Virgil
Growing up watching movies about boys with abusive fathers, it was interesting to me when the boys grew into men both larger and stronger than their fathers, but still cower before them. Even in a fight, the mental hold weakened the son. If fighting a clone of their father, but not in facial resemblance, it wouldn’t be much of a contest. Watching the board this week, it feels similar to me in how many regard the Patriots. The mental beating taken from the Pats has people hyping this game up more than it should be. Granted, I also believe many of the players feel the same way. I expect Josh to be locked in out the gate (unless the shoulder is a real thing). I expect a slight amount of caution and overthinking from the coaches. I expect a game of grown son versus father. If I said we were playing any other 2 win team that had their stats, we wouldn’t be thinking much of them. I would actually liken them to the Broncos, who I also expect to beat. Yes, losing would suck. But moreso because it’s a division game to a 2 win team and we have a hard schedule to the point that we need to win the easy ones. Am I nervous for the game? Yes. But mainly because we haven’t played great the last 3 weeks. We can’t afford losses to crap teams. Another bad week might indicate that the first 4 weeks was the real mirage. But not because the Pats are a better team. We are the better team at almost every single position and should win this game at home. That’s the fact. It’s any given Sunday and crazier things have happened. Losing would be an upset for the Pats. Success
I fully recognize that what has happened to me over the past 20 years is not healthy. It's really not something I ever anticipated experiencing as a sports fan. I knew there would be rivalries and down years, and some level of more "fun" sports hate - but I never anticipated the depth of loathing and true anguish of being so thoroughly owned by one team over such a long period of time. There were some Sundays that felt like an upcoming dentist appointment. And not a routine cleaning - more like root canal. And there was no way of avoiding it. I couldn't just say "I wont' watch the game this year," or "I don't really care about the outcome." The Sundays we played the Patriots some of those years instilled a deep dread...kind of like the "sound of inevitability" when Agent Smith has Neo's head on the railroad tracks. Part of me is a little peeved that the 1st year Brady is gone, and the Bills genuinely have a better team, happens to coincide with a pandemic. But I do feel like this season is the start of the healing. It's important to me that we win on Sunday, but not life or death. I like our chances to at least split w/ them this season, and think that the future is looking bright overall. It's gonna take awhile for me, though. 3
Chandler#81
As a member of the geriatric set, I’ve known fantastic Bills teams from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s & ‘90s. The bad lean seasons are easier to cope with knowing life rolls in cycles. Granted, this recent lean cycle has left a Mark, but I knew we’d eventually be back. We are Back.

buffalo2218
Even with a win, the Bills won’t be anywhere near ready to ask the Pats “Who’s your daddy?” If the Bills struggle to win this game the same way they did last week (offensively speaking), then I believe the rest of the year will be a disappointing one. Teams like Pittsburgh and Seattle could totally deflate the Bills with blowout wins Edited October 29, 2020 by buffalo2218
clearwater cadet
The Bills remind me of my kids, I love them, but they aways disappoint me when I need them. Matt_In_NH
The Bills are the better team, no questioning that. But we will get Belicheck's best effort this week. They will be in desperation mode....if they lose this game, while it does not end their season, it makes their playoff chances very very low, he knows that. The best path forward for them, and us is to win the division. BB has a large ego and there is nothing he would want more than to continue to have success after Brady leaves, after everyone counted them out during a 3 game losing streak. In some ways, he and the Pats have nothing to lose, it is expected that they should lose this game. I do not expect a blowout, this game will be close with calls having impacts, stupid penalties having significant impacts. If the Bills can't stop the run it could get embarrassing. Allen gets a little over hyped for big games, hopefully he can get settled in quickly. I truly believe if the Bills dont shoot themselves in the foot they will win but they need to go out and actually do it.

GunnerBill
@Virgil don't do this to me..... I thought I had clicked onto a different one of my 'favourites' when I saw this thread title..... Back on topic.... my dad is a much better sportsman than me. He was a pro soccer player for a number of years and then played at a much better level of semi-pro than I. He is a better cricketer than me, a better tennis player than me and a better golfer than me. But about 5 years ago we played golf in a summer when he was just coming off a meniscus operation. I sensed my opportunity and beat him 3&2. The Patriots are the equivalent of my dad post meniscus operation. Opportunity knocks for Buffalo. 2

JMF2006
Thanks Virg for the psychoanalysis Until this team beats them then finishes ahead of them they are still the kings. They(Cheatriots) have 2 games left against the Bills and the Jets and one more with Miami that is now starting a rookie QB(Belly eats them for breakfast) For the fans to count them out its one thing...... but the Bills need a three count to get the belt and another in the rematch to defend it. 1

Forward Progress
I love this take @Virgil - I think you’re absolutely right. Is it too much to suggest that the absence of Kraft Productions providing sideline footage has weakened the Pats ability to anticipate their opponents moves? The drop off in play from the AFC Championship game to this years team goes beyond just the decline in on-field talent. (This is mere speculation from a proud member of the Tin Foil Hat Associaton).

They did struggle in the red zone, and yeah, the defense did play better than they have all year in the second half. But let’s be real here, were gonna be facing better head coaches than Adam Gase and a lot better quarterbacks than Sam Darnold. If that game unleashed the beast in this defense, I’m all for that. But until they consistently play that way, I gotta keep my optimism in check
SageAgainstTheMachine
I think we, the fans, project our insecurities onto the coaches and players. The vast majority of this team weren't Buffalo Bills as recently as 2017 and don't have even 10% the inferiority complex regarding the Patriots as the fans do. Time to punch daddy in the face Eh, I don't like to go for a psychobabble conspiracy when a straightforward explanation will serve. So far in the chess game of football, it's been Evil Hoodie >>>>>> McDermott and Belicheck seems to pwn Daboll's soul. Belicheck is still bigger and stronger as a football coach until McDermott proves otherwise. And I don't think it's "Daddy Issues" holding him back. I'm not sure we're the better team at almost every single position. DL and LB in particular come to mind. If everyone is playing up to their expected potential and we're healthy, yes. But they haven't been until 2nd half against the Jets, and we aren't. But mostly, you summed up the board's mental state very nicely: "mainly because we haven’t played great the last 3 weeks" We haven't played well the last 3 weeks, and in so doing we have displayed weaknesses (Josh Allen inconsistent patience against zone, still trying to force balls; inability to contain a mobile QB) that the Pats may be able to exploit. If we were playing the Patriots in Week 5, I think the mood on the board would be unrealistically euphoric, regardless of "Daddy issues". If you don't agree, go back and look at some of the threads after week 3 and

Da webster guy
We played them tough last year both times, our home game lost because of a special teams error, our coaches failed to react to a clever pre snap shift that was clearly going to force DiMarco to block two rushers. (They pulled in both guys from our gunner who was now completely uncovered) Bojo could have passed it to him and the guy would have ran 50 yards. Belichick gambles that our punter won't audible to a throw. No time out called by McD, Slater has a free path to Bojo, blocked kick for a TD, cost us the game. We held Brady to less than 50% completion that day, 150 yards and a pick, and shut down the run too. They only managed 9 points on offense but that special teams play cost us the W. Outcoached. I bring this up because I don't think our players have any mental baggage with Belichick, most of them were toddlers when the dynasty was in full swing. But McD might have some daddy issues there. He's not a clever coach, more of a motivator and leader, and he knows he's outmatched as a game coach and adjuster vs Old cheatin Bill.
