No WR always gets separation, so I think he was quite good today. And Titans have a legit D too, so wasn’t shocking they didn’t give up a lot today to ya either. He also made several important blocks that resulted in our runners gaining more yards. He was quite good.

Taking Z. Jones tells me that he had no trust in Whaley or his staff and banked on a coach he hired to help him make decisions. Bad idea. I hope moving forward McD learns his lesson and has the people to advise in personnel to get it right, because this team still needs significant (Edit: WR) help. Still, nice to see a better passing game today. McDermott has learned but you still want to work with a player as long as you have him. That said Zay needs to go , maybe some other team really liked him in college and thinks a change of scenery will turn him around and we can get something for him. maryland-bills-fan
We can keep him on the roster as long as there is some breathing room there. He really doesn't have any trade value, except that maybe some 0-4 type team might give us a 6th or 7th round pick for him as a long shot beat that he comes to life. I understand that the 2020 draft has good quality in QB and WR. Maybe 5 QB and 10 WR with possible 1st round grades? We might use another 2nd round pick (with a lower draft pick to sweeten the deal and move up some picks) to go for a WR. (1st round pick is for a top LB or DE). Kudos to Zay and it obviously was moving and important to Duke to feel that love and support. Adding in text for those who can't or don't follow Duke on Zay: Williams said he and Jones shared another special moment earlier in the day, prior to kickoff. “Zay prayed for me before the game,” Williams said. “He held me and prayed for me, so he’s always in my ear and he’s always telling me how to do things, and this is a big credit to him. Me and Zay, we’re tight. And he’s a good man.” Williams, once an outcast few believed in, was suddenly the one offering encouragement. “I like Zay. I continue to learn from him. I continue to learn from everybody else in the room,” Williams said. “We’re all a team. We’re all one. So that’s what it’s about. “Zay’s still playing a big part, and we need him, and we love him.” Zay on Duke: Jones barely played and wasn’t targeted, but said he was proud of Williams after the game. “Someone who has came through so much and has worked his tail off to be in this position,” Jones said, “and then have it pay off, and being able to celebrate with his teammates, everyone here is proud of him. It was an awesome thing to see. You can’t say enough about a guy who’s really done everything right. He’s really deserving of it. The guy, he’s a great football player and everyone’s really excited for him.” Jones was unsure what Williams’ success meant for his role with the team moving forward. “I just do my job, you know? That’s all I can do,” Jones said. “But we just won, so I’m just going to enjoy that.” To which I have to say, Thank God the pettiness and "knives out" attitude we see here seems absent from the Bills WR room. I could be wrong, but I think those waiting for Zay to be kicked to the curb and cut may be disappointed. There's no question the coaching staff looked at Zay's performance last week and said ""let's give the next man a try". But we don't have such great WR depth that I see us parting ways for nothing or for an old bag of gym socks. 1

I've heard of a few things Zay's parents have posted, but nothing that sticks to mind. There was the "Zay is gone" (from Buffalo) tweet I recall, and some "fake outrage" afterwords, but its been so long (15 seconds ins long on SM) I hardly care. Bleeding Bills Blue
I think lost in all of this - i don't think there was anything alarming about his play specifically in the NE game. Most teams might wait for a bye week to make a change like this. I think there may have been some kind of confrontation or issue at a meeting/practice for them to just decide to put him on the bench. When the coach specifically mentions a lack of fight on 2 ints thrown your way - I think that was alarming about his play. Duke (along with others) praised Zay and his helping get Duke prepared and ready to play Sunday. I don’t think there was anything other than play on the field. Zay seems to have bought in to what the team is teaching, but right now physically he just is not doing enough. Mentally he seemed to handle the demotion ok and supported his teammates and really supported Duke before and during the game.

His play specifically? One of the INTs that was thrown to him, IMHO. He did not come back for it, he did not jump for it, and he did not contest with the DB who jumped the route either to knock him off the ball (before he caught it) or pull him out of bounds before he got both feet down (after he caught it). That's kind of WR101 as I understand it. You promise the QB if he throws the ball to you, you'll either come down with it or you'll make sure that no one in the wrong jersey can come down with it. So McDermott said "sit a spell and we'll give a chance to the guy who's been making plays in practice, Son."
WhoTom
If I'm the coach, I take Zay into the office and tell him, "In the next few weeks, I'm gonna need to open up a roster spot. Right now, your name is on the list of potential cuts; you have a couple of weeks to convince me to remove it. Make your case on the field." I'm guessing Zay knows that already, but it really hits home when the boss says it.

I'm guessing Zay knows that already, but it really hits home when the boss says it. Zay saw his playing time decrease dramatically this week. The guy who played in his place, played very well. As long as that is the case, Zay is unlikely to see his playing time increase again, so what would be the point of what you propose? No point. IMHO. I'm sure Zay has been told by his position coach, Dabs, and maybe McDermott too where they want to see improvement or change. All you guys clamoring for Zay to be cut - if Smoke or Beas or Duke goes down, exactly who do you want out there playing? Foster is coming back from injury. He has good deep routes, but if he's slowed by injury, what will he have? Don't know yet. This TC and preseason, he was making boneheaded mistakes and needing to be told where to go. This is the NFL. Every player on the team is one hard hit or mishap away from needing a guy to step up behind him. If we make a move for a better WR, then Zay will become expendable whether he sells every molecule in his body out on the field or no. If we don't, we need Zay until we find someone better by trade, draft, or FA signing.
r00tabaga
I don't hate Zay ....like some do I just think he's our 7th best option right now. If he can get better and learn from his benching, then I'm all for 2nd chances. Just don't think he can learn to be more aggressive or better at, well, catching. vincec
He'll get his chance to get out of the doghouse. Injuries to the WRs are inevitable as the season moves on so he needs to keep a positive, constructive attitude and be ready when the opportunity arises.
