Bills finally give out #32 again, after 42 years

Recommended Posts

What a complete idiot. No way he’s making this team... last thing we need is Josh allen to be handing off the football to a #32 running back....

What a moron, what was this guy thinking requesting this number? Is he just a mega troll?

Not sure how I feel about this, but he was found not guilty by a jury of his peers..

I doubt we'll ever see anyone that ran like OJ again, period, but to give the number to Perry seems a bit off-putting to me.  Can't describe it, but it doesn't feel right.

Not sure who made the final call on this, but it is a bad decision.   Doing this just opens up old wounds.  The less his name is mentioned the better off we all are.

Issuing #32 after all these years is not going to make his name stay in the background.

All in all, I’m good with it. No one associated with the current FO has any stake in a murderer who played here 40 years ago. I don’t believe we’d ever retire the number, based on June 13, ‘96. I think it may be Pegula’s/McBeane saying “that part is over too!”

I saw OJ play many games, wowing Rich Stadium. But by ‘78, I was ready to move on. It helped that we Drafted Joe Cribbs with the pick we got from San Fran.

When did OJ get convicted of murder?

It’s an odd decision. I don’t really have strong feelings one way or another on whether his # should be issued. But I would be interested to hear the reasoning behind why they decided to do it now after all these years, and why they are giving it to a fringe guy.

There are approximately 99 numbers available to begin with.  Subtract out the few retired numbers and there are less than approximately 99.  If they have a bunch of running backs in camp well......

.

This isn't a big deal IMO.

You're kidding, right?

Did you miss the point where he was found ‘responsible’ for armed kidnapping?

Did you miss the part where he was found ‘responsible’ for double homicide?

Yes, you’re kidding.

Lol “reacquiring”.  Right.

Anyway,  a guy nearly decapitates 2 people and gets away with it....and your scratching your head over his holding a guy at gunpoint sentence?

Short of a big free agent who has worn the number his entire career, I would not want to be the guy who wears that number here.

Yeah but this is what you need if you ever want to put that number back into the mix.  Slap it on somebody nobody gives a damn about, let people see it on the field for a little while and get over the oddness of it, cut the guy then 32 is a more real option for the next guy.

I'm 41 years old, I've never seen anyone wear #32.  It will be odd the first time, then it will be fine.

Opening day there will not be a 32 on the roster.  With 90 on the roster with 12 and 78 retired and 34 and 83 unofficially who do you give out?  34 or 32?  32.  After cutdown Perry most likely isnt on the roster and if he is they change his number.

I don't like it.  I would have hoped it would have been a star or at least an early round pick.  Some scrub from the Dolphins gets it, sorry, but #32 was incredible in that uniform and I think it stinks.

Well, I think OJ was one of the top 5 running backs of all time.  It was privilege to to watch him and cheer for him.   He deserved every honor and accolade he received.

BUT - he doesn't deserve any more honors.   If his number was not formally retired, then it should be used like any other number.   His team is not going to honor him going forward, and his team should not show him the respect that goes with continuing to keep his number on the shelf.

I'm going to put my Jack Spikes and Donnie Stone jerseys on ebay now that it's ok, so if you're interested...

Alright, not my J Spikes...

Exactly what I'm hoping for & counting on now.

I think it's great #32 is being given out again, to help to wipe a little of the OJ BS away.

However...

Why to a run of the mill FA? Because he asked? That's not what I expected at all.

At least he won’t have any long term resentment, because he probably won’t be here long term. Don’t be the guy to follow “the guy”. Be the guy who follows that guy.

I'm a firm believer in giving people chances to display their brilliance... he will get a shot and I'm all for that.

Of course! Always. He should be penalized in no way at all. My point was, don’t be the guy to follow Jim Kelly, or Bill Belichick. You can’t live up to that. Be the NEXT guy, then you stand a fair chance.

I think giving it to a fringe guy is intentional.

"32" was unofficially retired.  So the Bills are un-retiring it in baby steps, starting with a fringe guy.

If Perry makes the team, it'll be really weird for old timers like me to see someone besides OJ wearing that number.

I think this is correct;  it’s a way to break the unofficial retirement with minimal notice.  It’s a way to distance them from OJ just a bit.  They do this a couple times with camp bodies/3d stringers and soon it’s no longer a story.

Had they given it to a high profile player or high draft pick it would have attracted too much attention.

But yeah, seeing someone else in that jersey is just weird.
