Still Taking a Vacation this Summer?

I have no idea if they would have or not.  Glad I didn’t have to find out.  I have been hearing some sketchy stories, however, about airlines/resorts giving people a hard time offering vouchers instead of refunds.

I got airline vouchers instead of refunds for our PR trip.

Airbnb reached out to ME to tell me I was being refunded.  I didn't even have to ask.  And it was the company .. not the property owner.

Rental Car was refunded, no questions asked.

A bit off topic but you should never rent a car without free cancellation. Rates change and if you  don't mind checking in on rates daily or weekly you can save some money. I've saved over $750 by reserving early, making a new reservation and canceling the previous multiple times.

As for summer vacation, none for us. We had a Grand Canyon/Antelope Canyon/Monument Valley trip planned for April that got scrapped. For the record I would have had an all-time steal on that rental car as it got closer to the date.

Cancelled Aruba late April with the wife & 3.5 year old. Woulda been our first time there and first trip as just the three of us so bummed on that one. Usually do Disney in November for a week and run the food & wine festival 1/2 marathon. We registered for the race to the tune of about $200 each before all this hit and I know it’s opening back up mid July but may just have to sit this year out since we usually travel with the grandparents and it’s obv one of the most communal gathering spots on earth. If that doesn’t happen may try to do Hilton head or some other domestic / drivable beach trip with just the three of us in late summer / early fall.

We’re scheduled for Bills in Vegas but we’ll see. Planning on a ski trip with friends that own a ski condo in Montana in January 2021, hope that’s at least safe at this point. Obviously much bigger issues at hand and just thankful to be healthy & both still gainfully employed but after lockdown with a 3 year old (where I’m doing most of the childcare due to wife’s job), all I know is that I’ll be ready for something!

We were due to go to Majorca on 1st August. It was touch and go whether we'd be able to travel and/or have restrictions on what we can do when we get there and possible quarantine on our return to the UK.

To remove any of the worry we took the travel companies offer of being able to amend our holiday without a charge. So we re-booked for July next year but managed to get an extra day, private airport transfers and extra baggage allowance for the same price of the original holiday.

We felt doing this would take away any worry of anxieties we have about going away this summer. Our 9 year old took the news remarkably well ?

I will come and be in the crowd if they want some "extras"...tell your son i can bring my crew too, think he woould jump at that

UPDATE: As of today the wedding date has been moved to 2021. (Church wedding with parents only still goes off as planned in August.) The exact date shall remain unpublished for fear that you and the crew try to crash the party and send this young couple into bankruptcy due to the bar bill! :)

Proud of them for making the right decision despite the possible jump in cost if she can no longer qualify for the big employee discount. Some things are more important than money.

Had booked a 2 week cruise to th Baltic countries that was supposed to start on Easter. That burned up quicker than the Wuhan virus.

Im retired and live in Cape Cod. Every day is a Saturday and I’m in A vacation destination. Just had the boat put in the water in Hyannis. I plan to do as much fishing as I can.

Was supposed to go to Universal Studios June 20th with my family, my mom and in-laws, but are in the process of canceling. It's not so much the virus, as it is of paying premium money for a second rate experience due to the restrictions.

Had 5 days in Napa wine country July 23-28th for 50th BD. We cancelled. Got hotel refund (even though it was non-refundable and plane ticket credits to use for 2 years)

We did a company trip there last year and stayed at Meadowood.  It was awesome especially when we didn't have to pay for it.  When we lived up there we loved Sonoma a lot more than Napa but won't say no to a free trip to that resort.

Free is the way to go! We've been up there about 5 times. Sonoma is more laid back/family feel to it and Napa is way more corporate. Awesome wine all over the map up there. We'd like to reschedule for April 2021 but no rush to re-book.

I lived in the Bay Area of almost 10 year so we visited a ton.  Sonoma 30 times the three years alone.  I will tell you why we preferred Sonoma.  Yes the wine is better in Napa but it's a pain to get to and because it's smaller than Sonoma a lot more crowded.  And what Sonoma has a lot more of than Napa?  CHEESE!!!

Just scheduled my third one. Myrtle beach

Can you confirm, I've heard the beaches are off limits to out-of-staters in MB

We'd have been in Nashville right now

I have not heard that. But I will be looking into it. We aren’t going for another 2 weeks.

edit. Just read somethings that say out of state people should self quarantine for two weeks before going and follow social distancing when there. People I’m going with said they weren’t allowing New Yorkers and a few other states but that stopped about a month ago.

Went last fall for our 10 year and had an absolute blast. First time we had been out there, definitely not the last. Stayed at the Westin in Napa on points, was a great central spot. Did a small group tour one day of some Sonoma wineries, did a day exploring on our own and then did a private tour of 3 really small / family owned type places the last day. Ate tons of good good. I think we ate at hog island oyster company over in oxbow public market like 3 times!

Maybe 20 years ago we went out. Started in San Francisco, went down to Monterrey and Carmel, visited Pebble Beach. Then went to Napa and Sonoma, spent a couple nights in Calistoga.

I distinctly remember the last night in Calistoga. I ordered the Kansas City style ribs. We had spent weeks ordering food, then filling up on wine and great breads. We watched the tables around us, and we were not the only ones who were only good for one or two bites of our entrees. We learned a lesson on that trip.

