Bills will have “best of the best” weight room facility in the league following 18 mill renovation

"There's not many teams in this league that are doing the things we're going to do to help our players succeed on the field."

Calling it a "weight room" undersells all that the new facility will entail. Need an afternoon nap? There will be sleep pods available. Had a stressful day? There will be float tanks designed to melt that away. Rehabbing players will be able to use a section of turf instead of having to be on the sideline of the main practice field. Soaring, two-story windows will let in plenty of natural light, which Ciano said increases energy and improves a person's mood.

Office space, a yoga studio and recovery rooms that specialists such as chiropractors or massage therapists can use to treat players are also part of the plan. Currently, massage tables are hidden behind curtains in the northwest corner of the fieldhouse. First-world problem, maybe, but in such a highly competitive league, every detail matters.

"This player might need this to help them, this player might need this, so we're trying to provide a variety because they all have different needs," Beane said. "A lot of it's mental. What makes you feel the best? What helps you prepare the best? Whether it's the quarterbacks, the kickers, the linemen, whoever it is, this gives us more versatility."

A key part of the renovations, team officials say, is that will lead to a better flow of communication between the strength and conditioning staff and the team's performance science division, which records and analyzes performance, tracks nutrition and develops individualized plans for players to maximize production.

Current players have been peppering Ciano with questions about what the new weight room will include. The team hopes it will encourage players to stay in Western New York after the season to do their training.

"They know at the end of the day, that we're doing this for them, to help lengthen their careers, help keep them on the field, help decrease injuries," Ciano said. "I've been shocked here at camp how many of those guys have asked me questions. These guys are fired up about it."

It can also be a recruitment tool for new players next year when free agency begins.

"There's certain things we don't want to give up for a competitive advantage, but there's things that (in terms of) individualized player care, that we've already started," Beane said. "This is going to help us take another step in that area. How can we help … strengthen your skill set? This is what you do well, this is what you need to work on, and this is our plan, just for you."

There is an arch-support specialist in the Albany area well-known for his expertise.  He works (or did at the time) with some high profile clients, and former NBAer John Starks credited him with extending and improving his career. I was there with my kids, and we talked for a while about the impact he felt he could have on a playe like Aaron Schobel as he was having his issues with plantar fasciitis at the time.  He told me that he worked with many professional athletes and teams, but that the Bills didn't see value in that sort of thing.  He felt that there were some things that he could do to help AS but it was probably never going to happen.

As as we were leaving, there was a rather large box over off to the side with the last name "Diehl" on it, and I asked if it was for David Diehl of the NYG.  He just smiled and said he worked with lots of professional athletes.

Anyway, it's awesome to see and hear about the Pegs willingness to commit substantial time, money and effort into WNY.

Doubling the floor plan size and adding a second floor to what's already an impressive room when you see it in person

I've been in a lot of gyms, but from standing there and walking the route of the new layout I can tell you for sure that this facility will be on a whole other level

I hope this all pays off at some point on the field. I will always be so greatful they bought the team and are committed to keeping the team in WNY. In this case it shows they are going above and beyond. I know we as fans can be critical of some moves but their heart is in the right place for sure.

I would love a "sleep pod" at work!  Sounds great

Hopefully this will limit injuries.  If so, it's money well spent.

Doubt it

News like this makes me believe a refurbished New Era Field will be on the horizon.

Agreed. There is NO REASON to spend a crap-ton of money on a new stadium. A year away (UB stadium perhaps?) while they completely re-do Rich Stadium (yes, I'm really old) is the perfect solution for this market and franchise. Ticket prices will go up, but only by a third of what they would if they build a "palace" downtown, or even next door to the current confines.

Good on you, Kim and Terry. If you could also see about a certain team that plays on frozen water, we would appreciate it.........

i've heard they're consulting with planet fitness to ensure they build it properly.  it all starts with the free tootsie rolls.

LOL I am a member there simply because of the proximity to my office. I always find it funny that one day a week they have a big spread of bagels and cream cheese for the members.

Reading this and thinking back to Rex's first visit to the stadium I remember how impressed he was with the locker room and weight room. Russ took him on the tour and didn't know the difference between a mediocre weight room and a modern treatment facility (weights, water tanks, massage, etc).  I tend to think Rex let these guys condition themselves...treated them as peers/buddies rather than young men who need guidance and set goals in performance, diet, being a professional.

Confirms in my mind that Beane and McDermott (along with Terry and Kim) are doing things the right way. Classy team we have. Treat the players as professionals, give them everything they need to succeed and reach the post season. Ping pong tables and foosball are great in your apartment or house, but when you get to the stadium, it's time to work. They have players on the team who have adopted that mind set. Love it.

Speaking of the other team, doesn’t key bank center need a ton of upgrades? What’s the story there on a plan?

Interesting. Long term at the Ralph? Training camp there?

My first thought as well.  Bills will run out the lease at SJF then move camp to OBD.  They've certainly got the cash to buy out the remaining years at SJF but that won't play well with the Rochester fan base.

This.

Even if they build new, it should be on location.  They will need to ask the city for a lot of money for infrastructure, acquire a lot of land, etc which will virtually double the price tag.

If they refurbish.  Maybe playing one season at either the Carrier Dome or Toronto (BMO or Skydome).  It would stink kind of, but we wouldnt have the inferiority complex of losing our team on some sort of rent-to-own deal like the Toronto series

This is the kind of thing that separates good ownership from bad. The Pegulas did something similar with the Sabres locker room a few years back. The Bills facility has always been near the top of the league. These upgrades are another example of the Pegulas legitimately caring about their players. This $18M upgrade isn’t a revenue generator for them. It is a recruiting tool and an effort to keep players safer. This is just the kind of thing that good people do. Kudos to Kim and Terry for this!!

This was my first thought and I would be a big fan of the idea. The Pegula's have proven that they are all about doing things top notch.

There’s nothing wrong with it, people

just want more bells and whistles.
