JMM
As always Beane nails it. This is how it's done. You stay ahead of the curve and lock up your young core before they can hit FA. Also with Dorseys new TE friendly system, barring injury Dawson could have huge year. This could look like a bargain deal in 2 years.
Ethan in Cleveland
26 minutes ago, Logic said: Totally reasonable take. Me? If forced to choose, I'd rather have Knox than Davis, simply because I think very good tight ends are harder to find than very good receivers. Obviously, I hope they re-sign Davis, too. But if they can't, I have faith that they can find a capable replacement at WR. There are simply too many good ones coming out every year. As it is, we've seen them hit on a 4th rounder (Davis) and it appears they've hit on a 5th rounder (Shakir), too. It's harder to find very good, very productive tight ends, AND it takes longer for rookie tight ends to get acclimated. A matchup-dictating tight end is also more important to overall offensive production and ceiling than a WR2, in my opinion. Anyway, hopefully it's a moot point and they find a way to pay Gabe, too, because I agree, he's a potentially special player. Key point to remember: The Bills control Davis for the next three years if they want to, even WITHOUT signing him to an extension. Good DTs are incredibly hard to find despite a bunch being drafted in the early rounds. A middle linebacker can be replaced with a rookie without missing a step or they can go with a reasonably priced veteran for a year or two. Bills already did it once when they drafted Edmunds and he started day 1. Makes no sense to commit big money to Edmunds.
Aurelius
Hopefully Oliver is next as he’s a huge priority. Edmunds obviously needs to have a great season. I can’t see spending money on Poyer. Just doesn’t make sense and the Bills have to get younger.

If he wanted top 5 money, i would have rather drafted a replacement and signed a guy like Gesicki to mid term. You can't have an elite player at every position. You need elite players at edge, corner, qb ly and wideout. Every place else, the beat you can afford is very good. Knox is very good, not elite. Of the three defensive guys, Ed Oliver is priority number 1 with a bullet. I love Poyer, but he's getting up there in years, and the McDermott has proven he can coach up defensive backs, meaning they should be able to find a capable replacement. I like Edmunds fine, but I have no desire to pay him the amount of money that I think he'll command. 5

It's going to look like a steal in 2-3 years. He's got fantastic tools and he's a big RZ threat with the potential to be a lot more. Love this signing. The problem with all these contracts that look like a bargain on the surface is eventually the chickens come home to roost. And whether or not the Bills do find real success this year and win a SB, a lot of these guys (and their agents) are going to demand more money as they see other (in some cases lessor) players get big paydays. Allie-Cox, Pitts, Fant and Hockenson will probably pass him in a year or two. 1

I think it’s interesting that he signed before Poyer, Edmunds, and Oliver, for whatever that’s worth When you factor in the current contract that he's on for this year, this puts Dawson Knox's overall contract at 5 yrs, $56ish million, which is just over $11 mil per year average. This slots him under Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry. This is an extension so I would be surprised if they didn't add some money to this season and the bonus is spread out over the 5 years starting with this season. 3 1

Who would have thought we’d have $50 Mil/year QB’s 3-4 years ago? I think Gesicki is making a bit north of $10 Mil, and as you point out he can’t block. If you are paying attention you realize the numbers only go up. Beane has been signing guys before he has to, and in return for them getting paid early, we get decent value.

blacklabel
Well this is pleasant news amongst the pro wrestling mess from this week, which I only mention because I'm going to AEW Dynamite tonight up at KeyBank. Anywho, the Beane-McDermott draft > develop > extend has yielded... -Tre White -Dion Dawkins -Matt Milano -Josh Allen -Taron Johnson -Siran Neal -Dawson Knox -Reggie Gilliam I'd imagine guys like Edmunds and Oliver are next in line for an extension. Maybe even late round guys like Jaquan Johnson who they seem pretty high on. And I think this season will determine whether they keep Singletary or Moss.

In 2 years, he will barely be a top 10 paid tight end. Was it a mistake the 49ers to pay Deebo Samuel when he only had 77 receptions? It seems that's the only stat that matters with you. 1
