he arrived in Buffalo.

The fact that this thread has reached 6 pages (and counting) is just ridiculous…this place is gonna go nuts the first time Bass misses a kick! I think some of it is there are people who think “hasn’t done it” and assume it means “will never be able to do it.” But you’re right, there hasn’t been one single negative report but people won’t allow that thought to leave their head

I can't believe @BringBackFergy still gets you guys to bite so hard on his joke threads. Come on guys. He wasn't serious. His previous efforts "Josh Allen to tight end" and "Offensive line by committee" also managed 7 or 8 pages of people reacting.

People who are not serious all the time should be banned...THIS IS BUFFALO BILLS FOOTBALL....

Once a notion gets in someone's head it tends to stay.

As we all recall, the fans of other AFC East teams knew Josh could not play well with a crowd.