We visited a bunch of wineries. Fell in love with Silver Oak and a couple others. My sister in Rhode Island kept our young kids. We sent her a case of VERY expensive wine as a thank you. Had to call her when we sobered up and say “Hey! That’s not cooking wine! Appreciate it. ”

We went there, actually San Fran, but do the Napa Valley wine train.  I enjoyed the heck out of that.  Great meal!

Not a vacation but flying Fri-Sun this weekend from RIC-BUF to visit my parents.
Will be extra safe when visiting them with PPE & proper distancing,
i booked my flights on an Embraer 145 (small jet) with a single row, alley, double row. I selected all my seats in the single row. I just do not trust airlines will not sell the seat next to me if I selected a double seat row.

Right now I see 8, 10, 12, 7 other people on those flights. The 145 holds 50 passengers.

He wouldn’t ask me to miss a game for a little thing like a wedding! :)

....but apparently I’ll have to record day two of the draft. Maybe he can reschedule again?

I want to go up to Maine later this summer.

We went to Bar Harbor years ago and it is absolutely beautiful! Stayed at a magnificent hotel and spent the most we had ever personally paid for a room to that point in our lives. We splurged! My wife had just finished all preparations for the upcoming Catholic Charities Ball.  As we are arriving we learn the Bishop has nixed the venue, the invitations/graphics, the NAME of the event, everything! She has to start over and ends up working almost the entire vacation. (The Bishop later realized he was wrong, and would bend over backwards to support us ever since.)

Oh well, I’ll enjoy this on my own and I’m going to make the most of it! I met some great guys in the bar that are part of a fundraiser. I’m asking about it and they explain they are a bunch of guys who each paid like $10k each to be part a 1,000+/- bike ride to raise a money for childhood cancer. Great cause! But by “bikes”, they meant motorcycles. About 7:00am the next morning they are all out in the parking lot showing off their “bikes” to each other, revving them to the point that the whole town had to hear them. Maybe the next county! They made an airport seem quiet! Three more days of this before they leave on their trip. No sleeping in on this vacation!  Great.....

So my wife blocks off some time one morning to go on a site seeing trolly. We go into the quaint little town, jump on the trolley and head up the mountains to get a beautiful view of..............fog. It was nice in town, but go up the mountain and you can’t even see the side of the road. The tour guide is saying “if you could see anything out the left side right now, it would be a great view of......”.

I hope you make it, and I hope your trip goes better than ours did!  It’s funny...............now.

  • 2 weeks later...

Still heading (by car) to Sarasota, FL for the parents only wedding of our son. That will be followed by a catered dinner for the bride’s family at a beach house some friends are letting us use. At the request of the wife and “kids”, I have located some frozen margarita/Daquiri machine rentals. Hey! When at the beach.......

Our Cook Islands (Rarotonga and Aitutaki) holiday has been cancelled and our borders are closed, so we're "stuck" here New Zealand for the foreseeable future.

I've already signed up to do the Milford and Routeburn tracks in Fjiordland and the local Abel Tasman Coastal Track this coming summer. I can't wait.  These hikes are usually too busy with international tourists for my liking, but should  be clear sailing this year.

Later in the year, I hope to take a couple weeks off and tour around the North Island with my motorcycle.  Really looking forward to that too.

My group of friends will not be getting together in our cottages in Canada for the first time in--(Let's see, how old am I? When did we first start going?...) well, conservatively 45+ years.  Yes, one of us missed the occasional year due to life's circumstances, but the even goes on!  We're looking at dates in September as a possible makeup date.

In the same boat.  I have been vacationing (renting) in Canada every summer, save 2 or 3, for my entire life.  This one looks in serious jeopardy.  I too am looking at possibly getting up in September. If they institute beer delivery In Ontario I would have no problem staying isolated at the cottage.  Typically I pretty much stay put once there anyway. Will surely miss it if the border stays closed

They can't patrol  it all!  When I used to survey places like Wilson Harbor  on Lake Ontario, boats coming  and going all  day.  Running  American  cigarettes  back to Canada ??.  Gotta  hit the quiet harbors. Speaking of that, wonder  what  it's  gonna  do for  our Snowbird action  at work that usually  hits  the Trent-Severn... Maybe they  stay  Stateside  and Buffalo becomes  a port of call?

I suppose  it's  pretty easy  to get in, if you  have  right tools.  Just don't  get caught.   I hear  those Ontario  prisons are  worse  than  their  Turkish  counterparts.  LoL...

After 10 years at previous company with only 2 weeks, finally got some bank of vacation (4 weeks) with current employer after 1 year.  Go figure.

Was planning on taking 2 extended road trips (one to the UP and the other to Mt Rushmore).  Got a couple things in play.  I'm taking half day Fridays to either kick back or get yard / house work done before the weekend.  Currently signed up for the Memorial t'ment in July (press center).  Reserved a couple of days in October in Chicago with GF.  Parents cancelled summer Germany trip - now driving up from FL to spend the month of August in Buffalo.  CBUS will be a layover point.  I'll take some time with them then.

This pretty much cancels our annual trip to the family cottage in Ridgeway ON. Will be the first time in 38 years I didn't spend at least one week up there.  We are now looking anywhere from Maine to virginia along the coast, but also looking at lake areas like the finger lakes and Winnepesakee in NH as a possible place for a week. We are open to any ideas.
