Is your Dad the reason you’re a Bills fan?

I remember that game. There was a good bit of hype going into that.  It was a blizzard back in 07. But the teams recrods were actually a little better than you recall and the score was different. Bills were 7-6 and Edwards had taken the job by that point and the browns were 8-5. Score was 8-0. Awful game to watch. Lol. The kicker is the browns finished a very solid 10-6 and STILL missed the playoffs that year. OUCH.

Ah yes we were making one last drive for a measly 8 points. Every first down was a nail biter "holy **** we got another one". It was fascinating how bad we were yet were scrapping to the 30 Juaron gives the okay on 4th and 8 screen. Game over. Family laughs at me for thinking the Bills were ever making the playoffs. Even with the loss that drive had me glued to the TV. Thought football was awesome.

That was a good Browns team too. Derek Anderson was top 10 statistically that year, Jamal Lewis, Kellen Winslow II was a good TE, braylon Edwards, Joe jurevicious. Wonder what was going through Browns' fans heads could imagine. They ran out the exact same offense the year after and EVERYBODY sucked. I thought they were going to rule the AFC.

Absolutely.

I grew up in Rochester. My two best friends were Dolphins fans. Actually, I didn't know many Bills fans in Rochester back in the 70's (I was born in '60).

My father was a Bills fan and an Orioles fan (Rochester Red Wings were the AAA farm team of the Orioles while I was growing up). My mother was also a rabid Bills fan. My parents had an antenna on our roof where we could at least sometimes get a grainy picture of the Bills games from either Buffalo (if not blacked out) or Syracuse when they were on. Or, we'd have the radio on to listen to the games. in the '90s, when games were blacked out, my parents would go to the Garage Door (a bar / restaurant that used to be a few miles from their house) to watch the games.

My father turns 94 this August and I'm very fortunate to still have him. My mother passed away 2 years ago. Her last training camp that she went to was either 3 or 4 years ago. My father still makes it to camp most summers, he wouldn't go on his own, but either me or one of my brothers or nephews will be in town at some point during camp and will want to go and he's always up to go with us.

I started taking each of my kids to a Bills Backers bar in Orange County CA when each turned 8 weeks old. I kept taking them every week for several years. They're now about to turn 20 and 16. Unfortunately, even though I tried my hardest, neither is really into football. I think if asked, they both would say the Bills are their favorite team, but in actuality, they don't really care.

Happy Fathers Day.

Funny how some from our generation become self made bills fans and others don't even with all that opportunity.

Definitely.  My dad grew up upstate and all his family were Giants fans, as was he until 1960.  When the AFL came along he was all in, especially about the Bills.  Some of my parents’ first dates were Bills games.  My first game was at the Rockpile during its last year.  (A loss to the Johnny U led Colts, 17-0–we got blanked by the same score the next game I went to, too.  It took my 3rd game vs the Butkus Bears to see point and a W.)

He passed away 2 years ago and is a big reason why I’ll be crying tears of joy for both of us when they eventually win it all.....

My dad, nope, he didn't like sports at all.  I guess just living near Buffalo from age 1 to 8 made me a fan.  Ironically I was born in Florida, but my older brother is the Dolphins fan.  I had a lot of bad years in a row when the Bills played his team.  I'm now 55 and living in Northern CA, and still a huge fan.  I do see some Buffalo Bills stickers on vehicles now and then.

Someone had to be a fan of a New York State team!

Yes. I was at the greatest comeback in history we stayed the whole. I think because my dad was too drunk to drive back to Rochester. But that was the bug turning point that I started watching every game.

My kids are allowed to pick their team my son likes the broncos. I can't but the buffalo emotional rollercoaster on him.

Yes.  In the early '60s Dad and Co-worker shared season tickets so I attended many games at The

Rockpile.  My parents were big sports fans and my love of sports was inherited from them.

Games at the War Memorial were an adventure in the early '60s.

Yep.  I was a Raiders fan when I was little.  Read "Ken Stabler and the Oakland Raiders" hundreds of times.  My Dad then took me to a Raiders - Bills game in Orchard Park.  I remember the tailgating was awesome and the game atmosphere was unbelievable.  By the end of the game, I was a Bills fan, and I never looked back.

