Josh Allen Slowing?

Bad Things Man

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or does Josh look a lot slower running the ball.  Back in his rookie or second year some of his runs were clocked in the 20 mph range and he was making d-backs and LBs look silly running by them.  Seems like now when he finally does run he has trouble beating defensive line. Anyone else notice this?

So this week we've learned that Josh Allen is:

Slowing down

Not going through his progressions

Seems a bit depressed

Misses his ex

Still isn't studying film

Only wanted Dorsey because he's his buddy

Has an allergy to pistachio's (talk about bad luck)

Has lost his passion for the game

I may have missed a few.

Just how many ladders did this guy walk under in the offseason?

No way to really know for sure unless you have some clocked runs from this year too to compare. Personally I highly doubt his straight line speed and acceleration has decreased significantly in 2 or 3 years if we assume his playing weight as constant over that period of time. It’s more likely what you’re seeing with regard to him looking slower getting around the edge of the D line is Allen keeping his head up and looking downfield for a passing option for a longer period of time, instead of just accelerating and taking off.

I got a few more:

Can't read a defense pre-snap

Should be traded

I agree.
I also don’t think he has as much zip on his ball anymore. (I know, the announcers talked about him bruising hands on one crosser to Kincaide) He has decidedly been arching balls he use to throw on a rope , since the beginning of the season. Maybe it’s on purpose but I’m suspecting maybe not.

    This league takes a toll.

Josh is definitely not the main reason for the offensive woes.  That said, I do think he is a tad slower compared to past years.

They mentioned during the game how Kincaid dropped a ball because it was thrown so hard and how Gabe Davis gets bruised hands because of Josh’s throws

One of the fastest straight line runs I’ve ever from Allen was against Miami in last year’s playoff game which wasn’t too long ago… I haven’t seen any runs like that yet this season, but he’s also avoiding that part of his game more than ever this season unless he absolutely NEEDS to do it, which is why we started to see it in the 4th quarter against Cinci and, if anything, I thought he made some nifty moves…

I don't think he's slowing down per se, but, as others have pointed out, he's moving a bit slower for 2 reasons:

1)  He's trying to keep his eyes downfield to look for a potential throw

2)  He's gauging where the defenders are so that he can time a slide or run out of bounds, to avoid a big hit.  In the past, he would just go full steam ahead and try to run over whoever or whatever might be in the way.

I'm OK with both of these, even if it slows him down a bit.  That said, if he sees an opening, he should take it.  He's a fantastic runner and it's part of his game.  He just needs to avoid the big hits.  Yes, he can deliver them and yes, he's tough and can take a lot of them, but he needs to keep himself as healthy as he can.  If that means getting 18 yards instead of 20, so be it.  I'd, of course, make an exception where the game is on the line.  If it's 4th down in the 4th quarter of a close game, he has to do whatever it takes to get past the sticks.  It's all about situational awareness.

Ugh, I mentioned it right in my comment🙄

He still doesn’t seem , to me, to have the same effortless drive on the ball.

We could do the Buffalo Sabres thing and trade him (Eichel/O'Reilly), and then watch him win a Championship immediately.

My theory on Josh:

He is number 17

Stevie Nicks sang a song called 'Edge of 17'

Josh Allen is 'on the edge'

Stevie Nicks was in a band called Fleetwood Mac

Josh Allen used to be Fleet of foot but now is slower, as though he has wooden legs (hence FleetWOOD)

Josh Allen is overweight = too many Big Macs (FleetWOOD MAC)

The Albatross is a symbol of bad luck for seafarers

Fleetwood Mac had a hit titled Albatross

Josh Allen is experiencing bad luck

Conclusion: Stevie Nicks looks a lot like the woman who played Princess Leia

He is avoiding unnecessary contact.  I still think his shoulder is hurt MORE than he is letting on.  I also think the offense is designed to try to limit him on the ground, by giving him checkdowns or keeping the RB in to pass protect more.

Regardless, we know in the past he has been successful with his legs.  I'm sure we will see it come to life in games when needed

His thought process appears to be.  Not sure about his speed on the field

YES!! My son and I have talked about it a few times. When he runs this season he is noticeably slower than in past seasons. No doubt about it,. He lumbers when he runs now. He has gained a few lbs for sure in order to take hits. But you are 100% correct. He runs slower for sure.
