They also all have the POTENTIAL to be good players in the NFL. Meanwhile, Zach Ertz would be a full time starter, and we already KNOW he’s a good player in the NFL. I agree the draft is a crapshoot, but players coming off a down year who have been dinged up too are not a sure thing either. Ertz also comes at a cap premium. I'm not seeing the Howard love...as a former pick #19 overall, has he lived up to that? and he's coming back from an Achilles, which is always worrisome. They gave Brate a deal that they can get out of for free whenever they want. The local writers there have pretty widely speculated that he'll be cut whenever they need money. Question simply boils down to whether or not they need that money this year. Howard has been very good when healthy but he's dealt with a lot of injuries. Either guy would instantly be the #1 TE here though and likely wouldn't cost as much financially or asset-wise as Ertz.

Logic
The veteran tight end market is just about dried up, and we know that the Bills badly want a veteran tight end. Darren Fells is still out there, I suppose, but the dropoff from Ertz to Fells is significant, and Fells is quite a bit older. I do not think it's a draftee they want to add to the stable. They want a vet. Gotta get the Ertz deal done.

HappyDays
This is Beane all but confirming that he wants to trade for Ertz but the asking price is too high right now. I bet the Eagles fold eventually. We have the upper hand. 1

mjt328
I guess all the cap estimates for Philadelphia didn't include the Carson Wentz trade. So now the Eagles can play the waiting game, and hope one of the teams up their offer. It's probably a smart play, because the TE cupboard is pretty bare on the free agent market. And outside of Kyle Pitts (who is a Top 10 pick), this draft class isn't very good either.

I could be wrong, but I believe it is the most successful two years of receiving by a Bills' TE in their 60 plus year history. I honestly could live with 59 receptions, for 518 yards and 5 tds from a single TE next year, let alone that as a position I believe they caught around 40 balls this year (albeit 8 TDs).
