His body language, especially from the end zone head on view, shows him having an "oh no" moment. You can see it in the video in this thread, but its more obvious in the head on. He didn't think Smith would release. If he had gone to Lee Smith, then he wouldn't have had that highlight reel throw to Gabe Davis that the entire nation saw....and this was their reaction.
