And at no point have I once said he wasn’t a good coach. Stop being a soccer mom. Seriously. You're a buffoon. Did I call McD a top 5 coach? Compare him to BB? Say he has nothing to improve upon? Of course not. But anyone who doesn't recognize that locking up McD for the long term based upon what he has done in Buffalo is a great thing is (sorry @DC Tom) an idiot. 2
Billy Claude
To me the change on culture and attitude coming out of OBD is real. The players seem to want to be there. You don`t get the leaks and whispers and other nonsense that you got under Rex and Marrone and there seems to be a plan in place that is being followed. That is an underrated and difficult accomplishment. For that he earned the extension. Whether the Bills take the next step will depend on whether Allen is really the man. That is still a question to be answered. Edited August 12, 2020 by Billy Claude grammar
Johnnycage46
For the handful of ardent opposition to this move...why does it matter if it was done now...or done after this coming season? It doesn't affect the salary cap and it really doesn't matter WHEN it happens. I guess some people literally cannot be happy. Must be fun at parties. MJS
What a surprise that we have the usual crowd of posters unhappy with this. Because everything the Bills do is bad. They can't shift in their chair without these posters criticizing their butt placement. Doesn't the constant, eternal criticisms get old? 1 minute ago, Johnnycage46 said: For the handful of ardent opposition to this move...why does it matter if it was done now...or done after this coming season? Greg S
What McDermott is doing in Buffalo is similar to what Parcells did with the Giants. They were horrible in the 70's/early 80's and in Parcells first year they went 3-12-1 in 1983. They improved to 9-7 in 84 and 10-6 in 85. Everything clicked in 1986 as they went 14-2 and beat the Broncos in the Super Bowl. Hope year 4 for McDermott ends the same way it did for Parcells. Unfortunately you must also deal with the BPLODM -- the Bill Parcells Law Of Diminishing Returns. Whenever he goes somewhere there is an immediate uptick, some period of success, and then a falloff before he silently exits. Also, McD's style is nothing like Parcells'. But I see where you're going with the turnaround angle.

If we're SB contenders this season you can give him the mega extension after the season is over Here's the thing: why do you care? It's not like his salary counts against the cap, or this deal is putting the team in a horrible corner if he bombs the next two years. If it doesn't work out, they fire him and eat the salary. But if you follow the current trajectory and the team moves on to do great things, then you don't HAVE to worry about him leaving. 1

And at no point have I once said he wasn’t a good coach. Stop being a soccer mom. I think a majority of people on here were against the Jauron and Fitz extensions or were in the middle about it. At that time most people wanted to wait until the end of the season to lock either in. McD on the other hand has proven that he deserves the security and faith a contract extension affords him. This team hadn't made the playoffs for 17 straight seasons and McD has taken this team to the playoffs 2 out of 3 years here. Even if you want to say the 2017 playoff run was luck it was still a 9-7 winning season. McD has produced 2 winning seasons in 3 years, compare that to the previous 17 when the team only had 2 winning seasons. I just don't see what there is to hate about this extension. It isn't like in 2 or 3 years if McD flops that the Pegulas aren't going to want to eat the contract and get a new coach. This isn't a premature player extension where it impacts the cap. The Bills don't have cheap owners anymore, they are more than willing to eat a few years of a head coaches contract.

In the 17 years before McD how many playoff appearances has the team made? Since McD got here the team has made 2 both with winning records. He has proven to be an elite defensive coach and built a culture and roster that has set up this team for success in the next 3 seasons. I fail to see what there isn't to like about it. There is no salary cap for coaches if the Bills go 6-10 the next two years and McD gets fire the Pegulas just eat the money.

If they have confidence that they're going to want him beyond when his contract ends it makes perfect sense to extend him and not wait for other Coaches to set the market higher.

In my view barring a total collapse (worse than 6 win seasons) McDermott is absolutely safe as houses for 2020, 2021 and 2022. Which means the first year I could imagine him on the hot seat is 2023.... after which it is two years to pay up if you wanna fire him. There is nothing to dislike about this extension.