It was the opposite for me.  Grew up in WNY so obviously the Bills were the big thing in town but my Dad wasn't a diehard fan, more casual, too caught up with work back then to really care etc.  I got my fandom from my Uncle and Grandpa.  Over time my Dad became much more into the Bills because of my interest in them and nowadays he is a much bigger fan than when I was growing up.

Nope... not my dad.  My parents came from Germany and couldn't care less about American Football.  Neither could either of my older brothers.

I was always the only one in the family to watch the games.

Yes.  My Dad also taught me the difference between "you're" and "your"........

He managed to make that mistake twice in the title. I wonder if it was purposeful.

My Dad never really loved sports...he'd watch Syracuse basketball more than anything else and some Syracuse football, but not much else. But when he'd see me watching the games as a teenager he would do his best to talk to me about them and sometimes he'd spend a little time watching it with me. We did watch Syracuse games together more often and we went to one SU basketball game, but not much else. We've always bonded more over movies and food than anything else.

I came to love the Bills and Sabres despite my step-brothers and step-sister being a NY Rangers fan, Giants and Cowboys fans. There was just always something about the mystique of WNY and the way I identified with the team and it's fans more than I did the Giants. Once I latched on, that was it....I was hooked for life even when I truly wished I wasn't.

In the fall of 1970 our school had a foreign exchange student from West Germany.

Yes, he played soccer but also wanted to kick for the American football team.

His parents knew nothing of American football, so he told them to watch the movie M*A*S*H.

He told them the end of the movie featured American football.

After watching that, their response was  Nein !!! Nein !!!

yes. my father and i are canadian, he went to school in buffalo and rochester and became a casual fan. when kelly started playing he just had to show me this brilliant quarterback who calls his own plays and runs an offense like no other. jumped on the bandwagon right when they started getting good...and never left.

My dad was from Greece and tried to force feed me soccer...I hated it and had to sort of blaze my own trail when it came to "American" sports.  I guess when I was 8 years old I was a bit of a front runner. Huge Bills, Rangers, Mariners, Sonics fan. I stayed loyal all of these years with both the Bills and Mariners being bad for so long.  I know this is Sabre country....and though I am a NY Rangers fan, my favorite player growing up was Alexander Mogilny. I also loved the Sonics and quit the NBA when they moved to OKC.

Go Bills!

My dad isn't the reason I'm a Bills fan.

He is, however, the reason I kept watching the comeback game vs. Houston.  He gave me the old, "hey ... you never know ..."

My dad was many things, but football fan was not one of them.

On the other hand, my son is a Bills fan, and I can probably take a little credit for that at least.

Nope, my dad's from Indy and as a result a Colts fan. Yet I was born in Buffalo but always liked the west coast (as grew up an Oakland A's/Rickey Henderson fan) so my early team of choice was the Raiders because of Marcus Allen. Yet once the Bills trounced the Raiders in the AFC Championship I became a Buffalo homer and haven't stopped since.

Ditto.

Little known fact: Helping to make a kid a Bills' fan is a form of child abuse. Not according to federal law ... Yet.

Actually years ago the joke was just the opposite...something like...

A child goes to the police station claiming abuse

The officer says, can I take you to your parents.

The child says, no they beat me.

The officer says, can I take you to you grandparents

The child says, not they beat me as well.

The officer says, well where can I take you?

The child says, take me to the Buffalo Bills, I hear they don't beat anyone...

Yes. Dad and Mom grew up in Buf (I was just born there) and Dad took me to my 1st game when I was 8 in 1979 against the Bears when Walter Payton flipped over our entire D-Line and had the only score of the game. :)

Nope.  I love and admire my father but for some strange reason he always loved the Raiders and that loathsome toad Al Davis.  We moved away from Watkins Glen when I was 13, and being a Bills fan helped me stay loyal to my childhood.

Although...  I was a pretty good kid, what did I do to deserve this?!  ;)
