syhuang
Panthers part ways with Ron Rivera CHARLOTTE -- The Carolina Panthers have parted ways with head coach Ron Rivera, owner David Tepper announced Tuesday. Secondary coach Perry Fewell has been named interim head coach. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner will transition to special assistant to the head coach, and quarterbacks coach Scott Turner will serve as offensive coordinator. “I believe this is the best decision for the long-term success of our team,” Tepper said. “I have a great deal of respect for Ron and the contributions he has made to this franchise and to this community. I wish him the best. I will immediately begin the search for the next head coach of the Carolina Panthers.”

Logic
Perry Fewell -- second time interim head coach. Interesting career note, that. Also: I wonder if it's hard for Panthers fans to see the best parts of their front office/coaching staff (Beane, McDermott, et al) leave while Rivera remained, only to then see Rivera get fired any way. Seoulofstone
He was a bad head coach (too many losing seasons, horrible divisional record) and his defenses were mostly poor over the years despite that being his calling card. There was a serious drop-off after McD left and you can find a thread pinpointing the dropoff after the departure of Beane and McD. https://www.carolinahuddle.com/boards/topic/160812-sean-mcdermott-brandon-beane/ He will go to the Giants this offseason. Well, he is locked up for 2 more years. Is this where we go off on whether or not Tremaine could play OLB in this situation? But yes, I would jump at that.

Virgil
Damn. Didn’t see him as the first to go. Personally, I don’t want him here in any capacity. We have a good thing going and don’t need another voice in the clog. I’m sure he’ll be an assistant somewhere after all the turnover that’s going to happen this offseason 8
DCOrange
Not surprising, figured he'd end up in New York next year with the Giants. We'll see though; would be shocked if he didn't land another HC gig this offseason (unless he wants to take time off).

whatdrought
Interesting... Not surprised to see him fired, but not sure on the timing. I wouldn't mind him as a DC (though I think Frazier is doing a great job and need not be replaced) but I'm sure he'll have no shortage of offers. With everyone losing their minds for young offensive minds, he would make a ton of sense to partner with someone inexperienced and offensive minded.
atlbillsfan1975
That’s a classless move. Wait till after the season is over. Rivera is a great coach and better person. Gained a lot of respect for him after watching the Amazon series on the Panthers. Edited December 3, 2019 by atlbillsfan1975
GunnerBill
Not shocked. Watching All or Nothing in the summer I was shocked how little coaching I saw. Now I know the way these things are edited is about being good for TV but every team meeting they showed seemed to be: "We gotta have this one. Do it for the guy next to you. Don't let him down." No correction. No fundamentals. No different approach to the gameplan. Just more rah- rah. I came away from that documentary totally unimpressed. People have suggested his name in connection with Dallas but even Jason Garrett did more coaching in the Cowboys All or Nothing season. I think Ron is a good guy. He came across as someone who was respected in the building. But seriously I was left questioning how good of a coach he was. If the owner is seeing that day after day then no wonder they moved on. Good luck Perry Fewell. 1

PoBills33
I don't agree with this, The guy had a banged up Newton last year and 2nd year undrafted QB this year. Before these last 2 years he made the playoffs 4 out of the previous 5 seasons. Also no reason to do him dirty mid season..like that ever helps any.

mushypeaches
Recalling that I got flamed by one very negative poster for suggesting over the summer that Rivera wouldn't make it past this year. Comments here are 100% accurate about him being over-rated and not an x's and o's guy. Laughing at the suggestion that he'll get a head coaching job next year. There are lots of stupid teams out there, but thinking he'll be somewhere off with Mike McCarthy as guys that got real stale in one spot and aren't as valued outside of their original org

Good luck Perry Fewell. He's a perfectly decent coach, and I would NEVER judge coaching acumen based upon snippets from those shows. His won/loss record is pretty good, although he has only 3 winning seasons to 6 losing ones (lots of seven-win seasons). https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/RiveRo0.htm. He has a pretty good track as a coordinator as well and coached under some good people (Andy Reid). He has had genuinely bad luck at the QB position the last two seasons, and that accounts for a lot of the losing. IgotBILLStopay
Boy! Does the NFL have a short memory or what? Recent two time coach of the year (2013 and 2015). His starting QB is out all season and they almost beat the Saints 10 days ago! Just grab him as a special assistant!! All his experience with Can Newton will come in handy for JA's offense as well as defense against Lamar.

billsfan28277
I live here in Charlotte, this was bound to happen. But in every other season I have seen some coaching. I think Rivera is a good leader. I think guys want to play for him. But I am not convinced on him as a coach. 3 winning seasons in 9 years is not getting it done.
